'Per Piero' and 'Per Maurizio' are among the most recent pieces written for solo guitar by Gilberto Cappelli. The first piece, written in 2006, represents a surprise present for my fiftieth birthday: it was written after a request of a pupil of mine, Alessandra Lucchi, who performed it as a premiere during my birthday party. The second piece (2009) expresses the composer’s participation for the pain caused by the sudden death of Maurizio Biasini, scientist and guitarist who completed his musical studies at Cesena Conservatory where Gilberto Cappelli was in the Board of Examiners. The piece was premiered at a concert in memory of Maurizio held in the Bonci Theatre in Cesena. The use of a particular tremolo effect is a typical characteristic of all the guitar works of this composer; a tremolo which is very different from the traditional one. The performer is asked to produce – as much as possible – a long and continuous sound, as if it were a voice or the long sound of string or wind instruments. The tremolo will have to be very dense and homogeneous. In the case of a tremolo on two or three strings it is necessary to start playing two or three sounds simultaneously only once and then continuing alternating them – but always tending to achieve a homogeneity of sound. The Hawaiian word for slack key guitar, kÄ« hÅâ??alu, means to â??loosen the keyâ? or retune some of the strings to create a harmonious sound with an open or alternate tuning. Slack key is a fingerpicking style characterized by strong alternating bass lines played with the thumb. While slack key can be played on any guitar, most players prefer a nylon- or steel-stringed acoustic instrument. This book presents 25 intermediate to advanced traditional and original tunes in the Hawaiian slack key style. Melodies are often harmonized in sixths or thirds played with or without double stops. Techniques like syncopated bass lines, hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, and harmonics are tastefully employed to evoke the images of ocean breezes, swaying palms, hula dancers and white sandy beaches. The author writes, â??Unless you grew up playing slack key, itâ??s hard to get from the material presented in most books and DVDs to a fluid, play-it-your-own-way style.â? This book seeks to reveal the insights the author has gleaned from studying and jamming with some of the giants of the slack key style, and help you develop a style all your own. Includes access to online audio tracks of all 25 relaxing but challenging Hawaiian slack key tunes.

With this Suite for guitar â?? whose main reference point is the baroque instrumental suite and its traditional dances â?? the interpreter takes a journey through various compositional styles (e.g. the use of microstructures, modality, atonality, harmony in fourths, whole-tone scales), in the form of a dance. Within the scope of this metacultural project, both performer and listener are presented with a musical juxtaposition where the baroque suite is always present as a historic reference. This project is aimed at an average level of guitar students where instrumental technique is equally as important as composition. In this respect, the Suite is useful in the areas of concert performance, in the teaching of instrumental technique and in compositional analysis.

Ariel Lazarus Guitarra Liturgia Two pieces based on music from the Spanish and Portuguese tradition. Contents: Jerusalem de Sefarad - Suite for Guitar Contrapunto Sefardi The composer writes: For many years I wanted to compose a piece for guitar which would inspire interested students to expand their repertoire in the direction of Jewish music. The most natural thing for me was to write a suite based on themes from the synagogue in which I grew up – the Spanish and Portuguese synagogue of Gibraltar. My beloved grandfather served all his life as hazzan (cantor) of this synagogue, and I always felt as a composer and educator that I had a special obligation to continue his tradition and pass it on to a new generation. In this composition, I let the guitar echo the piyyutim (semi-liturgical poems) that were part of my childhood: Adon Olam, Sh'charchoret, Achot K'tana, Yigdal, Borei ad Ana, all of which are sung in the Spanish and Portuguese tradition from Gibraltar to London, and from New York to Jerusalem. I let myself dream the piyyutim, take them apart and reconstruct them as a short suite for guitar, the results of which you are invited to hear here. As a conceptual idea for the suite, I choose to suggest about the cultural continuation between the Diaspora and the land of Israel by way of referencing the well-known melody of Naomi Shemer, which is also popular among the hazzanim.Dr. Ariel Lazarus is a unique voice among Israeli composer-performers today. Brought up in a family with Jewish musical roots both in Gibraltar and Westphalia, he began composing and playing the guitar in his teens, and has been committed to developing his own compositional language ever since, always maintaining an open dialogue with his traditions. Lazarus received his BMus and MMus degrees from Oklahoma City University in classical guitar performance and composition where he studied with American composer Dr. Edward Knight. He earned his PhD from Bar Ilan University, studying composition with Prof. Betty Olivero and Prof. Gideon Lewensohn and conducting research under the supervision of Prof. Edwin Seroussi from the Hebrew University. His symphonic works have been premiered by the Raanana Symphonette Orchestra, and his chamber works have been performed by various ensembles in the United States, Central Europe, Portugal, Gibraltar, Scandinavia and Israel. Lazarus performs regularly as Art Ambassador on behalf of the Israeli Ministry of Diaspora affairs Amiel BaKehila program. His solo album A Hebrew Capriccio was released by the German boutique label SmoothFactor and was awarded critical acclaim, among others, in Haaretz, and Neue Westfalishe. Dr. Lazarus is the musical director and co-founder of the Israeli Ladino Orchestra. His work with the orchestra has been recognized by the official Carta de España. He teaches at the Academic College for Education Givat Washington, and the Rimon School of Music. Lazarus’s work has been awarded by the Israeli Pais Art council and ACUM.
