In his quintet dating from 1993 Heinio draws on Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass. The musicians performing this work are offered a touch of physical drama. As they play they are expected to speak and hum fragments from Carroll's book going through the dialogue between Alice, Tweedledum and Tweedledee; this adds its own rhythmic and dramatic perspective to the exciting music. The work was premiered at the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in summer 1994.

Intermezzo is the second movement of Satoshi Yagisawa’s Clarinet Concerto. The concerto was first performed by Higashi-Hiroshima Wind Ensemble in Hiroshima, Japan in 2010 with guest performer Shinsuke Hashimoto, clarinettist with the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra and was conducted by Atsushi Kageyama. Inspiration for this work came from the fact that both Satoshi Yagisawa and Shinsuke Hashimoto graduated from Musashino Academia Musicae.Clarinet Concerto>/I> is the pinnacle of Satoshi Yagisawa’s “Concerto Series” which also features his Suite Concertante for Piano and WindOrchestra, Trumpet Concerto, Trombone Concerto, Saxophone Concertino, andConcertino for Solo Percussion and Wind Orchestra.Yagisawa’s characteristic heartfelt theme in the second movement is especially popular and consequently—entitled Intermezzo—it is often performed independently.Soloist: Grade 4

Intermezzo is het tweede deel van Satoshi Yagisawa’s Clarinet Concerto. Het concert als geheel werd in 2010 onder leiding van dirigent Atsushi Kageyama door het ensemble in première gebracht, samen met gastklarinettist Shinsuke Hashimoto - die werkzaam is bij het Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra. It may be surprising to see a fanfare piece commissioned by a Japanese ensemble, since fanfare orchestras are typically found in Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg, and also France and Switzerland. Senzoku Gakuen is one of the largest and mostprestigious music universities in Japan, and home to a wide variety of ensembles and orchestras. Since 2006 they have had a fanfare orchestra, which was started by Sotaru Fukaishi, a euphonium teacher who felt further performance opportunity wasneeded for saxhorn instruments. Fukaishi had loved the sound of fanfare orchestras ever since visiting the World Music Contest in Kerkrade (Holland) several years earlier. Jan Van der Roost was involved with this new initiative from the beginning,and they were also joined by Manu Mellaerts for certain projects. The Dean of the music department, Professor Kazuo Tomioka, fully supports the ensemble and commissioned Ostinati. The première took place on June 11th at Maeda Hall inMizonokuchi (Kawasaki) where Senzoku Gakuen is based. The piece opens with an impressive timpani solo, followed by brass and saxophone. The rhythmical pulse remains constant and the music is fiery and assertive in character. A pentatonic melodygradually emerges and the music loses its vehemency and softens. The initial percussion ostinati subsequently recurs and the first section of the piece concludes in a similar mood to the opening. The second movement is sweet and melodic, opening witha long passage for the saxophone family in a minor key. The same theme then appears in the major and is developed upon; the music builds to a majestic orchestral forte, reminiscent of a pipe organ in its sonority. The theme returns in the originalminor key with a change in instrumentation leading the movement to a quiet and peaceful end on a soft E minor chord. The finale starts with percussion: a four-bar pattern is repeated several times over which the movement’s melodic themes areintroduced. These melodic elements are varied and used in different versions and the ostinato idea, which characterizes the entire piece, is highlighted. The theme travels through the orchestra, appearing on various instruments and in variousregisters. It captures the listener’s attention and displays the full range of sound and colour within the fanfare orchestra.

Het is misschien verrassend dat dit fanfarewerk is geschreven in opdracht van een Japans ensemble, aangezien fanfareorkesten vooral te vinden zijn in België, Nederland en Luxemburg, en ook wel in Frankrijk en Zwitserland. SenzokuGakuen is een van de grootste en meest prestigieuze muziekopleidingen van Japan, en de thuisbasis van een grote verscheidenheid van ensembles en orkesten. In 2006 is er een fanfareorkest opgericht, en wel door Sotaru Fukaishi, eeneuphoniumdocent die vond dat er meer mogelijkheden moesten komen voor optredens met saxhoorninstrumenten. Fukaishi had enkele jaren daarvoor genoten van de fanfareklank toen hij het Wereld Muziek Concours in Kerkrade bezocht. DeBelgische componist Jan Van der Roost was van het begin af aan betrokken bij dit nieuwe initiatief, en ook Manu Mellaerts werd voor een aantal projecten aangetrokken. Het hoofd van de muziekfaculteit, professor Kazuo Tomioka, staatgeheel achter het ensemble en gaf de opdracht tot het schrijven van Ostinati. Es mag überraschen, dass dieses Fanfareorchesterwerk ausgerechnet von einem japanischen Ensemble in Auftrag gegeben wurde, da Fanfareorchester doch eher in Belgien, den Niederlanden oder Luxemburg oder auch in Frankreich oder Schweiz zu finden sind. Senzoku Gakuen ist eine der größten und renommiertesten Musikschulen Japans und Heimstätte einer Vielfalt an Ensembles und Orchestern. Im Jahr 2006 wurde ein Fanfareorchester gegründet. Den Anstoß gab Sotaru Fukaishi, ein Euphoniumlehrer, der den Instrumenten der Saxhorn-Familie mehr Spielmöglichkeiten bieten wollte. Fukaishi hatte sich einige Jahre zuvor bei der Weltmeisterschaft in Kerkrade (Holland) in den Klang vonFanfareorchestern verliebt. Jan Van der Roost war von Beginn an in die Entwicklung dieser Idee involviert und, einige Projekte betreffend, ebenso Manu Mellaerts. Der Dekan des Musik-Colleges, Professor Kazuo Tomioka, steht voll und ganz hinter dem Ensemble und gab Ostinati in Auftrag. Die Premiere fand am 11. Juni 2011 in der Maeda Hall in Mizonokuchi statt, dem Heimatort der Schule Senzoku Gakuen. Das Stück beginnt mit einem eindrucksvollen Paukensolo, bevor Blechbläser und Saxophon einsetzen. Der rhythmische Puls bleibt konstant unter einer feurigen, nachdrücklichen Musik. Eine pentatonische Melodie bildet sich nach und nach heraus, während die Musik an Heftigkeit verliert und sanfter wird. Die anfänglichen Ostinati im Schlagwerk kehren zurück und so endet der erste Satz des Werkes in einer der Eröffnung ähnlichen Stimmung. Der zweite Satz ist lieblich und melodiös. Er beginnt mit einem langen Abschnitt für die Saxophone in Moll. Dann erscheint das gleiche Thema in Dur und durchläuft eine Entwicklung; die Musik baut sich zu einem majestätischen orchestralen Forte auf, das in seiner Klangfülle an eine Orgel erinnert. Dann kehrt das Thema in seiner ursprünglichen Moll-Tonart und in veränderter Instrumentierung zurück, um den Satz ruhig und friedvoll in einem e-Moll-Akkord enden zu lassen.

Il pourrait paraître surprenant qu’un ensemble japonais puisse commander une pièce pour orchestre de fanfare, puisque l’on rencontre surtout ce type de formation en Belgique, aux Pays-Bas et au Luxembourg, ainsi qu’en France et en Suisse. Senzoku Gakuen, l’une des plus grandes et plus prestigieuses académies de musique du Japon, compte une grande variété d’ensembles et d’orchestres. En 2006 s’y est ajouté un orchestre de fanfare fondé par Sotaru Fukaishi, un professeur d’euphonium qui pensait qu’il était nécessaire d’offrir de plus larges possibilités aux cuivres de la région. Depuis qu’il avait assisté au World Music Contest de Kerkrade (Pays-Bas), plusieurs années auparavant,Fukaishi se prit de passion pour le son chaud et généreux de l’orchestre de fanfare, une formation atypique au Japon. Jan Van der Roost a favorablement adhéré cette nouvelle initiative, tandis que Manu Mellaerts collabora avec les deux hommes afin de concrétiser certains projets. Une mélodie pentatonique émerge graduellement, alors que la trame musicale diminue d’intensité et s’adoucit. L’ostinato la percussion revient fréquemment et la première partie de l’oeuvre se termine dans un climat semblable celui du début. Le deuxième mouvement, doux et romancé, débute avec un long passage en mode mineur joué par les saxophones. Le même thème apparaît alors en mode majeur et se développe peu peu ; la musique s’intensifie pour arriver un majestueux et orchestral forte dont les sonorités rappellent celles d’un orgue d’église. Puis le thème revient sa tonalité mineure d’origine avec un changement d’instrumentation qui mène.

Stepstones was commissioned by the Harmonie Victoria Téiteng from Tétange (Luxembourg) for its 125th anniversary. The composer references the music of Rossini, who died 25 years before the commissioning band was founded. The second element this work refers to the legendary conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein who was born at the time the band celebrated its 25th anniversary. This spectacular overture has a strong historical and musical story and is ideal to open your concert in style and grandeur!

British composer Philip Sparke was asked to write this arrangement of Hymn to Frei for the Norwegian Brass Band Frei Hornmusikk . Sparke had already used part of this hymn by a composer well-known in the home region of the band in The Saga of Haakon the Good. In A Norwegian Hymn, three verses of the tune can be heard: the first is performed by various soloists, followed by a quieter second verse, before the third verse brings the piece to a triumphal close. A beautiful piece, which is also excellent to use to work on musicality with bands in lower divisions.

Philip Sparke arrangeerde Hymne to Frei voor de Noorse Brass Band Frei Hornmusikk. In A Norwegian Hymn zijn ook drie verzen uit zijn eerdere werk The Saga of Haakon the Good te horen. De eerste wordt uitgevoerd door diverse solisten, gevolgd door een rustiger tweede couplet. Het derde deel brengt het werk naar een triomfantelijk einde. Een mooi werk waarmee u uitstekend kunt werken aan de muzikaliteit van orkesten in de lagere divisies.

Der britische Komponist Philip Sparke schrieb im Auftrag der Frei Hornmusikk aus Norwegen diese Bearbeitung der Hymn to Frei aus der Feder eines bekannten Komponisten aus der Heimatregion dieser Brass Band. Sparke hatte Teile dieses Kirchenlieds bereits zuvor in The Saga of Haakon the Good verwendet. Eine schönes Stück, dass sich außerdem sehr gut für Brass Bands niedrigerer Klassen eignet, die an ihrer Musikalität arbeiten wollen.

Le compositeur britannique Philip Sparke fut commandé d’écrire cet arrangement de Hymn to Frei pour la fanfare norvégienne Frei Hornmusikk. Sparke avait déj intégré une partie de ce cantique, écrit par un compositeur connu dans la région natale de cette fanfare, dans « The Saga of Haakon the Good ». On peut entendre trois couplets de la mélodie dans A Norwegian Hymn : le premier joué par plusieurs solistes, suivi par le deuxième qui est plus tranquille, avant que le troisième ne conclue la pièce d’une façon triomphante. Un morceau magnifique qui est aussi idéal pour travailler sur la musicalité des ensembles des divisions inférieures.

Guardians of the Waves was commissioned by the Japan Coast Guard Band to celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2018. They gave the premiere as part of a 30th anniversary concert on November 8th that year. Set in traditionalmarch form, Guardians of the Waves opens with a short introduction, which leads to the main theme, played initially by the brass and then repeated with a florid woodwind descant. The theme is extended and morphs into asecond theme, first played tutti and then quietly repeated by bassoon, tenor sax and euphonium. This leads to a conventional ‘bass strain’, played twice with varying accompaniments. A quieter trio section follows, delicatelyscored and featuring the tenor instruments of the band. Taken up by the full band, this leads back to a recall of the introduction and a return to the main two themes, which lead to a triumphal close.

De première vond plaats tijdens het jubileumconcert op 8 november van datjaar. Het werk, dat is gecomponeerd in een traditionele marsvorm, begint met een korte introductie die het hoofdthema inleidt, dat aanvankelijk wordt gespeeld door het koper en dan wordt herhaald met een weelderige discant in hethout. Het thema wordt voortgezet en gaat over in een tweede thema, eerst tutti gespeeld en rustig herhaald door fagot, tenorsax en eufonium. L’orchestre a créé l’œuvre dans le cadre d’un concert d’anniversaire le 8 novembre decette même année. Écrite en forme de marche traditionnelle, Guardians of the Waves s’ouvre avec une courte introduction qui mène au thème principal, interprété d’abord par les cuivres puis repris avec un déchant fleuri parles bois. Le thème est prolongé et se morphe en un second thème, d’abord en tutti, puis répété doucement par les bassons, saxophones ténor et euphoniums. Ce passage mène une mélodie conventionnelle dans les graves, jouée deuxfois avec divers accompagnements. Vient ensuite un trio plus calme, orchestré avec délicatesse et mettant en avant les instruments ténor. Repris par l’orchestre entier, ce passage est suivi d’un rappel de l’introduction avant unretour aux deux thèmes principaux, qui mènent une conclusion triomphale.

Het wordt dan overgenomen door het complete orkest en brengt onsterug naar de inleiding en de twee hoofdthema’s, uitmondend in een triomfantelijk slot.

Guardians of the Waves wurde von der Japan Coast Guard Band anlässlich ihres 30-jährigen Bestehens im Jahr 2018 in Auftrag gegeben. Die Uraufführung fand am 8. November 2018 im Rahmen eines Jubiläumskonzertes statt.Guardians of the Waves wurde als traditioneller Marsch komponiert und beginnt mit einer kurzen Einleitung, die zum Hauptthema führt. Dieses wird zunächst von den Blechbläsern gespielt und dann von den Oberstimmen in denHolzbläsern mit Verzierungen wiederholt. Das Thema wird erweitert und geht in ein zweites Thema über, das zunächst vom Tutti gespielt und dann von Fagott, Tenorsaxophon und Euphonium leise wiederholt wird. Anschließend erklingteine traditionelle Melodie in den Bassinstrumenten, die mit unterschiedlicher Begleitung zweimal gespielt wird. Es folgt ein ruhigeres Trio, das zart besetzt ist und die Tenorinstrumente des Blasorchesters hervorhebt. Dies wirdschließlich vom gesamten Blasorchester aufgegriffen und führt zu einer Wiederholung der Einleitung und einer Rückkehr zu den beiden Hauptthemen, die in einen triumphalen Schluss überleiten.

Guardians of the Waves est une commande de l’Harmonie de la Gendarmerie maritime du Japon pour marquer son 30e anniversaire, en 2018. L’orchestre a créé l’œuvre dans le cadre d’un concert d’anniversaire le 8 novembre decette même année. Écrite en forme de marche traditionnelle, Guardians of the Waves s’ouvre avec une courte introduction qui mène au thème principal, interprété d’abord par les cuivres puis repris avec un déchant fleuri parles bois. Le thème est prolongé et se morphe en un second thème, d’abord en tutti, puis répété doucement par les bassons, saxophones ténor et euphoniums. Ce passage mène une mélodie conventionnelle dans les graves, jouée deuxfois avec divers accompagnements. Vient ensuite un trio plus calme, orchestré avec délicatesse et mettant en avant les instruments ténor. Repris par l’orchestre entier, ce passage est suivi d’un rappel de l’introduction avant unretour aux deux thèmes principaux, qui mènent une conclusion triomphale.

Take It Easy! zorgt met drie thema’s voor een zorgeloze stemming. Het vrolijke eerste thema wordt smaakvol begeleid door de ritmesectie. Het tweede thema bestaat uit over elkaar gecomponeerde elementen, de melodieën wordenelegant vermengd. Het derde thema voert ons terug naar het feestelijke begin, de tussenmaten geven de gelaagde melodieën van het tweede thema weer. Als laatste komen de drie thema’s nog één keer aan bod.
