The Hawaiian word for slack key guitar, kÄ« hōâ??alu, means to â??loosen the keyâ? or retune some of the strings to create a harmonious sound with an open or alternate tuning. Slack key is a fingerpicking style characterized by strong alternating bass lines played with the thumb. While slack key can be played on any guitar, most players prefer a nylon- or steel-stringed acoustic instrument.

This book presents 25 intermediate to advanced traditional and original tunes in the Hawaiian slack key style. Melodies are often harmonized in sixths or thirds played with or without double stops. Techniques like syncopated bass lines, hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, and harmonics are tastefully employed to evoke the images of ocean breezes, swaying palms, hula dancers and white sandy beaches.

One of Percy Aldridge Grainger's most popular encores was improvisations on English Morris Dance tunes that he programmed as Country Gardens. An instant hit, Grainger finalized this setting in spring 1918, and after publication in 1919, the sales of the sheet music broke publishing records and brought in the sort of steady income that is the envy of composers everywhere. While he used the funds to subsidize the careers of many fellow artists, Grainger became so identified with this rather lightweight piece that he came to despise it. Publisher G. Schirmer, wishing to capitalize on the popularity of Country Gardens, assigned Adolf Schmid, one of their in-house writers, to create this excellent orchestral version published in 1925. Schmid was an Austrian-American composer of some stature who, as a staff writer for the firm G. Schirmer, created orchestral versions of Grainger's Irish Tune from County Derry and Children's March, as well as music by numerous other composers. Schmid's orchestration served as the source material for a band version of Country Gardens that appeared in 1931, attributed to Tom Clark. The following note appeared on the concert band Synoptic Score (a most un-Grainger-like term): String-Bass and Harp (or any other) parts from Adolf Schmid's Arrangement of this number for orchestra (Galaxy No. 269) may be used with this band arrangement, affirming the relationship between Schmid's orchestration and Clark's band version. The 2nd movement offers emotional storytelling with clear tonality but with moments of more complex stacked harmonies and tension. The 3rd movement is lively with raw energy. This energetic composition, written in the style of traditional fiddle-tunes, gradually modulates from B minor to D Major. Players will encounter authentic fiddle techniques such as shuffle-bowing, chops, and double-stops at a brisk tempo. The chop is accomplished by dropping the bow firmly on the D and A strings at the frog, sinking and stopping with slight motion toward the scroll. Players should straighten their fingers on the frog and the bow hair should be tilted toward the bridge when performing this technique. A syncopated bass accompaniment and relentless pace depict a stormy winter season, melting into spring. Each section is given interesting melodic and accompaniment lines, with exciting accented rhythms that require all players to match bow placement, internalize a common tempo, and listen across the ensemble for a precise, focused sound.
