The Butterfly that Stamped is a story from the anthology Just So Stories, written by Rudyard Kipling for his daughter who suffered constant bad health. The book inspired composer Maxim Aulio to compose this work which is in a French impressionistic style. The piece opens with a beautiful palace surrounded by the impressive gardens of King Solomon. It is in these gardens that the baritone saxophone makes its appearance representing King Solomon himself, the flute representing the butterfly couple, the clarinet representing Queen Balkis and the trumpet the djin.

The Butterfly that Stamped - Der Schmetterling, der aufstampfte“ - ist eine von zwölf Erzählungen aus dem Band Just So Stories, den Rudyard Kipling, der berühmte Autor des Dschungelbuchs, Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts für seine kranke Tochter schrieb. Der französische Komponist Maxime Aulio ließ sich von dieser bezaubernden Geschichte zu einer Komposition im Stil des französischen Impressionismus inspirieren. Vor der wundervoll orchestrierten musikalischen Kulisse des Palastes und der Gärten König Salomons treten das Baritonsaxophon als König Salomon, die Flöten als Schmetterlingspärchen, eine Klarinette als Königin Balkis und die Trompeten als Dschinnsauf. Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) est l’un des plus célèbres écrivains de langue anglaise. Né Bombay en Inde, ce journaliste, poète et romancier reçoit le prix Nobel de littérature en 1907. On lui doit notamment les célèbres ouvrages Le Livre de la Jungle (1894), Histoires comme ça (1902) et Kim (1901), entre autres. Rudyard Kipling a sillonné le monde, glanant de-ci de-l des mots et des merveilles raconter aux petits et aux grands. Aujourd’hui encore ses Histoires comme ça enchantent par leur drôlerie et leur poésie ; de délicieux récits d’animaux entre l’Inde et l’Afrique initialement écrits pour sa fille, Joséphine, qui mourut en 1899 des suites d’unegrippe.Le Papillon qui tapait du pied est un des douze contes du recueil Histoires comme ça. Maxime Aulio s’en est inspiré pour créer une œuvre qui s’inscrit dans la tradition de l’impressionnisme musical français. Le saxophone baryton solo incarne le Roi Salomon, fils de David ; les fl tes jouent le couple de papillons ; une clarinette est la Reine Balkis - la Sage Balkis de Saba - tandis que les trompettes et les cornets représentent les Djinns. Les personnages évoluent dans un décor orchestral merveilleux l’image des jardins et du palais du Roi Salomon. / The Butterfly That Stamped (Le Papillon qui tapait du pied) est une œuvre de commande pour la Fédération Musicale d’Auvergne (France) avec le soutien du Conseil Régional d’Auvergne, l’occasion du 10e anniversaire de l’Orchestre Régional d’Harmonie École. L’œuvre a été donnée en création le 30 avril 2006 au Thé tre Municipal d’Aurillac. L’Orchestre Régional d’Harmonie École d’Auvergne était placé sous la direction de Claude Kesmaecker, avec en soliste, Alexandre Doisy, saxophone baryton.

Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire.The composer writes: The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing*, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine andastrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life.An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle. *in full Wu zhong liu xing zhi chi or the five types of chi dominating at different times

L’idea di comporre questo brano è venuta a Philip Sparke leggendo un articolo sulla filosofi a cinese che si basa su cicli di cinque elementi, fasi e stadi di cambiamento. A Sparke interessavano in particolare il flusso dei sentimenti come la meditazione, il lutto, la paura, la rabbia e la gioia. A partire da questi elementi ha composto un impressionante “viaggio” musicale suddiviso in cinque sezioni, tematicamente intrecciate tra loro, quasi a voler formare un cerchio.

The Geuzen Medal is an annual award given to people or organizations who have found unique ways to further democracy in the world and help eliminate dictatorships, racism, and discrimination. The original Geuzen fought against Spanish imperialism in Holland during the16th century. During the Second World War a group resisting the Nazis also named themselves De Geuzen. Jan de Haan incorporates Psalm 43, sung by a group of condemned prisoners shortly before their execution in 1943, into Geuzen Medal Fanfare, composed for the 25th bestowal of this special award.

Ieder jaar weer wordt ze weer uitgereikt: de Geuzenpenning. Dit is aan een persoon of organisatie die zich op bijzondere wijze inzet voor de democratie en tegen dictatuur, racisme en discriminatie. In de zestiende eeuw streden deGeuzen tegen de Spaanse bezetting. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog was er eveneens een verzetsgroep die zich zo noemde. Een deel van hen werd in 1943 veroordeeld tot de doodstraf. Vlak voor de voltrekking van het vonnis zetten zij psalm43 in. Precies deze psalm verwerkte Jan de Haan in zijn openingswerk Geuzen Medal Fanfare. Hij schreef het ter gelegenheid van de vijfentwintigste uitreiking.

Die ursprünglichen Geuzen kämpften gegen spanische Besatzung in Holland im 16. Jahrhundert; im Zweiten Weltkrieg nannte sich eine Widerstandsgruppe gegen die Deutschen ebenfalls De Geuzen. Den Psalm 43, den eine Gruppe von Verurteilten 1943 kurz vor ihrer Hinrichtung anstimmte, verarbeitete Jan de Haan in seinem Eröffnungswerk De Geuzen Medal Fanfare, das er zur 25. Verleihung dieses besonderen Ordens schrieb.

La Médaille des Gueux décernée par la Geuzen Resistance Foundation 1940-1945, met l’honneur une personne ou une organisation méritante, s’étant engagée dans la lutte pour la démocratie. Le nom de la fondation tire son origine de la révolte des Gueux, mouvement patriotique néerlandais. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, des résistants reprirent le nom des Gueux. Lorsque quinze d’entre eux tombèrent aux mains des occupants allemands, ils entamèrent le Psaume 43. L’arrangement de Jan de Haan conserve l’authenticité de la mélodie originale.

Ogni anno la “Geuzen Medal”, viene conferita dalla Fondazione olandese “Geuzen Resistance 1940-1945 Foundation” quale tributo ad individui o istituzioni che si siano prodigate per la democrazia o contro le dittature, le discriminazioni ed il razzismo. Nel corso della seconda guerra mondiale, un gruppo di resistenti riprese il nome di “Geuzen”: 15 membri caddero prigionieri e al momento della loro fucilazione cantarono il Salmo 43.

The Geuzen Medal is an annual award given to people or organizations who have found unique ways to further democracy in the world and help eliminate dictatorships, racism, and discrimination. The original Geuzen fought against Spanish imperialism in Holland during the16th century. During the Second World War a group resisting the Nazis also named themselves De Geuzen. Jan de Haan incorporates Psalm 43, sung by a group of condemned prisoners shortly before their execution in 1943, into Geuzen Medal Fanfare, composed for the 25th bestowal of this special award.

Ieder jaar weer wordt ze weer uitgereikt: de Geuzenpenning. Dit is aan een persoon of organisatie die zich op bijzondere wijze inzet voor de democratie en tegen dictatuur, racisme en discriminatie. In de zestiende eeuw streden deGeuzen tegen de Spaanse bezetting. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog was er eveneens een verzetsgroep die zich zo noemde. Een deel van hen werd in 1943 veroordeeld tot de doodstraf. Vlak voor de voltrekking van het vonnis zetten zij psalm43 in. Precies deze psalm verwerkte Jan de Haan in zijn openingswerk Geuzen Medal Fanfare. Hij schreef het ter gelegenheid van de vijfentwintigste uitreiking.

Der Geuzenpenning (Geuzen Medal) wird jährlich an Menschen oder Organisataionen verliehen, die sich auf besondere Weise für die Demokratie und gegen Diktatur, Rassismus und Diskriminierung eingesetzt haben. Die ursprünglichen Geuzen kämpften gegen spanische Besatzung in Holland im 16. Jahrhundert; im Zweiten Weltkrieg nannte sich eine Widerstandsgruppe gegen die Deutschen ebenfalls De Geuzen. Den Psalm 43, den eine Gruppe von Verurteilten 1943 kurz vor ihrer Hinrichtung anstimmte, verarbeitete Jan de Haan in seinem Eröffnungswerk De Geuzen Medal Fanfare, das er zur 25. Verleihung dieses besonderen Ordens schrieb.

La Médaille des Gueux décernée par la Geuzen Resistance Foundation 1940-1945, met l’honneur une personne ou une organisation méritante, s’étant engagée dans la lutte pour la démocratie. Le nom de la fondation tire son origine de la révolte des Gueux, mouvement patriotique néerlandais. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, des résistants reprirent le nom des Gueux. Lorsque quinze d’entre eux tombèrent aux mains des occupants allemands, ils entamèrent le Psaume 43. L’arrangement de Jan de Haan conserve l’authenticité de la mélodie originale.

Ogni anno la “Geuzen Medal”, viene conferita dalla Fondazione olandese “Geuzen Resistance 1940-1945 Foundation” quale tributo ad individui o istituzioni che si siano prodigate per la democrazia o contro le dittature, le discriminazioni ed il razzismo. Nel corso della seconda guerra mondiale, un gruppo di resistenti riprese il nome di “Geuzen”: 15 membri caddero prigionieri e al momento della loro fucilazione cantarono il Salmo 43.

Il percorso didattico si sviluppa attraverso scale e arpeggi, esercizi tecnici volti allo studio del legato e dello staccato, studi espressivi mirati alla padronanza del clarinetto mediante la ricerca di un suono fermo e pulito e dell'intonazione, esercizi di tecnica per aumentare la fluidita nell'articolazione delle dita. Il metodo e completato da una selezione di passi orchestrali e soli, disposti in difficolta crescente e commisurata al livello raggiunto dallo studente; vengono inoltre proposti i principali brani del repertorio solistico, cameristico e d'insieme per clarinetto. Il volume e corredato di un CD audio contenente le basi registrate e le esecuzioni al clarinetto dei brani contenuti.
