A versatile Mass setting for use throughout the liturgical year, Mass of the Sun of Justice / Misa Sol de Justicia is fully bilingual, singable entirely in English or in Spanish, or any pastoral combination of both languages. At its core, this setting is built on assembly-minded melodies. Much of the choral writing is two-part, albeit spelled out in four voices, whereby the basses frequently double the soprano melody, and the alto and tenor lines essentially share a single harmony in their respective ranges, splitting only at cadence points for a fuller effect. Optional descants and divisi further expand the voicing possibilities. The additional instrumentation is particularly spirited, further enhancing these sung texts for solemn occasions. “Sun of justice” is a term used to reference Christ with respect to his second coming, as found in the ancient “O” antiphons. This title appears in the Lectionary among the Alleluia options for the common of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and is, in fact, assigned to the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, celebrated within the Advent season. Following the complete collection of Heinrich von Herzogenberg's secular choral music (winner of the Music Edition Prize 2011), Carus has published Volume 2, the complete sacred a cappella choral works. The editor is once again Konrad Klek, who describes in detail the circumstances surrounding the composition of these works. In addition to the five cycles of Liturgische Gesange for various services during the church year, the original liturgical integration of the choral music is explained in detail. The four to eight-voice motet Mitten wir im Leben sind from 1881, composed in reaction to a catastrophic fire, is a first edition from the manuscript. Of the nine additional motets, until now two were not available: a festive five-part motet for Pentecost and the great double chorus for the silver anniversary of Mendelssohn's daughter, Lili Wach. Smaller choral settings for specific occasions (e.g., weddings) round out the picture. The Begrabnis-Gesang (funeral lament) for tenor solo and men's choir at the end of this volume, with his own words as well as music, is a very personal offering by the composer to the widow of his deceased friend, Philipp Spitta. All the works are also available in separate editions.

The numerous, mostly religious works of the Bohemian composer Andreas Hammerschmidt are composed with great craftmanship, and sound full and catchy. They were composed for 17th century village churches, in which they were sung by the congregation—and they are still familiar and popular today. Robert van Beringen took the advent hymn Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Gates and created this beautiful arrangement.

De talrijke, overwegend religieuze composities van de Boheemse componist Andreas Hammerschmidt zijn solide gecomponeerd, klinken vol en liggen goed in het gehoor. Deze eenvoudige werken werden in de zeventiende eeuw vooral voor dekerkkoren gecomponeerd. Zo zijn ze tot op de dag van vandaag bekend en populair gebleven. Robert van Beringen koos de titel Machet die Tore weit om het te bewerken voor harmonie- en fanfareorkest.

Die zahlreichen, vorwiegend geistlichen Kompositionen des böhmischen Komponisten Andreas Hammerschmidt sind handwerklich solide komponiert, voll klingend und eingängig. Sie wurden im 17. Jahrhundert vor allem für Dorfkirchen komponiert, wo sie von Laienchören gesungen wurden und so bis heute sich großer Verbreitung und Beliebtheit erfreuen. Robert van Beringen nahm sich des vorweihnachtlichen Titels Machet die Tore weit an und schuf daraus dieses wunderschöne Arrangement.

Maria durch ein? Dornwald ging (Blest Mary Wanders Through the Thorn) is a traditional German Christmas song. The earliest known version is recorded in the Andernacher Gesangbuch from 1608. Halfway through the nineteenth century it was a regional pilgrimage song in Thüringen, and at the beginning of the twentieth century, the current version was registered in the songbook Zupfgeigenhansl of the German youth movement. Michael Bilkes used the well-known melody to create this attractive arrangement for concert band.

Maria durch ein’ Dornwald ging (Maria door een doornwoud trad) is een traditioneel Duits kerstlied. De oudst bekende versie is opgetekend in het Andernacher Gesangbuch uit 1608. Halverwege de negentiende eeuw was heteen regionaal bedevaartslied in Thüringen en aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw werd het in de huidige versie opgenomen in het liedboek Zupfgeigenhansl van de Duitse jeugdbeweging. Maria durch ein’ Dornwald ging heeftal vele arrangeurs ge nspireerd tot het schrijven van koorbewerkingen. Michael Bilkes verwerkte de bekende melodie in een sfeervol arrangement voor harmonieorkest.

Maria durch ein’ Dornwald ging ist ein traditionelles deutsches Adventslied, dessen früheste überlieferte Version im Andernacher Gesangbuch von 1608 dokumentiert ist und seither viele Arrangeure zu Bearbeitungen für diverse Instrumentalbesetzungen und Chöre inspiriert hat. Michael Bilkes verwendete die bekannte Melodie für diese gefühlvolle Bearbeitung für Blasorchester.
