An absolute classic for strings, this version is in C major to avoid forward extensions for viola and violoncello. There is nothing out of first position except for a simple shift for violoncello and bass in a brief passage. A solo string quartet section gives the work a truly Baroque feel.

This energetic second movement from Bach's famed Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 has been skillfully arranged to be more accessible to the developing string ensemble. Remaining in the key of G major, this piece has been re-scored from the original compound meter of 12/8 to simple 3/4 time, allowing both conductor and players to more easily manage the pulse. All instruments get moving parts with vigorous melodies and countermelodies, while the original solos have been integrated into the sections. An excellent introduction to a classic piece of Baroque repertoire.

Dimitri Stepanowitsch Bortniansky (1751-1825) seems to have composed the majority of his liturgical works and most of his Sacred Concertos in the 1780s and 1790s, before he was appointed Kapellmeister to the court ensemble in St. Petersburg. Heidi Kirmsse has added a German singing text to the five most popular pieces from the complete volume (CV 4.111). The festive Concerto no. 6 Ehre sei Gott in der Hohe is for Christmas, and no. 9 Heut ist der Tag, den Gott, der Herr, gemacht for Easter. No. 15 Lasst uns singen, kommt herbei is in the major key and is a very effective piece. Tchaikovsky edited Bortniansky's sacred works and is said to have particularly admired no. 32 O lass mich, Herr, mein Gott, erkennen mein Ziel. Bortniansky himself probably best liked no. 33 Sag, meine Seele, warum verzagest du? The work was sung at his funeral.*addition to the choral repertoire with works from the Orthodox liturgy/ Eastern Europe*includes the original Church Slavonic text underlaid (in transliteration).*effective solo/tutti alternationsScore available separately - see item CA.411100.

The genesis of Beethoven's 4th symphony came at an extraordinary time for the composer not only regarding productivity: Thus, in 1806 he composed, among other things, the 4th piano concerto, the three Rasumovsky string quartets op. 59, the 32 piano variations in c minor WoO 80, as well as the violin concerto op. 61. The first performance of the B-flat-major symphony occurred in March 1807 at one of the two noteworthy subscription concerts conducted by Beethoven in the Palais Lobkowitz in Vienna. In the course of time, this intellectually-stimulating work- so described by one of the reviewers of the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung - found ever-increasing appeal. Throughout the entire 19th century this symphony ranked with the best-loved and most frequently performed works; its popularity spread to England where the London Philharmonic Society played it at least 25 times in the period between 1813 and 1850.Extant are only a few drafts of the 4th symphony. The autograph served as the main source for the present edition edited by Prof. Bathia Churgin, likewise editor of the 3rd symphony in the new Beethoven Complete Edition. Consulted as reference sources were copies of the score and orchestral parts as well as the original edition of the parts.

This popular piece for solo violin and piano has been skillfully arranged by string pedagogue Doris Gazda. A standard piece in the repertoire, it adapts quite well to the string orchestra. This is an excellent piece for an advancing group.A rondo is a musical form that was commonly used by composers from the classical through the romantic music periods. It was often the form used for the last movement of a sonata, a symphony, a concerto or a piece of chamber music. The rondo form consists of a main theme (part A) that recurs with contrasting sections (parts B, C, D and so on) in between. The contrasting sections can change key and can change from major to minor tonality. A typical form of a rondo might be ABACADABA. It is usually written in triple meter, and is lively and joyful in character. Beethoven used the rondo form quite often, and Fritz Kreisler, the famous violinist and composer, found a Beethoven melody and turned it into this “little rondo,†or rondino, written originally for violin and piano. This arrangement for string orchestra can also be played by a small string ensemble. It should be played with a light style of bowing so as to give it a happy, lilting quality.

This anthology presents organ, harpsichord and piano concertos - the majority not hitherto published in modern editions - by Handel's contemporaries and successors, including works by Felton, Cooke, William Hayes, Arne, Chilcot, Philip Hayes, Hook, Rush, Stanley, Charles Wesley, Crotch, Samuel Wesley and Russell, from among the 200 examples surviving from the period c.1740-c.1815. Among the most versatile genres of the time, it found popularity in pleasure garden, theatre, concert room and the home. The contents of this volume show the form adapting well to the stylistic evolutions of the period from late Baroque via continental gallant styles to a mature Classical style, though retaining a strong native tradition linked with Handelian oratorio in the idiomatic distinction between virtuoso piano concerto and concertos for organ.
