The G major mass of Mozart followed a very special type of mass pattern, namely, that of the Missa pastoralis. In Mozart's time it was a widespread type of mass, especially in Bohemia and Italy, in which melodies and rhythms like those familiar from pastoral Christmas music were frequently found. The themes in this type of mass are song-like and often make use of folksongs or references to well-known tunes. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Creep it Real, by Chris M. Bernotas, is the perfect selection for your fall or Halloween concert! This creeptastic piece uses only the first few notes taught in most method books and will set a haunted mood by using minor-key modality and optional glissando effects for the trombones. The date of composition of the cantata Lobe den Herren, meine Seele can only be conjectured. However, several indications suggest an early composition, possibly during Kuhnau's stay in Zittau. The work is one of only two known cantatas by Kuhnau in which cornetti are scored - the second work is the cantata Christ lag in Todes-Banden (PB 32034) -, even so in combination with three trombones as an early baroque wind section. In addition, the musical texture of the introductory Sonata can certainly be understood as a reminiscence of the polychorality known from the Renaissance and early Baroque as well as their connection with the basso continuo era, since four strings and bassoon on the one side and five wind instruments on the other side face each other over a continuous continuo part. The text of the cantata is a selection of a few verses from Psalm 103. This is the larger scored cantata with this textual basis; parallel to it exists a smaller scored one for alto, bass, violin, oboe d'amore and continuo.

Johann Sebastian Bach was able to appreciate good works by other composers, as is shown by contemporary accounts, and by a glimpse into what remains of his music library. Francesco Durante, maestro di cappella in Naples, was known in his time as an accomplished composer, who in his sacred works sought to achieve accommodation between the strict stile antico and the stile moderno of concert music at that time. This combination distinguishes his Mass in C minor, and it may have been what awakened Johann Sebastian Bach's interest in this work. He copied it about 1730, not merely for study purposes but in order to perform it, as is indicated by various alterations which he made to the composition. Bach replaced the Christe by a composition of his own, and for the Kyrie II he used Durante's music for the Gloria, making the alterations required by the different words. A worthwhile discovery! Irish Mood was written in a classic â??theme and variationsâ?? construction, opening with an Irish-inspired melodic theme, which is then followed by four variations of divergent character. After the introduction of the theme by the soloist, the cornets and trombones play the main melody in Variation 1, while the soloist provides a flowing counter melody. Next comes the highly extrovert and lively Variation 2, contrasted by an introverted Variation 3 in a minor key. A masterful tutti (Variation 4) then leads the piece toward a brilliant ending.

Aurora Eclipsed was inspired by the solar eclipse of 2017.  During a solar eclipse, a beautiful and fascinating aurora sometimes forms around the moon creating an eerie outline. This “ring of fire†is actually the sun’s outer edges being revealed for the human eye. An aggressive composition younger students will enjoy playing over and over again.I wrote Aurora Eclipsed while looking outside at 2017’s solar eclipse. I find space and celestial bodies so fascinating. To think of how small we are compared to the scale of even just the moon is impressive.During a solar eclipse, a beautiful and fascinating aurora sometimes forms around the moon creating an eerie outline. This “ring of fire†is actually the sun’s outer edges being revealed for the human eye. About the work:Unlike most of my young-band pieces, Aurora Eclipsed begins at its peak tempo. The rhythmic pattern in m. 2 is repeated throughout the piece and is used in the melody in order to help facilitate the teaching of eighth-note patterns. The melodic pattern changes slightly at m. 25, while remaining just as repetitious as the previous pattern, giving everyone ample opportunity for exposure. At m. 25 the directions call for euphonium and bassoon only. This is merely a color choice and can easily be used with trombones to fill the need or to help strengthen your students' playing. The use of sfz is not used very much in this level of music, but I thought with the addition of the accents that it would be a great opportunity to teach this colorful effect.

Next to Leopold Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Michael Haydn, Johann Ernst Eberlin is regarded as one of the most important musicians who worked at the Court of the Archbishop in the 18th century. As Court Music Director, organist and composer he had a lasting influence on musical life in both Salzburg, as well as in the entire south-German region. His extensive oeuvre comprises over 300 works, and his compositions served as models for the young Mozart. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2710900.
