A short and lyrical work for flute solo
Israeli pianist Tal Weissman was born in Haifa in 1972, and began his musical training at age four. While a youth, he performed as a soloist with most of the orchestras in Israel, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Israel Chamber Orchestra. He was awarded an Outstanding Israeli Competitor at the Arthur Rubenstein Competition in 1992, and has won prizes in international piano competitions in Europe.
In 1995, Weissman was accepted for piano studies with the internationally renowned pianist and pedagogue Maria Curcio Diamand in London. During this period of study in London, he was awarded many prizes and performed in most of the major concert venues in England. In 1999, he made a concert tour of the United States.
Tal Weissman returned to Israel in 2004, where he teaches piano privately and continues to perform both in Israel and abroad. His compositions for piano and other instruments express the human sprit as it faces the challenges of the world.
The Sonatina for Flute Solo is dedicated to Israeli flutist Eyal Ein-Habar.

SYRINX, L. 129/CD 137 by Claude Debussy (1862-1918) is among the most famous works for solo flute and is considered to be an indispensable part of the flutist's repertoire. The first solo flute work of any significance since C.P.E. Bach's SONATA in A minor, written over 150 years prior, SYRINX is also credited with reinvigorating the flute as a solo instrument, a trend that continues still. Written as part of the incidental music to Gabriel Mourey's play PSYCHÉ, the short work was originally entitled FLÛTE DE PAN, and it is thought that it was intended to be played off-stage by the dedicatee, famous French flutist Louis Fleury. ”Small Suite for Flute and Piano is a piece written for the Paris Conservatoire contest by Pierre Petit. Really melodious, it lasts eight minutes and is divided into three distinct movements. The first part, ?Gai et allant? is quite fast and has to be played joyfully. It uses the whole range of the instrument with some really high notes and includes a Cadenza. The second part, ?Lent et très chanté?, is slower, slightly lower in range and really melodious. It is quite short compared to the other parts. The third and final movement has the same kind of range as the first one. Fast, it features a part to be played at Marzuka tempo and one to be played at the same tempo than the beginning. The piece ends on a really high trill. Small Suite is really enjoyable to play and to listen to. It however requires some strong skills in terms of technique and sonority that would be acquired by advanced players: the difficulty is therefore rated at 7.“.
