The Last Rose of Summer is a popular Irish folksong. The original text was written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) and the melody is a traditional air titled The Groves of Blarney. The German composer Friedrich von Flotow (1812-1883) cleverly used this song in his opera Martha, a light-hearted, successful work that is still regularly performed. The melancholy character of The Last Rose of Summer still appeals to many people in the present day and this arrangement by Wil van der Beek certainly does justice to the beauty of the melody. The lyrical melody evolves and transforms throughout the piece until it reaches an unexpected but satisfying conclusion. The Hida High School is in a highland city called Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. Takayama City has some of the highest mountains in Japan, atmospheric rows of houses and streets, and a beautiful landscape. The magnificent views from these mountains can be described as a paradise above the clouds. When the composer visited there in the summer of 2001, the lovely flowers spreading through the valley and the refreshing air welcomed him. The flowers looked as if they were fashionably dressed and fully enjoying conversation and a short summer at a reunion party. The composer was inspired by this scenery to compose this piece. The musical party opens with happy greetings of a reunion andjoyful themes follow one after another. A light xylophone solo, a waltz and an adagio featuring alternate solos by alto saxophone, euphonium and trumpet lead to a brilliant finale featuring brass and percussion played in irregular time. A beautiful musical picture that your band will enjoy performing for many years.

In Memoriam: For the Fallen was commissioned by Bolsover District Council for the Bolsover Brass Summer School 2014. It is a setting for narrator and band of Laurence Binyon’s (1869-1943) poem, For the Fallen, which was first published in The Times in September 1914. Binyon was dismayed at the outbreak of war and especially concerned by the large number ofcasualties suffered by the British Expeditionary Force in the early months of the battle on the Western Front. Too old to enlist, he volunteered as a hospital orderly in France. The poem is known world-wide as the famous fourth stanza (They shallgrow not old…) has become a regular part of Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day services. In Memoriam: For the Fallen is a musical accompaniment to the poem, shadowing the mood of each stanza. Lepoème est connu mondialement, sa quatrième strophe, They shall not grow old...

As summer ends, the chill of the autumn air awakens feelings within us. The shadows are longer in late afternoon and darkness comes early. The trees are losing their leaves and their gnarled trunks and branches take on sinister profiles against the looming twilight. We shudder at the cold wind. Our pulse quickens and we suddenly want to return to the safety and warmth of home. Night falls and we are once again at peace. We say a final farewell to the carefree days of summer and accept the relentless march of the seasons. Winter will soon be here. Shadows of the Equinox is a dramatic and lyrical piece inspired by a late Midwest autumn. It was commissioned by the 2010 Festival of Bands, Vincennes, Indiana, including the bands from Barr-Reeve, Loogootee, Mitchell, North Daviess, North Knox, and South Knox High Schools. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.
