The plan for the three orchestral Nocturnes took a long time to mature: Debussy first alluded to them as 'Three evening scenes' in a letter dated September 1892. Two years later the work was already referred to as a concerto, which would have been written for the renowned violinist, Ysaye. In the end, however, it was the original idea which meterialised. According to notes on the composer's manusript the detailed elaboration of the Nocturnes took two years: 'Composé de décembre 1897 á décembre 1899'. Only the first two movements were played at the first performance in Paris on 9th December 1900. The complete work was performed on 27th October 1901. Although the full scoreappeared in print as early as 1900, Debussy made a number of substantial changes in the orchestration during the years that followed, only the much later, in 1930 published version may be regarded as the final one which forms the basis of the present edition.

A bird is considered to have fledged at the time when its wing muscles and feathers are sufficiently developed for flight. When young birds have reached this stage, but are still dependent on their parents for care and feeding, they are referred to as fledglings. This piece musically follows a fledgling as it begins the long process of learning to fly. It starts out tentatively, gains ability, struggles, and then eventually soars. In all instances where a longer note is tied to an eighth note, players should release, stopping the sound, on the eighth note. For example, a dotted half note tied to an eighth note should have a definite stop at the beginning of beat 4.Measures 20–26: The sudden changes in dynamics should be exaggerated to produce a somewhat pronounced awkward effect.Measures 52–57: The flute, oboe, and clarinet parts should produce a constant flowing sound in the slurred eighth notes, breathing on the eighth-note rests.Measures 66–67: Make sure the staccatos are very short and pronounced, but do not cover the melody in the low brass and reeds.Measures 72–86: Emphasize the accents on the upbeats in the percussion instruments.Measure 83: Emphasize the crescendo to forte and then immediately drop to mezzo-forte.

The band can't swing if they aren't swinging together, and Great Minds Swing Alike is just the chart to prove it! The melody gets passed through the band, while the rhythm section digs in with a steady swing groove. The changes are simple allowing for opening up the solo section and the ranges are playable, but with a big time shout chorus the audience would never know it! It's a great opener to get the crowd dancing or a closer to leave them wanting more!

“Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's (1756-1791) Flute Concerto in D is an adaptation of the original Oboe Concerto in C, which the composer reworked in 1778. The Concerto remains widely studied and performed on both instruments, making it one of the more important Concerti in the woodwind repertoire. Concerto in D is in three movements; 1. Allegro aperto, 2. Adagio non troppo, and 3. Rondo: Allegretto. The first and last movements are in the tonic key, whilst the second movement is in the subdominant key of G major. A Dutch flautist of the time, Ferdinand de Jean, commissioned Mozart for four Flute quartets and three Flute concerti. However, the composer, who famously disliked the Flute, only completed three quartets and one concerto. Instead of composing a second concerto, Mozart rearranged his Oboe Concerto, with substantial changes for it to fit with the Flute. De Jean did not approve, yet the Concerto in D for Flute remains as popular to this day as the Concerto in C for Oboe.â€.

Gabriel Pierne (1863-1937) was a French composer, conductor and organist. Despite being predominantly remembered as a conductor, his Canzonetta remains a recognised piece in the Clarinet repertoire. Pierne studied at the Paris Conservatoire before taking up the position of chief conductor for the concert series, Concerts Colonne in 1910. He remained in the post until 1933, and during this time, he notably conducted the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's The Firebird. Pierne composed for a variety of instruments, Canzonetta for Clarinet with Piano accompaniment being one of four solo works by the composer. This Pierne piece for Clarinet contains many characteristics typical of the French style, such as lyrical melodies, a significant number of performance directions, flourishes of semiquavers, chromaticism and many changes in dynamics. Canzonetta is a varied piece, essential to the repertoire of aspiring clarinetists..

Reiner Schuhenn’s mass setting for mixed choir only requires one male-voice part. The setting includes the standard parts of the mass: Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei (the Credo has been omitted for liturgical reasons, since this part is intended for the congregation). The power of rhythm, fast time signature changes, and ostinati characterize the Gloria and Sanctus movements, whereas the Kyrie and the Agnus Dei are more melodically orientated. Either an organ or a piano can be used as the accompanying keyboard instruments, while the Cologne Mass can be performed without an accompaniment at all.

This work is an energetic introduction to Sturm und Drang style written by the father of modern astronomy. Dotted rhythms, hooked bowings, and detailed attention to dynamic changes allow for many opportunities to work on fundamentals. Chromatic fingerings are a must: violin 1 uses third position, and all other parts use extensions.

Arnold Schonberg is the central figure in the musical world of this century. His musical significance was already apparent during his life-time, but his posthumous influence has increased immensely. His work paved the way for ground-breaking changes in musical perception. This complete edition aspires to be equally indispensable for research as well as for performance. The edition is published in two series: series A in folio format contains all completed works, all piano scores prepared by the composer himself and all unfinished works suitable for performance; also fragments (large scores) which are better suited to be printed in such a format. Series B, in quarto format, contains early versions, sketches, ideas and fragments as well as genesis and a Critical Commentary.
