At less than 20 years of age, the youngest son of the Leipzig cantor of St. Thomas, Johann Sebastian Bach, withdrew from the Lutheran musical tradition of his family: Johann Christian Bach went to Italy, converted to Catholicism there and composed mainly Latin church music between 1757 and 1760. His great successes with operas for Turin, Milan and Naples from 1761 onwards led him all the way to London. Bach's church music comprises a number of vespers compositions, some of them large-scale, including this Magnificat a 4 (1760) for soloists, choir and orchestra. The very diversified work gets its additional attraction from distinctively led oboes and horns.

Built from primitive sounding rhythms and modal harmonies, this intriguing work opens with an ominous introduction that leads into the first statement of the main theme. Educational opportunities abound in this energetic piece, including some easy two-part counterpoint between the 1st violins and 2nd violins/viola. Primitivo, which is correlated to Orchestra Expressions Book 1, or to most first year method books, is certain to capture the imaginations of students and audiences alike! (2:10).

Carrickfergus is a city in Northern Ireland, and this Irish folk song of the same name has been sung for more than 300 years. It is about a person longing to be home, but the sea is wide and he or she can't cross over. The person laments that as aging occurs, friends and family are missed more and more. One of the most beautiful melodies I've ever heard, it has been performed by soloists Charlotte Church, Joan Baez, and Jackie Evanko and groups, The Chieftains and Celtic Woman. In the life of Richard Wagner, the year 1872 was marked by decisive events such as the family's relocation to Bayreuth - the master's new home and workplace - and the laying of the cornerstone of the Festspielhaus, which was staged to stunning effect. Next to consolidating the new festival enterprise, Wagner continued to work on the third act of Gotterdammerung, authored several theoretical writings on music, and pressed ahead with the publication plans for his autobiography Mein Leben. The composer's many activities are reflected in the uncommonly large number of 401 transmitted letters and telegrams which Martin Durrer meticulously edited for this volume of the Wagner Correspondence.1872: more than one letter a day.

Psalm 137 Super flumina Babylonis also known as By the rivers of Babylon was an inspiration for many composers including Camille Saint-Saëns. He repeatedly occupied himself with his psalm motet for solo soprano, mixed choir, saxophone quartet, string orchestra and organ, originally composed in 1854. Two of the four versions â?? the first version in Latin and a much later version in English for alto solo, SATB choir and piano â?? are now available for the first time in Urtext performing editions taking a meticulous account of all the sources.Saint-Saëns lived up to his reputation as an innovative composer by exploring the use of the saxophone family in sacred music just a few years after the invention of these instruments. The successful combination of voice and saxophone creates a special sound experience.
