Hungarian composer, pianist and ethnomusicologist Béla Bartók (1881-1945) originally completed the cycle of 85 short piano pieces FOR CHILDREN in 1909. Each piece was based on a folk tune, with the first 42 being Hungarian, and the remaining 43 being Slovakian. Famed Hungarian violinist Joseph Szigeti (1892-1973) took six of the Hungarian folk tunes and transcribed them for violin and piano. As Bartók later removed and revised some of the songs in the collection, the following numbers included are the original numbers from the 1909 collection: No. 28 - Parlando, No. 18 - Andante con moto, No. 42 - Allegro vivace, No. 33 - Andante sostenuto, No. 6 - Allegro, No. 13 - Andante, No. 38 - Poco vivace. In addition to the original, more difficult violin part he transcribed originally, Szigeti also wrote a simplified version where only the first to fourth positions are used. Both violin versions are included in this edition.

Reflections on an Old Japanese Folk Song opens with two contrasting statements of the melody - first sparsely presented by the woodwinds and then in a harmonized version played by the full band. This is followed by a lively section based on pentatonic melodies that characterize the folk tune. The following slower variation first centers around a plaintive English horn melody made up of sections of the original tune, and later presents the opening phrases of â??Suiryo-Bushiâ? against an intensely florid accompaniment. The final section is in the form of a scherzo that eventually forms the accompaniment to a final presentation of the folk tune. Duration: 8:30.

“Slane,” an Irish folk song that appears towards the end of Prelude on an Irish Folk Tune, is a hymn tune version of the much older folk melody “The Banks of the Bann.” In this composition, fragments of this melody are introduced, hinting at what is to come later in the piece, but another folk-like tune is predominant. This theme later acts as a descant to “Slane” when it finally appears. Add a little Sparke sparkle to any concert with this lovely interlude. Duration: 4:00.

The music Herbert Howells has tended to be unjustly neglected but his post-war output of orchestral and chamber works is currently enjoying a period of re-eveluation. This Herbert Howells society edition of six pieces brings to light yet another aspect of his work, namely his Piano music. Even though he was an accomplished pianist himself, music for Piano did not figure highly in his output. This volume contains some charming character pieces in the form of six Sarum Sketches, two slow dances based on tunes from John Playford's The Dancing Master, an extrovert piece based on a folk tune, a minuet composed as a birthday present for John Ireland, a brief vignette and an exquisite miniature. Of the six pieces in this volume, three appear in print for the first time.

The Irish folk tune Slane (the melody used in the hymn Be Thou My Vision) forms the foundation for this melodically expansive and inspired work for concert band. A flowing exploration of the melody in variation inspires the listener with its bold and thrilling progression. The piece remains within reach of a solid grade 3 band but gives the impression of a higher level of composition. A rich variety of style and orchestration make this a good choice for festival use as well as concert performance, as well as a great opportunity to study the rich cultural heritage of Ireland. You'll be glad you programmed Variants on an Irish Folk Tune by Timothy Johnson.
