Bij dit winterverhaal staat het thema kerst eens n et centraal. Vandaar dat u A Winter’s Tale net zo goed rondom de kerstdagen als ook bij andere concerten in het winterseizoen kunt uitvoeren. De muziek geeft een beschrijvingvan een winters tafereel op het land: een zonsondergang, sprookjesachtig besneeuwde landerijen en bossen. In de verte klinken de bellen van een slee die langzaam maar zeker naderbij komt. Maar dan keert de rust weer terug, terugin het verstilde landschap…

A Winter’s Tale hat keinen direkten Bezug zum Thema Weihnachten, kann also ebenso zu (vor-) weihnachtlichen Anlässen wie auch bei anderen Konzerten im Winterhalbjahr aufgeführt werden. Die Musik beschreibt eine Winterszenerie auf dem Lande: Ein stiller Sonnenuntergang, tief verschneite Felder und Wälder, von ferne klingen die Glöckchen eines Schlittens, der sich als Dreigespann entpuppt, bevor zum Schluss des Werkes wieder Ruhe in die Szenerie einkehrt.

Philip Sparke a composé cette pièce pour le Western Plains Wind Consortium, placé sous la direction de son fondateur, Daniel Baldwin. La création fut assurée par l’Orchestre d’Harmonie de l’Université d’État de l’Oklahoma Panhandle (Dr. Matthew C. Saunders, direction), le 1er décembre 2009, au Centennial Theatre Goodwell en Oklahama (États-Unis). Philip Sparke a réalisé une scène d’hiver en pleine campagne. A Winter’s Tale s’ouvre avec une série d’accords soutenus, joués par les bois, et colorés par le timbre cristallin des cloches, tandis qu’un saxophone alto chante une complainte crépusculaire. Un passage orchestral court, mais dense, prélude l’exposition du thème principal. Les couleurs douces et vaporeuses enveloppent les champs et les forêts enneigés. L’orchestre reprend le thème tandis que l’on entend au loin un tintement de grelots annonçant le passage imminent d’une tro ka. Une fois passée, la musique s’apaise et le thème principal revient avant de laisser la place au motif d’ouverture qui vient conclure la trame musicale.

Leaves of grass by Matthew Whittall is a major addition to the contemporary piano literature. The 12 preludes explore a wide range of styles, sonoroties and pianistic challenges.
Inspired by Walt Whitman's verses, the preludes are not programmatic in nature, but rather Whittall's personal distillations of the atmosphere of each poem. Although some hew quite closely to the poetry that gave rise to them, more often than not it was a few words, the rhythm of a phrase, or a single, iconic image that proved to be the catalyst for each piece, says the composer.
Leaves of grass is organized into three books, each containing four preludes. The preludes are ordered to produce both a sense of variety and dramatic flow within each group of four, as well as a broad, three-part structure from beginning to end. The entire suite can be performed as a grand, one-hour work, individual books or preludes can be performed on their own, or the performer may arrange their own selections.

I Have Heard the Music There for treble voices, optional descant, with piano is a lyrical work that utilizes a reoccurring motif which grows and varies. The developing variation-like use of this theme speaks to the image or notion of growth; the growth of a tree, of a person, or a choir. We may start out small, then vary, change, develop, transform. The vocal line’s slight variation, use of repetition, imitation, and canonic-like movements weave a thread of familiarity through the piano’s tapestry of subtle shifts in timbre, register, and alternation between chorale-like writing and moments of florid flourishing; the music paints the imagery of the text.The text by Leslie Grant Scott illuminates themes of the humanity, solace, and comfort we find in Nature. The forest’s foliage filters out the harshness of the world, and we are calmed by the forest’s heart.
