The third movement of Opus 34 (Three Festival Choruses), which Gustav Holst penned in 1916, was originally scored for chorus with piano, orchestra, or military band. The easily recognized melody is a nineteenth century Welsh ballad, known to most as the hymn tune St. Denio, set to the words of English poet, Clifford Bax. In 3/4, this characteristically delightful Holst theme has been freely arranged to incorporate elements of his original score with additional material included to heighten musical interest for contemporary concert bands and audiences alike. As the title implies, chimes are an integral part of this arrangement; however, there are alternate options provided in the program notes if a suitable instrument is unavailable. This musical setting is complete with a variety of teaching and performance opportunities and a perfect fit for beginning concert bands. (2:00).

Part of the British folk revival of the early 20th century, Gustav Holst's (1874-1934) Somerset Rhapsody consists of his interpretations of three English folk tunes from the Somerset region: The Sheep-Shearing Song, High Germany, and True Love's Farewell. Holst dedicated this piece, his first major critical success, to Cecil Sharp, a chronicler of English folk music who collected the songs that Holst adapted. Holst intended the cycle to tell a story of a young couple whose relationship is interrupted by war. Somerset Rhapsody premiered in London in April 1910. A century ago James Causley Windram, then band director of the 5th Northumberland Fusiliers and, later, the Coldstream Guards, asked Gustav Holst if he could transcribe some of the composer's Hymns from the Rig Veda for military band.Always a band advocate,Holst readily agreed. The Evening-Watch was written in 1925, when Holst lived in Thaxted, England
having had to temporarily leave his teaching duties because of overwork and illness. This setting of Henry Vaughan's ‘Dialogue between the Body and the Soul' was too
austere for listeners of its day and it remained out of print for thirty years, until 1965. Its mood of calm strength and passionate resignation sounds as if it belongs to the 1960's.


This beautiful arrangement for 8-part trombone choir by Ronald Baron seems altogether appropriate given the instrument's vocal character, its frequent use for music at funerals and Holst's other musical passion; his short career as a trombonist.

The 4 minute piece is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.
