Philip Sparke’s third symphony, A Colour Symphony, was commissioned by “sinfonischen blasorchester wehdel†conducted by Thomas Ratzek. In the five movements (white, yellow, blue, red and green) the composer creates links betweenthe instrumentation and harmonic elements and the actual colour of the spectrum the movement stands for. In order to create the greatest richness possible, Philip Sparke used a very large instrumentation including low woodwinds, harp, piano andcelli. The well-known 16th Century canon by Thomas Tallis is as effective as it is simple. This arrangement includes four verses of the melody: the first in the form of canon; the second for brass; the third for woodwind and the fourth for the entire orchestra. A Man’s Destiny has the Frisian line ‘Yn Ieren en Sinen’ (‘with much conviction’) as its subtitle. The work was commissioned by CMV Harmonie Sneek (based in Friesland, The Netherlands) to acknowledge their 95th anniversary. The composer based this work on the life of a former member of the band, who played flugelhorn in the ensemble until the age of 86. Their favourite piece of music, ‘Canon’ by Thomas Tallis, provided a great deal of musical inspiration for this characteristic and versatile work.A Man’s Destiny heeft als ondertitel de Friese regel ‘Yn Ieren en Sinen’ (vanuit volle overtuiging) meegekregen. Het werk is geschreven in opdracht van de CMV Harmonie Sneek ter gelegenheid van haar 95-jarig jubileum. Thomas Jefferson's Fiddle Tunes is inspired by Thomas and Martha Jefferson's musical evenings after dinner at Monticello. Composer James Meredith has taken three reels from the colonial period in American history and put them together into a potpourri setting that students will enjoy playing.Good music played well inspires the imagination. In the evenings after dinner at Monticello Thomas and Martha Jefferson enjoyed nothing better than to play music. Each was an accomplished musician. Jefferson would play the violin, and Martha would often accompany him at the piano. He especially enjoyed the music of Corelli. Thomas Jefferson’s Fiddle Tunes is an effort to depict what a musical evening might have been at the farm with guests joining in, clapping, stomping, or dancing to the lively tunes. Three reels of the Colonial period are featured in this medley. Jefferson and Liberty, Smash the Windows, and The White Cockade. Each jig is introduced by a solo violin then the whole section joins in.
