With the publication of the first collective, scholarly edition of the a cappella works of Sándor Veress (1907-1992), the publishers were paying a long-standing debt in the Veress centenary year. Volume I contains all the already published works for children s, female and male choirs, together with those of the works of his mature period preserved in manuscript which have attained their definitive form: seven choral cycles or suites, and five single-movement works. The musical concept of the mainly 3- or 4-movement Hungarian folksong suites and cantatas is closely akin to that of the composer s instrumental folksong series written at the same time. Also included in thevolume are a musical setting of Sándor Pet fi s poem Orbán and arrangements of two Swiss folksongs and a children s song of American origin (Mary had a little lamb).

Mit der von wissenschaftlichem Anspruch geprägten Veröffentlichung der ersten Sammelausgabe der Chorwerke von Sándor Veress (1907-1992) im Jahre des Veress-Zentenariums 2007 tilgte der Verlag alte Schulden. Der erste Band beinhaltet neben allen schon früher publizierten Kinder-, Frauen- und Männerchören auch als Manuskript erhalten gebliebene, ausgereifte Werke, die über eine endgültige Form verfügen: sieben Chorzyklen bzw. Chorsuiten und fünf einsätzige Werke. Das musikalische Konzept der großteils 3-4-sätzigen Volksliedsuiten und -Kantaten ist eng mit den zur selben Zeit komponierten instrumentalen Volksliedserien des Komponisten verwandt. Weitere Bestandteile desBandes sind die Vertonung des Gedichts Orbán von Sándor Pet fi und die Bearbeitung der zwei schweizerischen Volkslieder sowie eines aus Amerika stammenden Kinderliedes (Mary Had a Little Lamb).

'The significance of the Rhapsody composed in 1904 in Gerlicepuszta and Pozsony is well shown by the fact that Bartók subsequently reserved the designation 'Opus 1' of his last, mature opus numbering for this piece. By choosing this genre Bartók was clearly following in Liszt's footsteps. But he did not merely follow the Hungarian Rhapsodies with their parading of folkloristic art songs in a virtuoso instrumental fantasy. The formal coherence of Bartók's work allows us to infer the influence of the large-scale Liszt compositions he then knew, such as the B minor Sonata. Unlike Liszt, Bartók builds his Rhapsody not on familiar melodies but on themes of his own invention, yet hisstyle is still that of nineteenth-century folkiness, and draws on the art-music tradition based on the verbunkos and the csárdás.' Isaac Albéniz (1860-1909), the renowned pianist and composer, was one of the most significant Spanish masters of the second half of the 19th century. Following studies in Paris and Brussels he went on a world tour and earned great success as a pianist. From 1880 onwards he belonged to Ferenc Liszt's circle and improved his piano technique as a pupil of the Hungarian master. Besides his operas, orchestral works and songs he also composed a considerable number of piano works. One of his most popular cycles for the piano is the Op. 47 Suite espagnola (1886), the movements of which he named after Spanish towns and provinces. The composition is thus an enthusiastic tribute to hishomeland: a fascinating embodiment of Spanish folk music elaborated with Lisztian virtuosity.
