Weaving together a fabric of history and presence, pain and struggle, exile and homecoming, Goin’ Home is an engaging musical canvas whose complex palette is challenging as it is rewarding.

For SSATB unaccompanied Commemorating the martyrdom of St Catharine, this reflective piece sets the Antiphon at First Vespers, Feast of All Saints alongside a thought-provoking contemporary poem by Colin Tan, full of vivid imagery. Melodic lines reminiscent of plainchant enhance the contemplative mood.

A modern equivalent might be when pigs fly. Keep it light and bring out the differing accents in the meters, especially the dotted quarter notes. While there is no percussion part written in the score, we had a djembe player play along to bring out the various accents. Feel free to add your own as well. A well-known text set by a veteran composer who knows how to make it singularly superior. The melody is immediately entrancing, a middle section introduces a high church chant-like, liturgical sound, then the melody resumes and brings us home. The passionate lyrics, although from scripture, make it appropriate for church and concert use.

The Good Friday Responsory Tenebrae factae sunt for six-part chorus was commissioned in 2012 for Peking University Student Choir and was premiered at the World Choir Games in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA conducted by Hou Xijin. It is an ambitious work with a fervent intensity. Matsushita sets the two last words of Jesus, Deus meus, ut quid me dereliquisti? [My God, why hast thou forsaken me] and Pater, in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum [Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit] as pained outcries in Stravinskyian harshness, in chords characterized by tritones, as a truly superhuman work of redemption whose Easter message of hope only appears in the last conciliatory F major chord. Although this work lies slightly beyond the upper limit of the musical and vocal technical demands of the Carus Contemporary series, it is well within the abilities of ambitious chamber choirs.
