Between 1905 and 1934, Gustav Holst was Director of Music at St Paul’s Girls School in Brook Green, London. This noble concert march was commissioned by the Musikverein Heek, Germany, for its 125th anniversary. In German mythology, Donar is the God of Thunder, and in the area around Heek, ‘Thunder Mountain’ is a household name. The work begins with a stately opening, followed by a beautiful trio melody with rhythmical and energetic sections. This is a march that features and showcases a range of musical aspects. It is perfect as an opener or to create variety during a concert.Deze nobele concertmars werd geschreven in opdracht van de Duitse Musikverein Heek, ter gelegenheid van het 125-jarig bestaan van deze vereniging in 2017. De première vond onder leiding van de componist op 2 september plaats in de gemeente Heek. Donar is de dondergod uit de Germaanse mythologie en er is een specifieke reden voor de keuze van deze naam: in de regio rond Heek is de ‘Donderberg’ een begrip, zodat deze titel zeer toepasselijk is. The first performance of the opera Sophie's Choice was given at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London on December 7, 2002, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle and directed by Trevor Nunn. The Concert Suite from Sophie's Choice was written for the Peabody Institute. The first performance was given by the Peabody Symphony Orchestra with mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Healy, conducted by Hajime Teri Murai, at the Peabody Institute, Baltimore on April 24, 2004. The suite is a direct transcription by the composer from the orchestral music of the opera. The mezzo-soprano aria may be omitted.

The Eastman Wind Ensemble is America's leading wind ensemble. Frederick Fennell first formulated the general concept of the wind ensemble at Eastman nearly 65 years ago. Under his leadership the group became known as the pioneering force in the wind ensemble movement in the United States and abroad. A. Clyde Roller served as conductor between 1962 and 1964, continuing the tradition established by Fennell. Donald Hunsberger became conductor in 1965 and led the ensemble for 37 years to international prominence. The ensemble's current director, Mark Davis Scatterday, was introduced as the fourth conductor of this prestigious group during the EWE's 50th anniversary celebration on February 8, 2002. Since its founding, the EWE has been the leader in elevating the wind repertory through recordings. Fennell's Mercury Recordings albums of the 1950s and early '60s are notable for their pioneering use of binaural, stereo, and 35mm recording techniques. These Living Presence recordings focused on standard band literature by the most respected classical composers -- heard for the first time in the newly balanced one-per-part instrumentation. They also centered on major repertory not found on traditional band programs, such as Mozart's Serenade in B-flat (the Gran Partita), Messiaen's Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum, and Stravinsky's Symphonies of Wind Instruments. Under Hunsberger, the EWE continued its progressive stance in recording techniques with participation in quadraphonic and digital recording. Since its founding, the ensemble has premiered more than 200 new works. The EWE and Mark Scatterday have continued this rich recording tradition with several CDs starting in 2005 with Danzante (featuring trumpet virtuosi James Thompson) on Summit Records. Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire.The composer writes: The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing*, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine andastrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life.An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. Chaque mouvement s’ouvre partir des éléments musicaux qui parachèvent le mouvement précédent, tandis que L’idea di comporre questo brano è venuta a Philip Sparke leggendo un articolo sulla filosofi a cinese che si basa su cicli di cinque elementi, fasi e stadi di cambiamento. A Sparke interessavano in particolare il flusso dei sentimenti come la meditazione, il lutto, la paura, la rabbia e la gioia. A partire da questi elementi ha composto un impressionante “viaggio†musicale suddiviso in cinque sezioni, tematicamente intrecciate tra loro, quasi a voler formare un cerchio.

A Sevenoaks Suite was commissioned by the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge Concert Band from Kent in the south-east of England. The suite describes 3 famous landmarks in the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge area: ‘Knole Park’, situated to the south-east of Sevenoaks. ‘The Chapel - Tonbridge School’: This movement centres around a hymn-like chorale, depicting the years of worship that have taken place within the chapel, and ‘The Vine Bandstand’ suggesting the type of music often played in bandstands. It is in march form, but is not actually a march throughout, veering off into other styles before ending emphatically.A Sevenoaks Suite werd geschreven in opdracht van de Sevenoaks and Tonbridge Concert Band uit Kent, in het zuidoosten van Engeland. De suite beschrijft drie beroemde landschapselementen en bouwwerken in de buurt van Sevenoaks en Tonbridge: als eerste ‘Knole Park’, dat ten zuidoosten van Sevenoaks ligt. The famous Barcarolle from Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann opens the fourth act of the opera, which takes place in Venice. For this reason Offenbach chose a barcarolle - a Venetian gondolier song with its characteristic swaying rhythm. Wil van der Beek’s arrangement gives this romantic song an alternative, lighter beginning, making it suitable for almost any wind orchestra. Jacques Offenbach (1819 - 1880) was een Franse componist van Duitse afkomst. Hij geldt in het algemeen als een van de belangrijkste scheppers van de operette, een term, die hijzelf nooit gebruikte, hij sprak liever van opéra bouffeof opéra comique. Hier mogen zijn alom bekende werken genoemd worden zoals “Orphée aux enfersâ€, “La belle Hélèneâ€, “Barbe-bleue†en “La vie Parisienneâ€.Offenbach schreef slechts één opera, die nu nog steeds repertoire houdt: “LesContes d’Hoffmannâ€, zijn zwanenzang, die bij zijn overlijden nog niet geheel af was. Ernest Guiraud voltooide dit werk en was zo handig om uit een eerdere compositie van Offenbach (“Les fées du Rhin†uit 1863) een lied te nemenen dit als barcarolle toe te voegen. Grote klassieke meesters namen graag barcarolles op in hun opera’s (Weber, Rossini, Donizetti,Verdi), maar als zelfstandige compositie is de barcarolle ook erg geliefd (Mendelssohn, Tschaikowsky, Bartok, Fauré, Glazoenov, Villa-Lobos, Gershwin, Bernstein bijv.).Die berühmte Barcarolle aus der Oper Hoffmanns Erzählungen von Jacques Offenbach eröffnet den vierten Akt der Oper, der in Venedig spielt. Daher wählte Offenbach eine Barcarole - ein venezianisches Gondellied mit seinem charakteristischen wiegenden Rhythmus. Mit einem alternativen, leichteren Beginn macht Wil van der Beeks Bearbeitung das romantische Lied fast jedem Blasorchester zugänglich. In his comic opera Banditenstreiche, Suppé uses all the qualities that have made him so well-loved by a wide audience. The appealing music is brimming with unexpected ideas and written in a light and fluent style. The arrangement of the overture contains many highlights from this opera and makes a superb light item for any concert. Franz von Suppé (1819-1895) behoort tot de belangrijkste vertegenwoordigers van de klassieke Weense operette. In de komische opera Banditenstreiche haalt Suppé alle kwaliteiten uit de kast die hem zo geliefd maakten bij hetgrote publiek: de aanstekelijke muziek is doorspekt met onverwachte invallen en in een lichte en vloeiende stijl geschreven. Er valt veel te genieten met elegante aria’s en ensembles, onvervalste Weense walsen en aantrekkelijke balletmuziek.De ouverture bevat enkele hoogtepunten uit deze opera, die vaak ten onrechte een operette wordt genoemd.Franz von Suppé prägte nachhaltig die klassische Wiener Operette. Franz von Suppé fut avec Johann Strauss etKarl Millöcker un des plus éminents représentants de l’ ge d’or de l’opérette classique viennoise.Dans sa version originale, l’opéra-comique Banditenstreiche (1867, Les joyeux bandits) était une œuvre courte en un acte, mais la version de Suppé fut modifiée deux reprises, en 1940 et 1955. D’une composition sans grande prétention, elle devint alors une œuvre d’envergure. En puisant dans le répertoire existant de Suppé, les « arrangeurs » réunirent six pièces originales pour en faire une partition solide et complète. Le résultat final est parfaitement équilibré.Banditenstreiche rassemble tous les traits caractéristiques de Suppé qui ont conquis un large public : une musique originale foisonnant d’idées inattendues ; un style fluide et léger. On y trouve des airs et des passages d’ensemble élégants, quelques authentiques valses viennoises et de belles pages de musique de scène. L’ouverture constitue une synthèse des meilleurs moments de l’opéra, très souvent qualifié tort, d’opérette.

The Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten-Innsbruck (Austria) invited Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost to write a work to mark the bicentenary of the Tyrolean fight for freedom, which was settled in 1809. Various musical elements reflect this historical event. First, a hymn-like section rings out, based on melodic fragments from the ‘Tiroler Landeshymne’ (by Leopold Knebelsberger), which intertwine in a counterpoint-like arrangement. The second passage is more bellicose in character, and mirrors the fight of the Tyroleans - under the inspiring leadership of freedom fighter Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) - against Bavarian, French and Italian troops. Next, a broad, chorale-style melodyappears again: here, the imposing beauty of nature in Tyrol, and the amiable, lively temperament of the people who live in this mountainous region, are glorified.This is neither a programmatic work around an historical reconstruction, nor a politically inspired work: it is a combination of factual and cultural components, with an artistic and sonorous character. The use of the flugelhorn in particular gives Tirol Terra Fortis its ‘couleur locale’: for this beautiful instrument can invariably be found in the Austrian wind band. The commissioning music society had therefore specifically asked the composer to incorporate the instrument in this work. Plusieurs éléments musicaux reflètent cet événement historique travers un climat joliment évolutif. L’orchestre énonce un thème hymnique basé sur des fragments mélodiques de l’hymne officiel du Land du Tyrol (ou Hymne d’Andreas Hofer composé par Leopold Knebelsberger) qui se mélangent et se confondent dans un arrangement en forme de contrepoint. Le dessin belliqueux du second mouvement rappelle la lutte des Tyroliens contre les troupesbavaroises, françaises et italiennes, l’instigation du combattant de la liberté Andreas Hofer (1767-1810). Enfin, on retrouve une mélodie de style choral qui évoque avec ferveur l’imposante beauté des paysages du Tyrol, et transmet la chaleur et le caractère jovial des habitants de cette région montagneuse. Tirol Terra Fortis n’est ni une reconstruction historique en musique (autrement dit, une œuvre programme), ni une œuvre politique. Son contenu repose sur une combinaison d’éléments factuels et culturels qui s’expriment travers une trame artistique très expressive. Le bugle a su conserver la fidélité des Orchestres d’Harmonie autrichiens. Intégré dans la texture orchestrale de cette œuvre de commande la demande expresse de la formation dédicataire, le bugle donne une couleur locale la composition et enrichit la large gamme des couleurs sonores de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie.
