This cantata is a composition by Kuhnau for the first of the Christmas holidays [Christmas Day] and one of his most extensive works. It is underlaid with the free poetry of a hitherto anonymous author, not including any Bible or chorale texts. Though the dating has not yet been clarified, the structure - two recitative-aria pairings, framed by two magnificent tutti movements - indicates a genesis period within the last years of the composer's tenure as St. Thomas cantor in Leipzig. Additional indications are the triple use of the da capo form as well as the four-part vocal setting, partly differentiated in solo and tutti, taking the individual parts to the limits of their ambitus as was later customary with Johann Sebastian Bach.Particularly noteworthy are two details of the instrumentation: Firstly, there are three violin parts in the score, the first of which has to master an exceptionally virtuoso solo part. Secondly, in the third movement, Kuhnau expressly notates an obbligato organ solo part, not to be found in any of his other extant compositions. This virtuosic part also already foreshadows the later and far more famous obbligato organ parts in various Bach cantatas.

This frenetic assortment of familiar chorale melodies by Martin Luther was composed to mark the celebrations of Luther's music (and the 800th anniversary of the choir of St Thomas in Leipzig) in 2012. Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott [A mighty fortress is our God] appears as a powerful ritornello theme, elaborated with tender lyricism just before the end. A chorale setting of Verleih uns Frieden gnadiglich [Lord, in thy mercy grant us peace] makes a calm middle section for this otherwise highly demanding organ piece. The 2012 setting for organ duet has been arranged as a virtuoso work for organ solo in 2015. An organ with three manuals is required.

In 1860 Camille Saint-Saens composed his Oratorio de Noel for five vocal soloists, mixed choir, strings, organ and harp. The work, sung in Latin, is based on texts from the Old and New Testaments, the Psalms and Gospels, as well as the Catholic Christmas liturgy. A distinctive chamber music-like instrumentation, with lyrical soloistic parts and a modest choral part combine to create a basic pastoral mood which has led this Christmas Oratorio to become one of the most performed works by Saint-Saens. Vier Seiten for violoncello is an attempt to present an event that in reality takes about two seconds in extreme slow motion, thus making even the micromovements visible or audible beyond the straight line of motion.When I composed the piece, the fatal accident of Ayrton Senna came to my mind again and again - an accident which was shown on TV in slow motion again and again until it became unbearable. The fast motion of the car immediately before the crash into a concrete wall, a motion which was no longer purposeful but out of control and which had the car pulled to and fro and from side to side, was followed by that crash. In this extreme slow motion, it is no longer shown as a crash but as the fast telescoping of carbon fibre, metal and human body parts.After this crash, as a postlude so to speak, everything suddenly slowed down, tyres and automotive particles floating in the air, the torso of the vehicle swinging until the motion stopped. It was not until this moment that I realized that the whole presentation of the incident had been accompanied by paralyzing silence.- Thomas Larcher

Noodivihik deals with time on a macro and a micro level. The macro time level is divided into two parts: fast and slow. The first part ('citric acid') works with two basic rhythmic patterns and their irritation through the addition or subtraction of note values. The interweaving of the two sectors, in which these basic patterns appear separately, results in a structure of the time in the middle (that is, within 'critic acid').The second part ('leave your baggage unattended') combines the aforementioned two levels through the superimposition of natural and prepared tones on the piano.
