Cantatas for secular occasions repeatedly stimulated Telemann's sparkling wit and humor. In The Schoolmaster, for example, he depicted a puffed-up cantor lecturing his class; in the Cantata to a Canary Bird, he evoked the painful loss of a little feathered friend; and in the cantata The Women's Order TWV 20:49 he portrayed a young bride who looks forward to her future married life with joyful anticipation. The text, at times drastic and coarse, is set to carefree, joyous music and is guaranteed to provoke chuckles. While some of the arias are restrained and operatic, others are joyful and exuberant. Between them, our interest is secured by the short recitatives and, above all, by the lullaby. Telemann masterfully yet mischievously underlines and elucidates certain textual passages with the music. There are a wealth of surprising little effects which are always a delight. They show that this work was no doubt conceived as a serenade for a wedding ceremony, whereby one can assume that the performers acted out their parts during the performance.

New edition, with preface by Gerard McBurney. The work was composed in 1933-38 for one of the greatest cellists of the 20th century, Gregor Piatigorsky. McBurney explains that, somehow this concerto had come to seem jinxed to the composer. And when, in 1947, he heard it in Moscow once again, this time played by the young Mstislav Rostropovich, he decided to recast it (albeit using much of the same material) as an entirely new piece, the Sinfonia Concertante, op 125. The earlier version never entirely disappeared, however, with a scattering of cellists always preferring it to the later one. And in recent years, it has found new favor and new champions, its spectacularly difficult cello writing and virtuosic orchestral effects offering a brilliance, pungency and fascination all of their own..

Uuno Klami (1900-1961) was born in Virolahti and studied in Helsinki, Paris and Vienna. While living in the capital city Helsinki, he always spent his summers in the original homestead in Virolahti. Klami is most known for his colourful orchestral works, but works for piano frame the different times of the composer's life nicely. The piano works are so joyous that transcribing from for organ is firmly based. Surumarssi (Trauermarsch) Op. 8 was composed when Klami was 16 years old, most likely in memory of his late mother. Pastoral A-flat major was composed in December 1919; I find it contains the feeling of Christmas. Barcarole Op. 5 is a French-influenced work. I often find myself thinking of a boat bobbing on waves, while I play this work. I believe these organ transcriptions bring many joyful moments in concerts as well as in other congregational use. And not only that: they can be used as pedagogic material as well.

I first had the idea to arrange Beautiful Dreamer for SATB choirs a cappella, after hearing Kristen Chenoweth in concert. She ended her concert, in a 1,600 seat hall, with Beautiful Dreamer, an a cappella solo, with no microphone. Given the beautiful melody, text and Ms. Chenoweth's voice, one could have heard a pin drop in the audience. Her performance concluded to thunderous applause and a standing ovation. The power of music. Throughout this arrangement, the harmonies support the beautiful melody and text (rather than get in its' way). Opportunities abound for vocal parts to be showcased as well as an optional solo/duet at the beginning. Sing freely, with pure vowels, crisp diction and sensitivity, allowing the text to prevail by giving special attention to stressed and unstressed syllables and words. I hope you enjoy singing this arrangement in rehearsal and performance to the delight of your audience. Maximal Funeral by Bernhard Gander is a 13-minute work for two natural trumpets, percussion (two players) and string orchestra. The piece is a long funeral march and was inspired by the fact that years before his death Emperor Maximilian always took a coffin with him on his travels to be prepared for it.
Maximal Funeral was made possible by the Hilde Zach Scholarship 2017 by the City of Innsbruck. The premiere performance by the Tiroler Kammerorchester InnStrumenti conducted by Gerhard Sammer took place on 9 March 2019 at the Canisianum, Innsbruck (Austria).
