At an early age Kodály composed several Ave Marias for various ensembles of performers. In its final form this chorus seems the most complete of these. From the manuscript scores we know that the work was written in October 1898, while Kodály was still at school in Nagyszombat. In its original form it requires a three-part female choir, strings and organIn the present arrangement (by Imre Sulyok) the material written for the strings is incorporated into the organ part. Ave Maria is a traditional Catholic prayer asking for intercession from the Virgin Mary. The prayer has often been set to music. Frank Gazda has beautifully arranged four musical settings of the prayer for Trombone Quartet or four-part Trombone Ensemble by: Jacob Arcadelt (Renaissance), Johann Joseph Fux (Baroque), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Classical) and Giuseppe Verdi (Romantic).Although originally composed as four-part choral settings, they work perfectly for the Trombone. Each piece stands on its own as a work of beauty, or the four can be performed as a whole. They are at a moderately advanced level of difficulty.

Bertold Hummel schrieb das vorliegende Ave Maria fur seinen Sohn Martin, der dieses Stuck auch in Begleitung des familiaren Streichquartetts musizierte, wovon eine noch erhaltene Bratschenstimme zeugt. Die zweiteilige Komposition verbindet eine terzverwandt angelegte Dur-Moll-Tonalitat mit modaler Harmonik. Pragendes Element der Begleitung ist eine absteigende, phrygische Tonleiter, die im Verlauf des Stuckes die Richtung wechselt und auch Transformationen ins Dorische bzw. ins Moll erfahrt. Der zweite Teil ('Sancta Maria...') greift die Musik des Anfangs wieder auf und fuhrt zu neuen Kombinationen des musikalischen Materials. (Christoph Weinhart 2015).
