Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire.The composer writes: The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing*, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine andastrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life.An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. Five States of Change se compose donc de cinq parties égales qui reflètent assez librement ce cycle des émotions. J’ai essayé de faire en sorte que la musique se développe de manière fluide et naturelle, avec un minimum de répétitions. Chaque mouvement s’ouvre partir des éléments musicaux qui parachèvent le mouvement précédent, tandis que L’idea di comporre questo brano è venuta a Philip Sparke leggendo un articolo sulla filosofi a cinese che si basa su cicli di cinque elementi, fasi e stadi di cambiamento. A Sparke interessavano in particolare il flusso dei sentimenti come la meditazione, il lutto, la paura, la rabbia e la gioia. A partire da questi elementi ha composto un impressionante “viaggio†musicale suddiviso in cinque sezioni, tematicamente intrecciate tra loro, quasi a voler formare un cerchio.

The source of inspiration for the composer was the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl in Russia. The first movement Ostinato expresses desperation, helplessness, fear and anger. The themes from the first movement are further exposed in the second movement Fantasia which has a spectacular finale. De inspiratiebron voor dit werk vormde de kernramp in het Russische Tsjernobyl die plaatsvond op 26 april 1986. In het eerste deel, Ostinato, worden wanhoop, machteloosheid, angst en woede uitgedrukt. Deze thematiek wordt inhet snelle tweede deel, Fantasia, verder doorontwikkeld. Contrasten was in 1986 het verplichte werk voor de derde divisie van de Nederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen. In 1989 was deze compositie het verplichte werkvoor de finaleronde van de National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.

The Innocent Condemned tells of the so-called buck riders (bokkerijders) who, in the middle of the 18th Century caused mayhem in the area around Limburg. Calmer passages in the music depict the fear of the locals, while a vivo furioso describes a night raid, and powerful drum sounds together with emotional musical lines illustrate the execution of an innocent. A gripping piece of history caught in music! Deze indrukwekkende compositie vertelt het verhaal van de ‘Bokkenrijders’, een bende rovers die in de helft van de 18e eeuw de streek rond Limburg onveilig maakten. Vele burgers werden nadien valselijk beschuldigd bokkenrijders te zijn geweest. Ze werden ten onrechte veroordeeld en brutaal terechtgesteld. In deze programmamuziek van Rob Goorhuis kun je de gebeurtenissen terughoren. The Innocent Condemned (Der unschuldig Verurteilte) erzählt von den so genannten Bokkerijders“ (Bockreitern), die Mitte des 18. Jahrhundert die Gegend um Limburg unsicher machten. Ruhige Passagen im Werk zeugen von der Angst der Bürger, ein Vivo furioso beschreibt einen nächtlichen Überfall und vehemente Schlagzeugklänge sowie emotionale musikalische Linien illustrieren die Hinrichtung eines Unschuldigen. Ein packendes Stück Geschichte in Musik gefasst!Selon la légende, les Buckriders étaient un gang de voleurs sans scrupules qui dévalisaient les fermes et les presbytères lors de leur passage. Il a été dit que les membres avaient fait un pacte avec Satan et chevauchaient dans le ciel dos de chèvres. Les passages calmes dans l’œuvre témoignent de la crainte des citoyens, un Vivo furioso décrit un raid de nuit et les sons véhéments des percussions suivis de lignes musicales lyriques illustrent l’exécution d’un innocent. On average, about eight thousand (mostly light) earthquakes occur worldwide each day. Composer Jan de Haan has always been fascinated by this natural phenomenon. Earthquake portrays the beautiful South-American peninsula, Isla Iberi which lies directly on a major fault line. The peace and tranquility is shattered by a major tremor and the terrified people flee in fear. In addition to showing the earthquakes destructive power, Earthquake also conveys the courage and faith of the industrious people of Isla Iberia, as they energetically start the reconstruction of their beloved residential area. Earthquake is dedicated to the memory of all victims of the devastating Asiantsunami which occurred on 26 December 2004. The composition ".The Fever Tree". in 2008 was commissioned by the Music Association of Central and Eastern Netherlands St.Willibrord as a gift to all its members on the occasion of the formation of a national music organization and the elimination of the music union for Central and Eastern Netherlands St.Willibrord. The fever tree is a controversial legend about St. Willibrord (658-739). The daughter of a pagan chieftain of Hoemannen that made the area around Heumen unsafe, was seriously ill. They feared for her life. The chief of the gang turned to predatory Willibrord, who same time in this region led mission. Willibrord commanded theman to repent and a headband of the girl to a certain special tree to hang. The desperate captain obeyed, and his daughter was a miraculous heal. Then came the anger of the Hoemannen against their leader, who in their eyes had committed treason by the group to convert. They abused themselves to him and killed him brutally. De koortsboom is een omstreden legende rond St. Willibrord (658-739). De dochter van de heidense hoofdman van de Hoemannen, diehet gebied rond Heumen onveilig maakten, was ernstig ziek. Men vreesde voor haar leven. De hoofdman van de roofzuchtige bende wende zich tot Willibrord, die in dezelfde tijd in deze streek missioneerde. Willibrord gebood deman zich te bekeren én een hoofdband van het meisje aan een bepaalde, bijzondere boom te hangen. De radeloze hoofdman gehoorzaamde en zijn dochter werd op wonderbaarlijke wijze genezen. Toen keerde de woede van de Hoemannen zichtegen hun leider, die in hun ogen verraad had gepleegd aan de groep door zich te bekeren. Ze vergrepen zich aan hem en vermoordden hem op gruwelijke wijze. De dochter bleef in grote droefheid achter, getroost door Willibrord.De compositie kent de volgende tableaus: - Andante moderato - de roeping van Willibrord - Allegro moderato - Willibrord trekt door het Brabantse land en tracht de bevolking te bekeren - Vivace - deHoemannen terroriseren de inwoners van het gebied rond Heumen - Andante - de genezing van het zieke meisje en de bekering van de hoofdman - Inquieto - de wraak van de Hoemannen - Adagio - treurzang over de doodvan de hoofdman.

KYO-WA is a suite in three movements - Fanfare, Chorale and March, which composer Satoshi Yagisawa wrote individually year on year between 2008 and 2010 for a symphonic wind band. The word KYO in the title can mean resonance, but also togetherness, working together and competition. WA means peace and harmony. These ideas, together with a broad palette of emotions from sadness and fear to hope and rapture, have been woven into a piece that is typical of his new compositional style.KYO-WA is een driedelige suite, bestaande uit Fanfare, Chorale en March. Satoshi Yagisawa componeerde dit werk voor symfonisch blaasorkest. Het woord KYO in de titel is een Japans homoniem. Het kan zowel resonantie als ook samen zijn, samenwerken en wedstrijd betekenen. WA betekent ‘harmonie‘ en ‘vrede‘. KYO è una parola giapponese dai molteplici significati: risonanza, collaborazione, associazione e concorso. WA significa armonia e pace. Questi significati, come anche un’ampia gamma di sentimenti che vanno dal lutto, alla paura fino alla speranza sono stati trasposti in musica da Yagisawa in un brano dallo stile caratteristico del compositore nipponico.
