André Jolivet (1905-1974) established his love for composition from a young age. This remained throughout his life, and he held the post of Professor of Composition from 1966-1970 at Paris Conservatoire. Concerto for Bassoon wascomposed in 1954, and remains highly regarded. Jolivet, himself a cellist, wished to explore composition for all instruments, and therefore has a considerable number of works in all fields. The composer's style is also known forits spirituality, and the desire to associate the everyday with the magical, and the human with the universal. Jolivet draws on acoustics and atonality, as heard in his Concerto for Bassoon. The piece requires high, virtuosicskills due to its expansive use of extended techniques. For all advanced bassoonists, Jolivet provides an exciting, alternative piece for the instrument's repertoire.

Despite being very busy with three different Broadway musicals, Gershwin was able to complete the 'Concerto in F' for Piano and Orchestra in November 10, 1925. It was commissioned by the American conductor Walter Damrosch who conducted the premiere in Carnegie Hall later that year featuring the composer as the soloist. The 'Concerto in F' shows considerable development in Gershwin's compositional technique, particularly because he orchestrated the entire work himself. Argentine arranger Martin Jorge transcribed the complete concerto for piano with accompaniment of a Symphonic Wind Orchestra.

The present series of easy piano music for teaching provides pupils in the lower and lower-middle grades with a careful selection of well-known and little-lmown compositions by important masters. Each book has intentionally been kept small in extent, since it is more stimulating for children to change the teaching material frequently. In the course of his brief creative life, Schubert wrote more than 200 dances and waltzes for piano, which he grouped together and published in sets. The technical difficulties, which are sometimes considerable, are greatly reduced by dividing the music up between four hands; a process which has been carried out without necessitating any major alterations to the original versions for piano solo. Ten of the most beautiful waltzes from different opus numbers have been selected for the present book. Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Fall 1974.

Opera in three acts, edited by Alan Curtis. This opera was first performed in Venice in 1666. It may with justice be considered to be the finest opera written between Monteverdi's 'Poppea' and the dramatic works of the mature Purcell. Having in 1983 presided over the first modern revival of 'Il Tito' in Innsbruck, the city of its original commissioning, Alan Curtis has now produced the first complete performing edition to be drawn from available sources.

English Organist and composer Henry Smart was one of a family of accomplished musicians active in the 19th century. During his lifetime, Smart was widely considered to be one of the premiere composers in British history, but that popularity was not sustained in the years since his death. He is best known now for the hymn tune Regent Square which is sung to Angels From the Realms of Glory. This Organ Postlude In C reveals Smart to have been an accomplished composer with an excellent understanding of his instrument and undoubtedly of the musical tastes of his era.

Considered as a whole, Moeran's music has a strong individuality and a very personal flavour. The recipe is the composer's own, and there is none other like it. Yet, though he has amply covered the field of orchestral music, chamber music, concertos, and smaller vocal works, one would not describe Moeran's as a varied talent. He keeps to his centre, which is a purely musical one.

Throne (1988) for Clarinet and Piano was composed on a commission from the Swedish clarinetist Hakon Rosenberg. Structurally it is organized in an arch form. Although it begins in the piano, the work can be considered as one long clarinet solo, where the piano's role is that of extending and mirroring the clarinet, both in register and motif. As such the piano is treated as a monody throughout, until the last warm B Major chord embraces the final notes of the clarinet. On the title page the composer tells us that Throne is Elevation, Unity, Diamonds, Crown, Glory, Velvet, Frailty, Decline, Oblivion, Nothing. In short Throne is and abstract tone-poem on the transitoriness of Life. Poul Ruders 1988.

In the past few years, her creative work, long considered negligible, has finally been escaping from oblivion thanks to the untiring work of the Centre Nadia et Lili Boulanger, directed by Alexandra Laederich.

Musicologist and writer Samuel Charters (1929--2015) considered blues lyrics a profound cultural expression that could connect all people who love poetry. A pioneer in the exploration of world music, Charters conducted research that brought obscure musicians of the American South and Appalachia into the mainstream. In this landmark volume, the noted blues historian and folklorist presents a rich exploration of blues songs as folk poetry, quoting lyrics by such legends as Son House and Lightnin' Hopkins at length to reveal the depth of feeling and complex literary forms at work within a unique art form.

There can hardly have been a period in the past which has contemplated itself so exhaustively in the presentation of its own history as the 20th Century. This volume does not aim to present yet another account of the history of music in the 20th Century, but rather to use those accounts already in existence to develop an understanding of the principles of music history and to attempt to identify the principles of New Music. The lack of clarity in concepts and the contradictions inherent in the historian's task make this a plea for New Music to be considered as a plural category, following an attempt to describe the beginnings of New Music through contrasting two approaches (Ives and Webern).

Padre Martini was musical director in Bologna and a respected teacher of composition with whom studied Johann Christian Bach among others. Martini's compositions, between baroque and rococo as to style, are considered to be excellent works of Italian music of that time. The violoncello is treated by Martini as concertante instrument. The viola part can also be played by a third violin.

The roller coaster of opinions - worthless, absolutely unplayable (claims Nikolaj Rubinstein, basically Tchaikovsky's desired pianist for his Concerto in B flat minor); brilliant, magnificent (Hans von Bulow, then first performer and dedicatee of the work) - demonstrates the work's initially ambivalent reception. Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.1 is one of the most powerful and popular compositions of the classical music repertoire altogether; and it is also quite unconventional and runs counter to the norms of the time. Though it may seem strange to us today, let us recall that during his lifetime, Tchaikovsky was regarded disputable abroad (and especially in Germany), was considered an ultra-modern Russian composer, and was even accused of being a musical nihilist and primitivist. But one glance at the score of the piano concerto suffices to reveal its truly amazing character ...
