Brahms, Reger and the consequences Adolph Busch had already emigrated to the United States when he wrote the A-Major Clarinet Sonata . Shortly thereafter he revised the work once again until it was completed in its final form in spring 1941. Busch, a brilliant and sought-after solo violinist of the 1920s and 30s, concertized regularly in England and had become friends there with the clarinetist Reginald Kells, to whom he also dedicated the piece in three movements. Demanding in its musical idiom and no doubt inspired by the expressive playing of his friend, the sonata evidences a strong proximity to the works of Brahms and Reger. A long and demanding piece, edited with great care - a valuable addition to the repertoire for A clarinet. (Luigi Magistrelli, The Clarinet).

Responding to demand from clarinetists, Schocker created this adaptation of his best-loved work, customizing it for the clarinet’s richness of contrasting registers. Composed as a recital piece for his own performances as a flutist, Gary Schocker’s Regrets and Resolutions has been a standard in that instrument’s repertoire for over 30 years. Inspired by an 80-year-old friend’s birthday, the composer has written: “I wrote the Regrets imagining what it might be like to look back over 80 years. ‘What if I’d made different choices?’ ‘What if ...?’ The Resolutions is a forward-thinking movement, very energetic and positive, except for a brief looking-back, questioning (the 1st movement is recapped and grows), after which the music plunges back into the rhythmic finale.â€.

This edition is enriched with a historical introduction in French and English by notable clarinettist Pierre Génisson. “[...] this piece is, without a doubt, one of the sweetest I have ever written.†As this letter that Claude Debussy wrote to Durand, his publisher, indicates, the composer held his Rhapsodie for clarinet and piano in very high regard. In 1909, when Gabriel Fauré, then director of the Paris Conservatoire, commissioned the piece, Debussy had never before written for clarinet. He dedicated it to P. Mimart, “as a token of my regard.†After the unanimous recognition of the high quality of this solo, written for competition, Mimart premiered it in public on 16 January 1911 at the Salle Gaveau in Paris. Two years later, Debussy would choose to expand it further, writing a version accompanied by orchestra with a greatly expanded palette of colors. As its name suggests, it is freeform, and emanates a great poetry. The introduction, “Rêveusement lent,†is an evocation of the dawn. This gives way to a scene of nature's awakening, which never ceases to amaze us with its transformations. At times calm and lyrical, it sometimes becomes mischievous, vindictive or even joyous, especially during the scherzando passages. In a heightened impressionist style, Debussy gives free rein to his imagination, demanding tremendous speed and precision from the clarinettist.

Zoltán Kocsis was not just a phenomenal pianist. He is mourned also as a musical polymath, whose genius embraced the activities of a composer, conductor, editor, and not least instrumentalist and arranger. In the last capacity, he added some 150 works to the symphonic, chamber, song and piano repertoires. He gladly adapted music of the turn of the 20th century, as appears from his transcriptions of Richard Strauss, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Enescu, and above all Debussy. (Many of these are distributed by Editio Musica Budapest.) This arrangement pinpoints superbly the sensitive, almost ingratiating tunefulness of the Waltz, adding to the clarinetist's repertoire a piece that plays well and is rewarding to perform.

Joshua and Stefanie Gardner have arranged Johannes Brahms' first violin sonata, op. 78 for clarinet and piano. As much as possible the work is unchanged from the original violin part, though there are several sections notated with an optional 8vb part when the violin's range becomes prohibitively high. For the clarinetist who's always wanted more Brahms to play, this arrangement is an excellent choice.

“Jeanine Rueff (1922-1999) was a French composer and music educator. Her Concertino for Clarinet and orchestral or Piano accompaniment was first published in 1950 and remains a popular, alternative piece in the advanced clarinetist's performance repertoire. Rueff wrote extensively for the Saxophone and Clarinet and her compositions are often used as required contest solos. Concertino is fast and contains complex rhythms. Other appealing musical features include chromaticism, triplet motifs and the exploitation of the entire range of the Clarinet. Rueff's Concertino provides a challenging yet riveting piece for advanced clarinetists.â€.

This work, which was written shortly after the Trumpet Sonata and the Five Pieces For Piano, was first performed by Georgina Dobree and the composer at the 1957 Darmstadt Festival. The score was subsequently lost, but was rediscovered by Kevin Corner in 1983. 'This is a dramatic, emphatic and at times extravagant piece. The first movement is a Moderato reaching through wide-flung clarinet lines and keen piano gestures to a great climax near the end. Then comes a quick movement, a kind of demonic scherzo, including a cadenza for the clarinettist. The finale is an Adagio that gradually achieves a sort of simplicity, though not before exceedingly testing times for both players. Duration c. 25mins.

G.F.Handel's (1685-1759) Sonata in B flat is well-known to the Oboe repertoire. Therefore, when French clarinetist, Emile Stievenard arranged the popular piece for the Clarinet, it was very well-received. The Sonata in B flat is made up of four movements; Adagio, Allegro, Adagio and Allegro. Handel's Sonata in B flat was first published in 1707-10 for Oboe. Stievenard's editions ensure that the Clarinet part contains the articulation, performance directions, phrasing and breath marks necessary to the instrument. For all clarinetists, this arrangement of the popular Sonata in B flat is essential..
