Centenary 2019 is a three-movement suite based on a local folksong and was commissioned by Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem, from the Dutch province of Friesland, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2019. ‘AwakeningVillage’, the first movement, musically describes the waking up and coming to life of the village. ‘Bintje Monument’ was inspired by a famous sculpture that was placed to honour headmaster Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929) whodeveloped the well-known potato variety called ‘bintje’. The finale, ‘Journey into the Unknown’ refers to the band’s memorable 2011 concert trip to the United States of America, in which the composer combines elements of thefolksong and fragments from ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’. The piece consists of a wide range of playful and melodic sequences as well as some galvanizing rhythmical passages.

Het driedelige werk Centenary 2019 werd gecomponeerd in opdracht van Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem uit het Friese Sumar ter gelegenheid van het honderdjarig jubileum van de vereniging in 2019. Het is gebaseerd op een plaatselijkvolksliedje. In het eerste deel, ‘Awakening Village’, wordt verklankt hoe het dorp ontwaakt en tot leven komt. Deel twee, ‘Bintje Monument’, is ge nspireerd op een sculptuur ter nagedachtenis van hoofdonderwijzer Kornelis Lieuwesde Vries (1854-1929), die het bekende aardappelras bintje ontwikkelde. De finale, ‘Journey into the Unknown’ verwijst naar een concertreis die de muziekvereniging in 2011 naar de VS maakte. De componist laat elementen uit hetleidmotief en flarden van ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ in het slotdeel van dit werk samenkomen. Het werk als geheel bestaat uit diverse speelse en melodische sequensen, alsook opzwepende ritmische passages.

Centenary 2019 est une commande de la Fanfare De Lofstem, un ensemble du village de Sumar, dans la province néerlandaise de la Frise, pour marquer son centenaire, en 2019. Cette suite en trois mouvements est fondée sur unechanson traditionnelle locale. Le premier mouvement, « Awakening Village » (Le village s’éveille), dépeint l’éveil et la reprise des activités du village. « Bintje Monument » (Le monument la Bintje) s’inspire de la célèbresculpture qui rend hommage Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929), un directeur d’école qui a créé une variété de pomme de terre bien connue, la Bintje. Le dernier mouvement, « Journey into the Unknown » (Voyage vers l’inconnu),évoque une inoubliable série de concerts aux États-Unis. The Missa pastoralis bohemica (Bohemian Shepherds' Mass), composed in 1796 by Mozart's contemporary Jakub Jan Ryba, is the most significant of the so-called Czech Christmas Masses. These are masses in a folkloristic style, in which the individual movements consist of a series of vocal-instrumental scenes in the Czech language; their topic is the birth of Christ and they are performed during the Christmas service. The story is about four Czech shepherds to whom the birth of Christ is announced, whereupon they visit the child in the manger. Ryba's mass became so famous that it is regarded - even today - as a symbol of Czech Christmas. The present critical edition represents the first edition of the work in its original form and the original keys; it contains a singable alternate text in German. El barreño (The basin) is a folkloric dance which is found in various countries in Central America such as El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. It is said to have originated in the 18th century in Cuscatlán, one of the provinces of El Salvador. The accurate name of the dance is not clear, and 'barreño' refers to 'barrio' (neighborhood) where this dance became very popular. This dance, reminiscent of the medieval traditions, develops around elements of courtship and fl irtation which are refl ected in the choreography. The choral version published in this edition stresses the rhythmic fi gures and syncopations typical of this dance.

Variazioni in Blue besteht aus einer Reihe von Variationen, die auf melodischen Blueselementen wie die blue notes“ beruhen. Einer ornamentalen Variation im klassischen Stil schließt sich eine Blues-Variation an. Dann folgt eine temporeiche, osteuropäische Variation. Das Werk ist dadurch sehr vielschichtig und abwechslungsreich und passt hervorragend in den konzertanten Teil eines Konzertes. Auch als Wertungsspielstück ist es sehr gut geeignet.

Variazioni in Blue est basé sur une série de variations dans laquelle des éléments du blues (comme les fameuses blue notes) servent de fil conducteur. Après une introduction majestueuse qui révèle partiellement le thème central, on entend une première variation ornementale dans un style classique. Elle est suivie par une deuxième variation dans le style du blues et par une troisième, plus rapide, dont le caractère provient des musiques traditionnelles d’Europe de l’Est. L’Andante espressivo contient de subtils changements harmoniques. Ce mouvement évolue en une reprise de la variation folklorique précédente dont l’intensité est augmentée par le passage enMajeur qui conduit vers le finale.
