This set of variations on the well-known hymn tune ‘Holy, holy, holy!’ will make a most satisfying addition to the solo repertoire for euphonuim and concert band. It is in the traditional air varié form with an introduction, theme and 3 variations. The original melody (known as Nicaea) was composed by John Bacchus Dykes’ especially for Reginald Heber’s renowned hymn of praise and became universally popular when it was included in Hymns Ancient and Modern in 1861. A beautiful solo that will test the soloists ability to show true emotion.

Variants on an English Hymn Tune is geschreven in een traditionele air varié-vorm- met een introductie, thema en drie variaties. Philip Sparke wählte das bekannte englische Kirchenlied Holy, holy, holy und schuf daraus eine kreative Reihe von Variationen für Euphonium und Blasorchester. Hymnus was commissioned by the Wilhelmina Easterein Fanfare Orchestra in the Autumn of 1999 for their performance at the World Music Contest, Kerkrade.

The commission was the result of a collaboration between the composer and the thenmusical director, Marten van der Wal.

The exact meaning of the word Hymnus is not known but it is taken in this presentation to mean hymn or hymn-like.
The melodic material is organic and grows from an initial unison tone. Thisinterval is gradually expanded to form the cell F E C F, a semitone, third, fifth. The only other melodic motif is the ascending three-note pattern spanning a major third. This is the second of his compositions to use this ascending motif, theother being Fanfare for a Bright New Age for Brass Band and Organ, also of 2000. These characteristic intervals appear in many contrasting moods and guises throughout the piece.

The opening unison notes are intended to convey as sense ofpower and magnificence, like the first sounds at the dawning of the universe.
After the immense power, a period of stunned silence and reverence. The evolution of the hymn melody incorporates a variety of moods and atmospheres, sometimes expressing much joy and celebration whilst also suggesting periods of intense savagery or prayerful contemplation.
The hymn builds as the piece progresses and is finally stated in its complete form at letter W.

The official worldpremiere of the work was given by Wilhelmina Easterein at the World Music Contest 2001. Whilst the composer was unable to attend in person, he was able to enjoy the premier simultaneously transmitted via a mobile phone from the audience!

Conductors Note
The tempo indications are to be viewed as a guide rather than a literal instruction. Within the music there is an innate sense of pulse and metre, lending itself to considerable rubato.
Melody is king, and all else is mere support and decoration, careful attention must therefore be given to balance.

This flexible piece in 4 parts was written by Jacob de Haan as a ‘theme tune’ for the Yamaha teaching method seminars in Germany. The solemn and dignified hymn-like melody will add a touch ofgrandeur to any performance. Its simplicity and rich harmonies suggest overtones of Land of Hope and Glory and this would be a good item to bring a deep and uplifting sense of occasion to your concert.

Vanuit zijn didactische ervaring met het componeren van eenvoudige muziek voor variabele bezettingen gaf de Nederlandse componist Jacob de Haan in 2004 een workshop tijdens het Yamaha Bläserklassen Kongress in Oberursel (bij het DuitseFrankfurt). Op verzoek van Wolfgang Feuerborn, leider en initiator van het project, schreef Jacob de Haan speciaal voor deze seminars een hymne. Hij noemde het stuk - heel toepasselijk - The Seminar Hymn. Dit werk isleerzaam en motiverend voor jonge muzikanten - en een plezier om naar te luisteren.

Aufgrund seiner didaktischen Erfahrungen im Komponieren von leichter Musik für variable Besetzungen hielt der holländische Komponist Jacob de Haan im Rahmen des Yamaha BläserKlassen-Kongresses in Oberursel 2004 einen Lehrgang ab. Auf Wunsch von Wolfgang Feuerborn, dem Leiter und Initiator des Projekts, schrieb Jacob de Haan speziell für dieses Seminar eine Hymne. Er nannte das Stück - passenderweise - The Seminar Hymn. Dieses Werk vermittelt geschickt wertvolles Lehrmaterial für junge Musiker mit viel Motivation und Spielfreude, die sich auch aufs Publikum übertragen wird.

La Yamaha BläserKlasse est un projet développé par Yamaha en partenariat avec le système éducatif allemand. Ce concept permet d’enseigner la musique d’ensemble l’école primaire (et premier cycle secondaire). Bénéficiant d’une riche expérience dans la composition d’œuvres pédagogiques instrumentation variable, Jacob de Haan compose un hymne, spécialement pour les séminaires d’application durant lesquels les enseignants sont formés cette nouvelle manière d’apprendre la musique.
