After all, I thought..., the text is only about four words and eliminated the need for a lyricist. Most appealing, however, was the fact that it would bring me one step closer to finishing the Mass that I was in the process of writing. If ever there was a case to be made for divine inspiration this appeared to be it. David Wolfson liked the idea and casually mentioned that there was another Kyrie and a religious hymn on the program. He also mentioned that the choir consisted predominantly of actors that sing.Like a bolt of lightning, divine intervention interceded whereupon I instantly realized that he needed a piece to wake up the audience, not another Kyrie. I took a breath and spontaneously began to talk through and improvise the concept of a piece that became the basis for Taxi.At that moment I was clueless as to what kind of piece I would write but it appeared to be a good idea at the time. David's reaction to my presentation was something like Okay,...I have no idea what you are talking about but let's try it. After a very successful public performance, he was delighted that I decided not to write a Kyrie and remarked that writ-ing a piece like Taxi for this group was like feeding raw meat to a pack of hungry lions. At that moment, the idea of doing a trilogy of similar pieces was born. In 1961, a diverse group of student activists organized a movement called Freedom Riders to challenge racial segregation in Southern states. Their strategy was to ride busses into cities with segregation laws and deliberately break them. For instance, white students would use colored only restrooms, while black students would sit at white only food counters. The hope was that, when confronted by police, the federal government would be forced to step in and defend the students' constitutional rights. On many occasions, these demonstrations were met with violent behavior from locals, including beatings and a firebombing. Ultimately, these Freedom Riders helped lead to the abolishment of segregation by bringing national attention to the injustices of segregation. While touring, the Freedom Riders would collectively perform songs with messages about freedom and justice. One participant, African -American preacher Rev. Robert Wesby, reimagined the lyrics of the hymn Woke Up this Mornin' by replacing the name Jesus with freedom in each refrain. This 5-movement, multi-media choral drama honors one of the great heroes of the emancipation era. The journey of those who sacrificed becomes a story we can relive and honor. Dr. Kean's goal was to compose and arrange original music and traditional spirituals in a style that is evocative of the enslaved Africans' frame of mind. The two choruses in Jean Sibelius's Op. 65 are different in both their languages, Swedish and Finnish, as well as their conceptions. Man fran slatten och havet Op. 65a was commissioned by the Music Committee of Svenska Folkskolans Vanner, a Swedish-speaking educational organization which staged a singing festival in Vaasa in June 1912. The first performance took place in the final concert of the festival with about 1300 singers in total, although a string accompaniment had to be used to perform the relatively difficult polyphonic piece.The much simpler Kallion kirkon kellosavel Op. 65b was originally composed by Sibelius as the melody for the carillon of a newly built church in the district Kallio in Helsinki. Reports from the consecration in September 1912, however, named the choir conductor Heikki Klemetti as composer. Sibelius therefore felt forced to write arrangements for piano solo and mixed choir a cappella and publish them. Klemetti eventually wrote a new text for the latter. The current edition includes translations of the texts in German and English as well as an informative preface that is based on the complete edition Jean Sibelius Works, just like the score.
