Text language: German. Text: Schiller, Friedrich.
It's about 200 years since Beethoven scribbled down a theme in D minor in his sketch book, which he later used, slightly altered, in the 2nd movement of his 9th Symphony. Beethoven had thought of setting Schiller's Ode to Joy much earlier. As early as 1803 Ferdinand Ries mentioned a complete setting of the text by Beethoven which no longer survives. The vocal score of the finale of the 9th Symphony is based on the vocal score made by Carl Reinecke around the end of the 19th century. The version by Reinecke, popular worldwide, closely reflects the sound of the orchestral writing, yet at the same time is remains playable. Stefan Schuck has revised this historic vocal score, in the process taking into account recent research findings. The new Carus vocal score contains rehearsal letters from all current versions of the orchestral material, and is thus compatible with all available music editions. In the presentation of this edition, particular attention has been paid to the practical needs of (choral) singers and repetiteurs.

Haydn wrote the Missa Sancti Nicolai in 1772, probably for the name day of prince Nicolaus Esterhazy. This work is on a larger scale than the other missae breves, and in the orchestra two oboes and two horns join the strings. At the very beginning of the Kyrie the gentle, pastoral character which distinguishes this work is established. Haydn reprises the music of the Kyrie in the Dona nobis pacem to round off the work. The full score contains at the same time the organ part. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.4060500.

The Harmoniemesse is the last of the High Masses which Haydn composed between 1796 and 1802 for the name day of the Princess Esterhazy, and at the same time it was the last composition which Haydn ever completed. It was given its name because of the important role which the wind instruments play in the Mass. In a number of passages the present critical edition differs from previous editions and, consequently, it follows other readings of the sources. Hence it is also to be regarded as a contribution towards a new evaluation of the work. Score available separately - see item CA.4061200.

Haydn's so-called Great Organ Solo Mass in E flat major is among those works by Joseph Haydn which early in its history enjoyed widespread dissemination. The E flat major Mass, with an unusual scoring including two English horns in the orchestra, was composed around 1770 during the first years of Haydn's tenure as Music Director for the Court of Esterhazy. Despite the readily playable, effective part for organ, employed prominently as a solo instrument in the piece, the Missa in honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae, which was composed for a Feast to the Blessed Virgin Mary, is seldom performed today. The new critical edition hopes to stimulate new interest in this work. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4060300.

Within approximately six weeks Haydn, in 1801, composed his Creation Mass as the fifth of altogether six late missae solemnes commissioned by his employer, Prince Nikolaus II. Esterhazy. The sobriquet Creation Mass is not authentic, but it is probably based on the quotation in the Gloria taken from the oratorio Die Schopfung. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4061100.
