Known internationally for superior flute editions, Robert Stallman continues his considerable expansion of the flute repertoire with re-creations, or “new†works for flute by Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, Chopin, Dvořák, and other great composers.Conceived originally as a work for solo piano, this arrangement of Dvořák’s Suite in A Major for flute and piano is based on both the piano and orchestra versions. It is one in a series of Stallman’s “new†works for flute. Dvořák composed the Suite in A Major in 1894, inspired by his happy and fruitful stay in the “New World†—a period that produced some of his greatest works, full of thematic freshness, raw energy and folk influences, both American and Old World Czech. The “New World†Symphony, Cello Concerto, “American†Quartet, String Quintet in E≤ Major, the Violin Sonatina and this A Major Suite are all cut from the same musical cloth—textured with his personal impressions of the Wild West’s fascinating Indian and Afro-American music, its God-fearing and friendly people, its vast open spaces and its awe-inspiring natural beauty.PrefaceConceived originally as a work for solo piano, the Suite in A Major was composed by Dvořák in 1894, during his famous two-year visit to the United States. He wrote the work in a mere ten days, and a year later made a full orchestration of it. The Suite was first performed in this second version in 1910 in Prague at the Rudolfinum. Dvořák, who died in 1904, never had a chance to hear a performance of this stirring orchestral realization. The Suite was inspired by the composer’s happy and fruitful stay in the “New Worldâ€, especially by his unforgettable summers spent in the quiet Czech-American village of Spillville, Iowa—a period that produced some of his greatest works, full of thematic freshness, raw energy and folk influences, both American and Old World Czech. The “New World†Symphony, Cello Concerto, “American†Quartet, String Quintet in Eb Major, the Violin Sonatina and this A Major Suite are all cut from the same musical cloth—textured with his personal impressions of the Wild West’s fascinating Indian and Afro-American music, its God-fearing and friendly people, its vast open spaces and its awe-inspiring natural beauty.Several of the Suite’s affecting melodies find echoes in these other, better known compositions of this American period. Wistful themes abound in all five movements, reflecting Dvořák’s transformative American experience as it found resonance in his own emotions. Contrasting with deeply felt, contemplative passages are Dvořák’s joyous and tempestuous expressions, which open the second, third and final movements. This arrangement for flute and piano is based on both the piano and orchestra versions. It is one in a series of my “new†works for flute by some of our greatest composers and I am delighted to add it to the collection. I predict that the A Major Suite will become a popular addition to our Romantic recital repertoire, much like the Dvořák Sonatina.—Robert StallmanMarblehead, Mass.June 1, 2018.

Inspired by one of the flute repertoire’s loveliest melodies, SICILIANO (REIMAGINED) is a gently adapted “jazz-flavored†setting of the slow movement from Bach’s Sonata in Eb Major. Solo parts are provided both for C Flute and for Alto Flute. With a fairly close rendering of the authentic flute line and more contemporary chords in the piano part, SICILIANO (REIMAGINED) is an inviting way to play music with a modernized jazz sound, while reading traditional classical notation.Inspired by one of the flute repertoire’s loveliest melodies, Siciliano (Reimagined) never strays far from the source, except for its reharmonization. Occasional jazz-infused touches give the melody a fresh perspective, without diluting its purity. I am always moved by how beautifully the music of the 18th century and contemporary music coexist.Performers may play this arrangement in the Baroque style.

Inspired by a tour to Brazil with the Campbellsville Univeristy Chorale, Rio de Janeiro for Flute and Piano was written for Cristina Soares, a native of Rio de Janiero. The opening section in 7-beat phrases is meant to evoke the laid back attitude of the city with some bossa-nova style. An abrupt change in character leads to the more energetic side of the city, incorporating Latin rhythms, syncopation, and some blues inspired chromaticsim. There is a return to the original section, but this time in a minor mode and at a faster tempo, concluding with the lively energy that Rio de Janiero is known for. Seth Johnson (b.1989) is a composer, pianist, and cellist from Kentucky. He holds a Bachelor's of Arts in Music Theory/Composition and a Master's Degree in Music from Campbellsville University, where he served as composer-in-residence, principal cellist for the University Orchestra, and accompanist for the University Chorale. His works include numerous pieces for orchestra including Superhero Symphony, various solo/chamber pieces, as well as scores for the award winning Kentucky Education Television series My Kentucky Home.Solo Part Included: Flute.

A welcome addition to the bass flute repertoire, Dorff’s 14-minute sonata is designed as two pairs of slow-fast movements. While composed as a complete 4-movement sonata, either half may be performed alone as a 7-minute recital work. The movement titles are: I. Sprawling, burbling; II. Sparkling, glistening; III. Under Winter; and IV. Spring Spirits. When Peter Sheridan commissioned me to write a piece for bass flute and piano, his only requests were a sonata-like multi-movement work, and some kind of reference to New York, where we both grew up. Just the thought of a bass flute, with its broad and mighty airstream, already reminded me of the mighty Hudson River: from the dense woods of upstate New York, through the beautiful landscapes of New Paltz and Poughkeepsie, down through the celebrated Manhattan waterway. As I daydreamed how to build a sonata inspired by the Hudson, I thought of its deep primal nature carved by the Ice Age, and the life within the river and on its shores long before humans arrived. I thought of how the river’s magnetism drew Native Americans who honored and built their lives around it. I thought of beautiful trees and wildlife, the annual cycles of ecosystems, and the natural symbiosis between the river itself, the life within, and the life on land spawned by the river’s resources.I wondered what if Thoreau had sat by the Hudson rather than by Walden Pond; I wondered what if Hesse had set Siddhartha in the Hudson Valley with this river as his metaphor for the flow of life and time.I wondered whether the sonata should flow from north to south, or have chronological references. I wondered if I should allude to the many poets and painters who have drawn inspiration from the mighty Hudson. Every thought led to the river’s essence, its own spirit and life — flowing through raw nature, from skinny trickles to mightiness spawning cities; supporting subtle life, and becoming a central commons for human societies. The subtitle Spirit of the Hudson brings it all together.* * *The sonata is built in 4 movements, with formal inspiration from the Baroque: A slow Mvt. 1 “Sprawling, burbling†leads directly to the rapid Mvt. 2 “Sparkling, glistening,†followed by another slow-fast pair: Mvt. 3 “Under Winter†which leads directly into Mvt. 4 “Spring Spirits.†In addition to performances of the complete sonata, either pair of movements may be performed on its own for a shorter concert segment.SONATA (SPIRIT OF THE HUDSON) was premiered at the International Low Flutes Festival in April 2018 by its commissioner, bass flutist Peter Sheridan, with Hyeeun Hahm as pianist.

Compiled and edited by Amy Porter, Treasures for Flute and Piano is acollection of Philippe Gaubert’s shorter works for flute and piano. Gaubertwas a multi-talented musician, a marvelous flutist as well as a composer, teacher, and master conductor. Over his lifetime, he became one of the mostimportant musical figures in France between the World Wars in the first halfof the 20th century. Trained in theory and harmony at the Paris Conservatory,Gaubert was also deeply influenced by other composers at the time, includingDebussy, Fauré, and Dukas. Editor Amy Porter is a distinguished Professorat The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, and hasbeen praised by critics for her exceptional musical talent and her passion forscholarship. This edition represents eleven of the sixteen works from AmyPorter and Dr. Penelope Fischer’s video study guide, “The Gaubert Cycle: TheComplete Works for Flute and Piano by Philippe Gaubertâ€.Philippe Gaubert (1879–1941) was a very important teacher and flutist in our classical flute playing lineage. In this edition we have gathered his beautiful, shorter compositions for flute and piano all in one place, to be cherished as “Gaubert’s Treasures.â€Philippe Gaubert personified the modern French school of flute playing as introduced by his teacher Paul Taffanel (1844–1908) at the Paris Conservatory. Gaubert was a multitalented musician, a marvelous flutist as well as a gifted composer, teacher and master conductor. Over his lifetime he became one of the most important musical figures in France between the World Wars in the first half of the twentieth century. Gaubert’s musical andpedagogical gifts to us are passed along through generations of students and continue to touch the hearts of many who listen to his fine, and refined, music.Philippe Gaubert studied composition at the Paris Conservatory with Raoul Pugno, Xavier Leroux, and then for a brief time with Charles Lenepvu. It was after this study that he won the famous Prix de Rome second prize in composition. Even with his schooling of theory and harmony in Paris, he was deeply influenced by other composers of the time, namely Debussy, Fauré and Dukas. Between the years of 1905–1914 Gaubert’s early workswere arrangements and short pieces written for the year-end final exam pieces at the Conservatory.Between 1914–1918 Gaubert served in the French Army during World War I, most notably in the battle of Verdun in 1916. This was considered one of the largest battles against the Germans in WWI. He was wounded but his creativity level was not dampened. He was rewarded for his service and awarded medals for his bravery. It was during this time that he found the energy to compose his Deux Esquisses or 2 Scenes, and sketched out his first flute sonata.Gaubert composed his remaining five flute and piano works after 1922 in Paris, and clearly his poetic soul was transformed from the earlier years. He took in new forms and styles of compositions such as a Suite, a Ballade and a Sonatine. He also completed his Second and Third Sonatas for Flute and Piano, all of them dramatic works in terms of compositional techniques and grandeur of tone.Gaubert composed music easily throughout his lifetime, especially during summer breaks when the orchestra and Paris Opera seasons were on hiatus and he was not conducting. He loved literature and poetry which inspired over thirty vocal works from 1903 through 1938.He also wrote twenty-six instrumental chamber works for other instruments: oboe, cornet, clarinet, trombone, violin, viola, cello, harp and combinations of these instruments with piano. Some of these were commissioned jury pieces, but many were for his musician friends.Six full-length stage works, both ballets and operas for the stage, several tone poems and symphonies were written throughout his lifetime. This edition represents eleven out of the sixteen works from our video study guide “The Gaubert Cycle: The Complete Works for Flute and Piano by Philippe Gaubert†with guest pianist Tim Carey. Omitted in this edition are Sonatas Nos. 1–3, Ballade, and Sonatine.

The heat of the day ebbs away as the sun slowly dips from view over the western horizon. A dazzling display of warm hues, vibrant yellows, glowing oranges and burning reds, lights up the evening before cooling to calm blues, dark, cool purples andfinally the black of night. Such are the unforgettable sunsets that inspired Jan de Haan to write this piece. Kalevi Aho's (b. 1949) Flute Concerto (2002) was initially inspired by the magnificent, enigmatic poetry of the Swede Tomas Transtromer, but the vocal ideas nevertheless adapted themselves to the flute. There is lots of singing, lyrical music at the beginning and end of this three-movement work; the second movement, by contrast, is quick and brilliant. The finale follows from the second movement without a break, constituting an epilogue that draws all the threads together and brings the events to a close. This is one of the most beautiful works Aho has ever written. The virtuosic solo part is written for flute and alto flute, and Kari Vehmanen has created the piano reduction in 2019. The orchestral study score (ISMN 9790550096349) is available for sale and the orchestral material for hire.

André Jolivet (1905-1974) composed this Concerto for Flute and Strings in 1949. Initially written for Flute and String Orchestra, this version contains the scores for the Flute and the Piano and lasts 12 minutes. Thisstrong>Concerto for Flute and Strings is quite unusual as it was only created in two movements, each divided into a slow introduction and a fast main part. Used as one of the main pieces of the Geneva music contest _x001A_Concours deGenève_x001A_ in 2014, this concerto requires advanced skills. André Jolivet is a French composer who was really inspired by the Antiquity and had a strong interest for atonality. He also wrote many chamber music pieces, elevenconcertos, some orchestral and some vocal music.

Nico Schoeters took his first percussion lessons with Eric Buyle in the Academy for Music and Word in Boom, near Antwerp, after getting the hang of it through private lessons by Jozef Vervliet. Afterwards he continued his music studies at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, where he was taught by Leo Ouderits, Carlo Willems and Koen Wilmaers. In 1998 he graduated there with great distinction as Master in percussion. After cooperating on various projects in Belgium and abroad as a freelance percussionist, Nico took up a position as a percussionist in the National Orchestra of Belgium. However, despite of all his achievements as a percussionist, Nico Schoeters didn’t take his first musical steps by playing percussion, but by playing the piano. His love for the piano remained a common thread in his musical career. For example, he played numerous gigs as a pianist with his jazz quartet ‘Just Friends, consisting of a number of top musicians who are his friends. In addition he started composing piano works in 2012. Cosmopolydian is my first composition for symphonic windband. It's a solo piece for flute and vibraphone which is dedicated to Inge Smedts, principal piccolo at the Royal Wind Band of the Belgian Guides. It is written in the context of a musical project ‘Cocktail Maison'. This project includes a concert on May 25th, 2017 in De Singel in Antwerp where this work will be premiered, a CD recording and a concert tour. All the pieces for this project are new compositions by Piet Swerts, Jef Neve, Klaas Coulembier, Etienne Houben, Bart Watté, Jan Huylebroeck, Francois Glorieux and myself. All the compositions are inspired by a cocktail. My choice is the Cosmopolitan, but the non-alcoholic version, the mocktail actually. The title Cosmopolydian is a nod to the lydian scale which I used as a base for the majority of the piece. The idea behind the music is an image of children enjoying themselves, worry-free, during the holidays. Tired but satisfied, they go to sleep and have wonderful dreams. The next day they wake up to start a beautiful new day. The work is constructed in a typical ABA form. A quick first part: ‘sparkling allegro', which of course should sound very light and playful. A slow middle part warm adagio, in which the beautiful dreams become audible. The last part is a re-exposition of the first part in which eventually all the themes merge into the final.

Inspired by the French Romantic and Impressionist traditions, my romances for fute and piano, composed during late July and early August 1984, was carefully conceived for the marvelous lyrical and technical gifts of Robert Stallman and Richard Goode, to whom the work is warmly dedicated. All three Romances, although brief in duration, unfold with a sense of large gesture and design. The first Romance is in 3/4 time and flows generally in the manner of a lyrical waltz with occasional turbulent interruptions. The second Romance is in 4/4 time, unfolding in a stately Baroque-like manner, and the third Romance is in 2/4 time, melodically expansive and often tempestuous. All three Romances strive to honor the goals of traditional performance practice while, at the same time, they create an energy and drama of modernity and contemporary richness. And for these goals I am indebted to so many of the most outstanding performers and conductors of our time with whom I have worked and from whom I have learned much– those who have demonstrated the importance of preserving in addition to further developing those significant natural attributes of musical expression and traditional performance practice which are so often ignored in contemporary compositional values. — William Thomas McKinleyFlute & Piano Duration: 14' Composed: 1984 Published by: Notevole Music Publishing.

PRAYER for Flute and PianoAmanda Harberg's PRAYER is a rarity in the modern concert repertoire, beautiful romanticism built of a haunting aria for solo flute. Within the reach of younger players, the work was inspired as a prayer for the healing of a close family member. The acclaim for this work among musicians has led to the compose'’s versions for orchestra, for a variety of other solo instruments with piano, and as the slow movement of Harberg's Concerto for Viola and Orchestra.

CANCIÓN DE CUNA is the Spanish word for Lullaby. This poignant 7-minute work was commissioned by flutist Cindy Anne Broz in remembrance of her mother; Zyman responded with a lullaby of gentle beauty and a strong folkloristic Mexican feeling, inspired by the lullabies he heard as a child. Suitable for recitals, memorials, and many other settings.
