The Sousa Band was preparing to embark upon a world tour in 1910. Before leaving for the tour, Sousa composed a new march for which he did not immediately provide a title. The new march was so well received in Australia, that originally, Sousa titled his march Land of the Golden Fleece. The high commissioner of Australia, George Reid, requested that the title be changed to The Federal. When the march was published, Sousa honored both Australia and New Zealand by providing the dedication To the Australasians..

Wagner took the title of Under the Double Eagle – his opus 159, composed in 1902 – from the state emblem of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This march has been extremely popular for over a century and exists in over fifty different instrumental and vocal arrangements. The march became a favorite of John Philip Sousa, who recorded it three times. The piece is now the official regimental march of the 1st Austrian Artillery Regiment Number Two. The present edition is a synthesis of three publications of the march, incorporating the best aspects of each edition, to include the additional woodwind obligato in the trio.
