Composition winner of the 2nd Edition (2008) of the Classical Guitar Musical Composition Competition â??Suoni Nuovi Autoriâ?? in Latina, Italy (Section 1)The composition Roma born after a short travel in the eternal city. The multiple cultural, historical and landscaped stimuli that derive from its ruins must touch the mind of every visitor dipping it and transporting it behind in the history: these are the feelings that have inspired the composition of a conceptualistic-descriptive music work, dedicated to the places that more meant during the authorâ??s travel. First part, â??Anfiteatro Flavioâ??, is clearly dedicated to Colosseo. It is so imposing and majestic that recalls still today the outcry of the battles and the noise of the iron: all that is translate in music with frequent changes of time and a virtuosistic and pressing writing. The apex of the fight marks in the composition a growing culminated in a moment of suspension and the immediate resumption with change of theme for the victory moment and its majestic celebration. The second part, â??Villa Borgheseâ??, marks the passage to a situation of ecstasy and serenity inspired from the beauty and tranquillity of the places of the famous roman park. The composition develops with sweetness but are also present dissonant notes that recall the park contextualizzation in the heart of the city, with its chaotic present and with the urgent violence of its past.

Guitar sonata A Walk to the Mysterious Woods (2012-13) is so far the most extensive of the works Kai Nieminen has written for his own instrument, the guitar. The sonata features virtuosic and delicate timbre which is typical of Nieminen's musical idiom and which requires both technical and poetic skill of the performer. The music invokes a fairytale-like scene of nature with its references to Finnish mythology. Kai Nieminen's guitar sonata is in four movements which follow each other attacca. The form of the work resembles the traditional sonata form: exposition (A Walk with Birdsong) - development (Along the Brook and Song(s) from the Arctic) - recapitulation (Return). The dark chords of the beginning, the pressing silence and the icy-sounding harmony created by the E flat bass line evoke an image of a winter forest. As if following birdsong, the music carries the listener through various landscapes and moods. Birdsong takes the listener to a brook, which then carries the traveller to the ancient Sami joik, a traditional form of chant, and allows him or her to bask in the serenity of natural beauty in a moment where the past and present meet.

Kai Nieminen's Fragmental Reflections (2018) draws on the melancholy mood of the Finnish folk song Tein mina pillin pajupuusta (I made a willow whistle) familiar to most Finns. The emotional scale of this 10-minute guitar fantasy ranges from a nostalgic striving for beauty to discordantly disruptive moments.
