Past and present enter into dialogue. The text quotation from Heine in the subtitle corresponds to the musical Schubert quotation at the end. The variative figures are reminiscent of a passacaglia. A diabolical dance in the middle section is framed by two parts based on the same material and illustrating nocturnal calm. The work is available as a recording with Felix Brucklacher, clarinet, and Hiroko Arimoto, piano, on the portrait CD released in 2022 on the Genuin Classics label (GEN 22760) on the occasion of the composer's 75th birthday.

Kalevi Aho's (b. 1949) Clarinet concerto (2005) has five movements played without pause. The beginning Tempestoso is dramatic and powerful, but there is also a beautiful, slow middle section. The second movement consists of a virtuosic solo cadenza, which is dominated by mysterious tremolos on the clarinet.The cadenza leads to Vivace, con brio, which is the central climax of the concerto and the most virtuosic movement both for the orchestra and the soloist. Then follows the slow, melancholic and lyrical fourth movement Adagio molto. The Epilogue is slow, too; the atmosphere of the last movement is unreal, mysterious. The solo part at the end consists largely of broken, multiphonic clarinet sounds before the concerto fades out into a silence. Gunter Habicht composed music for folk instruments and contributions to educational literature as well as works for wind orchestra, chamber and orchestral music, including the Sinfonietta, published in 1964 by VEB Breitkopf & Hartel Musikverlag Leipzig, and the award-winning Quartettino 1969 for wind instruments, created for a composition contest organized by the Association of Composers and Musicologists on the occasion of the GDR's 20th anniversary. With an easy piano accompaniment, the sonatina for clarinet and piano Temperaments, written in the same year, is particularly aimed at more advanced music students and amateur musicians. Each of the three movements represents one temperament (1. sanguine type, 2. melancholic type, 3. choleric type) that needs to be worked out during the rehearsals. From 1935 to 1939, Gunter Habicht (1916-2010) studied with Herbert Viecenz and Boris Blacher (music theory and composition) and with Walther Meyer-Giesow and Ernst Hintze (conducting) at the Dresden Conservatory. In 1951, Gunter Habicht taught at an elementary school in Leipzig, and in 1952, he was appointed specialist lecturer for music at the Zentralhaus fur Volkskunst. From 1955 to 1981, he was a teacher of music theory and clarinet at the Leipzig City Music School.

“Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) studied under Gabriel Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire. His compositions proved to be extremely versatile, from Operas and Ballets to solo works. Grovlez's Sarabande and Allegro is a sublime addition to the Clarinet repertoire. Much of the composer's works show neo-classical features, which is also the case in Sarabande and Allegro. Where the texture is predominantly melody dominated homophony, perfect cadences are frequently heard and modulations to related keys occur. Grovlez's C minor Sarabande is in a steady, triple meter, superbly contrasted by the fast Allegro, composed in the relative major. All these features make for an enjoyable and delightful performance!&rdquo.

Verdiana is a musical tribute to Giuseppe Verdi. It takes some of his most famous melodies and reimagines them in styles of Samba, Bossa Nova and Tango to produce a virtuosic showpiece for clarinet and orchestra. The work is structured in three movements. The titles of the movements do not only indicate from which operas the main melodies were taken, they also function as a hint to the styles in which the movements are written. The first movement, titled Il Sambatore, is a Samba based primarily on the melodic material from Verdi's Il Trovatore. The second one, Un Bossa in Maschera, is a slow Bossa Nova and consists of an aria from Un Ballo in Maschera. The third and the most virtuosic movement is called Don Tangoletto and derives most of its material from Don Carlos and Rigoletto. The piece exists in 4 versions: Solo clarinet with either full orchestra, string orchestra, string quartet or piano.
