József Bloch (1862-1922) was an outstanding figure in violin pedagogy in Hungary. With his violin method entitled A heged játék és tan tási módszere (Violin Playing and How to Teach it) he provided sound theoretical knowledge for future teachers. In addition, his books of scales, violin tutors, and finger exercises contributed to the success of teaching in practice. Bloch placed great emphasis on laying a foundation for instrumental technique and raising it to an artistic level. The present volume contains 40 exercises to help gradually develop finger technique step by step by practising stopping, changing strings, and rapid fingering. The pieces also deal specifically with someproblems of left-hand technique.

Ravel's brilliant compositional interpretation of the Pictures at an Exhibition is, to this day, the most famous and independent orchestration of Mussorgsky's masterpiece. When the French composer turned his attention to his Russian colleague's piano cycle in 1922, he was at the height of his mastery and Paris was enraptured by Russian music. Notated with remarkable accuracy in an autograph score, Ravel's orchestration was an audience favorite from the very start. Jean-Francois Monnard, who previously edited the Breitkopf Urtext editions of Bolero, La Valse and Rapsodie espagnole, presents a text in which even the tiniest detail is authentic. The edition not only eliminates many previously undiscovered errors, but also offers a wealth of practical information on the long and multi-faceted performance history of the work, including the metronome markings of great conductors who were connected to the work in a very special manner.Bibliography:Mayer, Stephan: Sonne fur die Seele. The Austro-Hungarian composer Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) was musically precocious: At the suggestion of AntonÃn Dvorák, he receivedpiano lessons at the age of seven, and at the age of ten became a student at the Prague Conservatory. Further piano studies in Vienna, Cologne and Leipzig as well as composition lessons with Max Reger supplemented his education. His Jewish heritage, which defamed his music as “degenerateâ€, and his sympathy for communism, however, cost him his life. In Prague and finally interned in Wülzburg near Weissenburg in Bavaria, he died of tuberculosis. Schulhoff's musical significance lies in the integration of jazz into art music, for example in his oratorio H.M.S. Royal Oak or in his Hot Sonata for alto saxophone and piano. He earned his living as a jazz pianist for a long time. In August 1922 he wrote four short piano pieces, his Rag Music, to which he added four more phrases in November: released as Partita, also known as Jazz-like Partita - with the fashion dances Ragtime, Foxtrott, Shimmy, Boston and - as No. 7 - a tango. From a piano to a string quartet movement, the arrangement presents itself as a delicate and smart, technically not too difficult sweet, suitable as a diversion or addition in a quartet program.
