Elgar's delightful Salut d'Amour, one of his earliest successes, dates from 1889, when Elgar had just turned 30: this proved to be a year of great happiness for him, for at that time he married Caroline Alice Roberts - a lady who was to mean so much to him as man and musician. It is not too fanciful to hear, in this charming piece, a musical manifestation of his love for her. This arrangement for piano retains al the beauty of the original.

Salutation was commissioned by Japanese conductor and broadcaster, Yutaka Nishida, a dear friend of the composer Philip Sparke. Salutation follows fairly conventional march form. A short fanfare introduces the main theme, played by clarinets and saxophones. A bridge passage, mainly in the brass, heralds a change of key and a legato second subject, again played initially by the clarinets, which leads to the conventional trio theme, which is then repeated by the full band. Sections of the second subject lead back to the home key and a return of the main theme, embellished with woodwinds.

Just based on its title, this piece has to be celebratory and up-beat, which it is! It opens with a stately fanfare, first played on the low brass before the entire band joins in. This gives way to a contrasting lyrical theme which develops until it joins up with the fanfare to complete the opening section. A lively and heavily syncopated vivo follows, cast as a traditional march, complete with a 'bass strain' and trio. After the original march theme returns, a climax leads back to a reprise of the majestic opening, which brings the piece to an appropriately triumphant close.

George Nicholson's Salut for String Quartet. The death of Peter Cropper in May 2015 was an immeasurable blow to the musical community, especially to those of us who knew him not only as a wonderful, wise musician but also as a warm colleague and friend. His unceasing devotion to the cause of music and to the promotion of excellent standards in performance was, in my experience, beyond compare. The finest tribute we can pay him is to continue to make music to the best of our ability and to go on reaching out, to continue to explore and learn. I always felt that I would need to commemorate Peter in a piece for String Quartet, the medium he was most obviously associated with, and in Salut it is understandably the first Violin part that has pride of place. The piece develops contrasting textures and registers, and above all it is concerned with the influence of the extremely high Violin writing at the beginning on the rest of the ensemble. - George Nicholson Salut was first performed by the Ligeti Quartet, Firth Hall, University of Sheffield, 17 May 2016.

Salutation was originally composed for a cappella choir to a poem by Bengali poet and musician Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). The music takes up the spiritual message of the poem, that we live our lives in one salutation to God ending back in an eternal home. Phillip Littlemore's brilliant arrangement for concert band adds a work of great contemplative beauty to the repertoire.

Robert Helmschrott, born in 1938, was professor at the Munich Musikhochschule where he was also headmaster from 1995-2003. He wrote numerous choral and orchestral works and is one of the most important German representatives of contemporary church music. His work 'Salut' is a one-movement concert piece which is rewarding for both players. After a lengthy introduction for solo trumpet, both instruments present fireworks of brilliant idiomatic figurations, yet also make sure that pensive, lyrical tones get their fair share too. A rewarding concert piece of ca. 8 minutes' duration.

Disappointed that he could not succeed with his musical ambitions in the metropolis of London, the English composer Edward Elgar retreated to the provinces. In the summer of 1888, his fiancée Caroline Alice Roberts surprised him with a self-written poem, Love's Grace. Elgar returned the favor with a love note for piano. Offered to the music publisher Schott, the gem was to become Edward Elgar's first published work in 1889. However, the breakthrough would only come with the Frenchized title Salut d'amour. The miniature has now become a classic hit and is also likely to enchant in the piano trio version.
