These Four Dances from CLORINDA AGONISTES (Clorinda the warrior) are taken from a recently completed dramatic work; a hybrid opera & dance theatre work currently of the same title. The name Clorinda comes from Monteverdi’s opera Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda , whose libretto is from the epic poem by Tasso titled, Gerusalemme Liberata (Jerusalem Liberated). The dramatic work, which was commissioned by the London based Shobana Jeyasingh Dance company, the Sadler’s Wells Theatre and the Royal Philharmonic Society, was composed as a companion piece to Monteverdi’s Il Combattimento.

For amateur SATB chorus with divisions, Opposites by Rhian Samuel pairs a well-known poem by Shakespeare with a less familiar one by his contemporary, the lute-song composer Thomas Campion.

In Shakespeare's much anthologised 'Crabbed Age and Youth' the decay of the former and vigour of the latter inspire contrasts of texture, register and dynamics to make a simple yet effective form culminating in the defiant tutti of 'Age, I do defy thee!'

A meditation on the fruitless pursuit of passion, Campion's 'Follow thy fair sun, unhappy shadow' alternates a lilting refrain with dueting soprano and alto, and tenor and bass.

Lasting around ten minutes, the two items would make an attractive and complementary element in any programme that explored the richness of English verse in choral song, whether in classical, romantic or contemporary repertoire.

EUGENE ONEGIN, based on a verse-novel by Alexander Pushkin, is Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky's (1840-1893) best-known opera. The story depicts the life of the titular Onegin, a Russian dandy who does not understand himself, his emotions, or the value of life, leading him to reject an impassioned declaration of love by a woman he looks down upon and instead pursue the fiancée of his friend, who he kills in a duel as a result of this pursuit. The provincial WALTZ, brought here to a higher level of sophistication by Tchaikovsky, is performed at the ball honoring Tatyana's name day at the beginning of Act II. This orchestral work has found a popular home on the concert stage and outside the full opera. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set).
