The two-movement, incompletely transmitted Horn Concerto in D major K. 412 was long considered as Mozarts first horn concerto; it is, however, his last, and was written between March and December 1791. Mozart undertook revisions in the autograph which contains the most important orchestral parts next to the entire solo horn part in order to adjust the work to the modest technical abilities of the planned soloist Joseph Leutgeb. Mozart revised and completed the first movement, eliminated lower notes in the solo part, rewrote difficult passages and expanded orchestral interludes to give Leutgeb additional breath rests. Mozart also made similar simplifications in the second movement as well, but his early death prevented the completion of the work.Robert D. Levin reconstructed both versions of the concerto on the basis of the autograph. Next to the version revised by Mozart (post correcturam), he now presents the original version (ante correcturam) for the first time in a musical text revised and supplemented according to rigorous philological criteria.

The Missa Dei Patris ZWV 19 was composed in 1740 and ranks among the later works of the Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka. It opens an incompletely transmitted cycle of six masses which the composer himself designated as Missae ultimae. The musical text of the present conductor's score is based on that of Volume 93 of the Denkmaler edition Das Erbe deutscher Musik. The new piano vocal score has been edited by the reputable expert Andreas Kohs. Zelenka's artistic personality, his biography and his compositional style are utterly distinctive. His style is highly experimental. Was Zelenka really one of the greatest composers of the 18th century, or only one of the most interesting? I think that he still has several surprises for us. (Schweizerische Musikzeitung)Zelenka's Masses - fine specimens of Baroque choral literature, some parts of which are set even more colorfully than in the corresponding compositions by Bach. The critical edition of Vivaldi's instrumental works is now enriched with a new title, substantial and interesting: this is the concerto for two violins and two cellos, RV 575, a work previously published in the Ricordi-Malipiero edition and performed and recorded numerous times without its incompleteness ever being noticed: this is a most unusual instance where the loss of a single folio of the manuscript, containing around 14 bars of music, produced no obvious harmonic or melodic hiatus between the surrounding material, thereby giving the impression of a work preserved in its entirety. However, a careful study of the work shows that, on the contrary, there is a significant gap, for the filling of which the editor offers a plausible reconstruction. In addition to this large section of music, the manuscript is seen to lack a few short 'echo' responses between the soloists: one more reason for republishing the work in a critical edition with commentary that is designed to stimulate better-informed performances in the future.

The motet Gutes und Barmherzigkeit was composed following the death of the Leipzig student Jacob Schulte in 1625, for the comfort of his most sorrowful parents, as Schutz's dedication states. The motet survived only incompletely, with soprano II, tenor II, and the vocal bass parts missing. Editor Helmut Lauterwasser has reconstructed these parts and describes his approach to this in the foreword. Separate edition taken from Vol. 19 of the Stuttgart Schutz Edition (Complete Edition Carus 20.919).

An impressive piece at this grade level featuring syncopation and mixed meters. The lush and beautiful slow section adds contrast to the exciting rhythmic drive. Skillfully arranged for bands with less than ideal instrumentation, this outstanding piece is perfect for concert and festival use and is sure to make your band sound its best! Highly recommended!
About Build-A-Band Series
The Build-A-Band Series provides educational and enjoyable music for bands with incomplete or unbalanced instrumentation. Written using just four or five parts (plus percussion), these effective arrangements will work with any combination of brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments as long as you distribute the parts so that each of the five parts is covered. All of the publications in the Build-A-Band Series have been arranged to be playable with any instrumentation as long as each part is used: 1st Part, 2nd Part, 3rd Part, 4th Part, and Bass Part. (Please note: In some of these arrangements the 4th Part, and the Bass Part are the same, making it possible to play those arrangements with only 4 parts.)

Gott ist unsre Zuversicht BWV 197 was probably written in the second half of the 1730s for a wedding, no further details of which are known. In the opening chorus in particular, it features quite a sizeable orchestra. The text of the cantata has one major theme - trust in God! In a magnificent lullaby (movement 3) all cares are sung to sleep. The other arias, with their exceptionally exquisite combinations of scorings, make the cantata into a quite special work, albeit one which is associated with a particular occasion. The wedding cantata BWV 197 draws on older material for some of its movements. Two movements are parodies on arias from the incomplete surviving Christmas cantata Ehre sei Gott in der Hohe, BWV 197a, including the lullaby O du angenehmes Paar, of which only the last quarter survives from the Christmas cantata - it is O du angenehmer Schatz there. By using the later version, Diethard Hellmann has been able to reconstruct the original version of this dreamlike beautiful movement; however, the complete Christmas cantata cannot be reconstructed from the sources. Score available separately - see item CA.3119700.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's horn concertos: the Mozart expert Henrik Wiese edits the central work genre of Viennese classicism according to the current status of international Mozart research. Mozart wrote the Horn Concerto K. 417 - like the other works of this genre as well - for his horn-playing friend Joseph Leutgeb. The jokes which the composer made at Leutgeb's expense are wellknown. For example, he called the dedicatee a donkey in the autograph, and, as Henrik Wiese evidences in his preface, Mozart also occasionally enjoyed a bit of tomfoolery with the soloist in the musical text as well.Otherwise the editor's task was anything but amusing. The main source - the autograph score - is incomplete: missing are the close of Movement I as well as the entire slow middle movement. For these two sections, Wiese used a copy of the score from the archive of the publisher Johann Andre. The unusual circumstance that Mozart generally left the horn part almost unmarked recurs in the Concerto K. 417 and was deliberately maintained in the Urtext edition. With parts for horn in F and Eb major.

Since it has come down to us in an incomplete form, the score had to be subjected to a comprehensive reconstruction in 1995. Diethard Hellmann's painstaking work was the third reconstruction following those of Bernhard Todt and Walter Reinhart. A Totally Awesome little rock tune that your younger players will absolutely love. Not too hard and slightly on the funky side of things. Red, White, & Blues has that appeal that will make this one of those tunes that everyone wants to play or hear. As with all tunes in the Norman Lee Elementary Band Series, this one comes with a full score and is playable with an incomplete instrumentation. Top notch writing!!

One of Mozart best known themes arranged by Scott Stanton for very small bands, and those with severe instrumentation problems. Will sound great as long has you have the four parts covered and optional guitar, percussion and keyboard parts can add to the overall effect. All students should be exposed to the great masters and this publication helps makes that possible! A real winner!

As well as the Mass in B minor, there are four further, shorter mass compositions by Bach, the so-called Lutheran or Kyrie-Gloria masses. Despite their high musical qualities, they are often overshadowed by other church works by Bach. With their six-movement structure (up to the Cum sancto spiritu) they had their specific liturgical position in church services of the time of Bach. The masses largely comprise parodies, with the original music mainly taken from cantatas which Bach sometimes considerably reworked in his well-known style according to the new context of the work. Ulrich Leisinger has edited the four works for Carus in new critical editions. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3123500.
