The two organ concertos are marked by somewhat unusual instrumentation. Hector Berlioz warned about a certain antipathy between the organ and orchestral instruments, but with the use of three horns in op. 137 proves to be a fine piece of artistry: Rheinberger supplied tone colors which he had perceived the organ to lack. The trio version of the Suite op. 149 adds to the repertoire of sacred chamber music. Rheinberger's later addition to the work of an ad libitum string orchestra takes this Suite into the world of the triple concerto and the concerto grosso, without exactly corresponding to those genres.

Rheinberger began work on his second Symphony during his visit to Italy with his wife in 1874. He was commissioned to write it by an orchestral society in Florence - an indication that his reputation had already spread throughout Europe. The autograph score contains a poem by his wife Fanny, which in four sections expressed the moods of impressions of the visit which seem to underlie the symphony. Contemporaries praised particularly the beauty of the Adagio. The work is here presented for the first time in an edition based critically on the sources.

Volume 3 of the Complete Edition contains the Mass in A minor op. 197, which was the last work Rheinberger ever composed. The Mass was left unfinished, since he died while working on it. Only the Kyrie, Gloria and the Credo, through the et resurrexit were completed. However the remainder of the Credo has been preserved in the form of sketches. These are published in the present edition for the first time. In addition, the sketches were carefully completed and prepared for performance by the editor. This version is published in the appendix of this volume.

The choral ballad Toggenburg op. 76 is based on the legend of the holy Ida von Toggenburg. It enjoyed a great popularity with the public in Rheinberger's day. Just a short time after it was first published in 1874 this work was performed numerous time. The six-movement work is scored alternately for choir, various sized vocal ensembles and soloists. The other works in this volume are of a smaller scale . They are all choral compositions of one movement, although in the case of Die tote Braut op. 81, a solo voice (mezzo soprano) is called for.

In 1884, Josef Rheinberger composed a setting for solo voice and piano of the Christmas poem Morgenstern der finstern Nacht by the mystic Baroque poet Angelus Silesius at the behest of a magazine. 16 years later, he returned to the melody and set it for four-part a cappella choir. Both versions are printed in the choral song sheet. The choral setting - published here for the first time - is a welcome addition to the Christmas repertoire.
