Bach composed the cantata Jesus schlaft, was soll ich hoffen [Jesus sleeps, what hope have I] BWV 81 for the fourth Epiphany Sunday, 1724. The cantata is structured as a little drama: In the beginning, fear prevails. The seas rage and Jesus is asleep. The threateningly foaming waves are vividly depicted in the soughing string accompaniment of the tenor aria. Jesus's words Ihr Kleinglaubigen, warum seid ihr so furchtsam? [You of little faith, why are you so fearful?] are set as a bass arioso at the center of the cantata; they provide the turning point. In the subsequent bass aria, the towering seas are silenced. A recitative - Wohl mir [Well for me] - leads into the closing chorale with its certainty Unter deinen Schirmen bin ich vor den Sturmen aller Feinde frei [Under Your protection I am spared the tempests of my enemies]. Drei Jahre vor der Komposition und Urauffuhrung des LEHRSTUCKS hatte Charles Lindbergh erstmals den Atlantik in einem Flugzeug nonstop uberquert - eine Leistung, die fur viele Kunstler Anlass war, die immer beherrschender werdende Rolle der Technik in ihren Werken zu behandeln. Brecht widmete sich im Radiohorspiel LINDBERGHFLUG (ebenfalls 1929, in der ersten Fassung von Hindemith und Weill gemeinsam vertont, spater von Weill erweitert als Kantate vollendet) der heroisch-positiven Seite dieses Ereignisses. Im abstrakten LEHRSTUCK thematisierte er die Problematik des Menschen, der sich, die Allmacht der Technik uberschatzend, uber die anderen erhebt und im Absturz erkennt, dass Starke ohne Nutzen fur die Allgemeinheit zum Untergang fuhren muss. Im Zentrum des LEHRSTUCKS stehen die Erkenntnis dieses Sachverhalts und das Akzeptieren des Todes als unausweichliche Konsequenz dieser Uberheblichkeit. Der Skandal der Urauffuhrung verhinderte nicht die schnelle Verbreitung der Komposition Hindemiths. Zu weiterer Zusammenarbeit mit Brecht kam es nicht, zumal Brecht sich im Kommentar zur wenig spater als DAS BADENER LEHRSTUCK VOM EINVERSTANDNIS publizierten, erweiterten und in der Aussage entscheidend veranderten Fassung vehement von der Urauffuhrungsfassung und Hindemiths im Vorwort zur Partitur formulierten musikpadagogischen Intention distanzierte.
