Michael Haydn composed three of his masses in honor of the holy archangels - St Michael, St Gabriel, and the Raphaelismesse in honor of St Raphael now published. By avoiding the use of vocal soloists, it is one of the genre of Missa in pieno. Four trumpets and two ad lib oboe parts added later by the composer give the work a festive sound in the baroque tradition. At the same time, elements of the 'sensitive style' feature too. The Gloria and Credo exist in two settings, a short version with polytextual passages and a longer version arranged by Haydn himself. The Carus edition, based on authentic performance material in St. Peter's Monastery in Salzburg, contains both versions, with the longer version published here for the first time.

Herbert Howells (1892-1983) was an English composer and teacher, who is perhaps best known for his choral music in the Anglican tradition.
A Near Minuet, however, was written for Clarinet and Piano, and is one of Howells' most charming small-scale works. It was composed in 1946, while Howells was Director of Music at St Paul's Girls' School, for one of his pupils there.

Of the 11 surviving settings of the Mass by Charpentier, the present work, ,Messe de Minuit', ist without doubt one of the most popular. The work belongs to the tradition of the parody-Mass: the composer adapted 10 noels - whose titles are given in the autograph - to the text of the Ordinary. The resulting music is fresh, charming and jubilant. The single extant source is book 66 of the 25th volume of Charpentier's autograph ,Meslanges' which was sold to the Bibliotheque Royale (now Bibliotheque Nationale) Paris. The manuscript is extremely clear. All editorial additions are placed in square brackets.(Jean-Paul Montagnier) (Jean-Paul Montagnier) The present edition is based on the manuscript from the Bibliotheque Nationale de France (Paris). It it the oldest known source of the work. The very few errors have been corrected.

â??I already wrote the Concerto for Guitar, Tympani and Strings for the outstanding Polish guitarist Lukasz Kuropaczewski. The 'Triptych' for guitar solo is my second work for this interpreter. The individual titles of the 'Triptych' movements â?? Fantasia, Aria and Impromptu furioso â?? refer to the characters of the individual movements. I completed 'Triptych' for guitar solo in December 2014. The piece is permeated by double contrasts: in terms of harmony, the guitar's own mood and sound world are contrasted with my harmonic thinking. In terms of technique, on the other hand, performance gestures of the Flamenco tradition are contrasted with those of the practice of classical guitar playing. The dialogue between different harmonic and historical levels can thus be discovered through a complex, clearly demarcated discourse. The performance duration of the work is about 15 minutes.â? (Krzysztof Meyer).

This is an ancient Welsh air that was first published in Relics of the Welsh Bards in 1794. Dafydd (David) Owain was a famous Welsh bard who lived on a farm called Gareg Wen (The White Rock) in Eifionydd, Carnarnvonshire, North Wales. Tradition has it that on his deathbed he called for his harp and composed this lovely melody, requesting that it be played at his funeral. Accordingly, it was later played at the parish church of Ynys-Cynhaiarn. Lyrics were later added by Ceiriog Hughes, which describe the melody's inspiration. This version for fanfare band retains all the beauty and simplicity of the original.

At less than 20 years of age, the youngest son of the Leipzig cantor of St. Thomas, Johann Sebastian Bach, withdrew from the Lutheran musical tradition of his family: Johann Christian Bach went to Italy, converted to Catholicism there and composed mainly Latin church music between 1757 and 1760. His great successes with operas for Turin, Milan and Naples from 1761 onwards led him all the way to London. Bach's church music comprises a number of vespers compositions, some of them large-scale, including this Magnificat a 4 (1760) for soloists, choir and orchestra. The very diversified work gets its additional attraction from distinctively led oboes and horns.
