FROM THE RESPONSORY DOMINE AD ADJUVANDUM ME FESTINA. Par VIVALDI ANTONIO / SIEVING ROBERT (Arr.). Robert Sieving\'s arrangement of Allegro for Double String Orchestra by Antonio Vivaldi, RV593, originally a motet featuring the vocal setting of Psalm 69 for soprano, 2 oboes, 2 SATB choirs, and double string orchestra, provides the opportunity for two orchestras to perform in opposition and have a musical conversation through fugal writing. Sieving has maintained Vivaldi\'s writing and sound, as the two orchestras battle it out to be the reigning orchestra. Each orchestra and section have interesting parts, with string crossings, minimal shifting, stylistic Baroque bow use, and call and response sections or echo sections. Invite a neighboring orchestra to perform this wonderful double string piece or divide your orchestra in two groups. Such a wonderful addition to our Vivaldi repertoire by Robert Sieving at Level 3. / Date parution : 2022-07-30/ Répertoire / Orchestre

for Orchestra Full Score. Par PENG-PENG GONG. “In celebration of the 40th anniversary of China-U.S. diplomatic relations and in hope to support the promotion of Chinese culture abroad, Peng-Peng Gong's (b. 1992) Tenth Symphony, subtitled 'Peking Fantasy' (Op. 55) was co-commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra in 2017. The world premiere of the 2018 original version was presented by the SPO in April of the same year in Shanghai, while the world premiere of the 2019 revised version was presented by the Philadelphia Orchestra in January at its home venue with the combined forces of both orchestras side-by-side.
Inspired by the artistic power of Peking Opera ?the crowning heritage of Chinese traditional performing arts, the symphony strives to translate the emotional and philosophical experience of the art form for international audiences and to explore the Western orchestra's expressive abilities in capturing the Eastern spirit. The 2018 original version ran as long as 76 minutes, before the composer extensively revised the score down to 40 and presented it in a single movement without pause. The work is scored for a huge orchestra of over 100 players. Main materials that inspired the music are from the traditional Peking Opera repertory: The Drunken Beauty, Farewell My Concubine, In Pursuit of the General, and The Chancellor and the Advisor (lit. Cao Cao and Yang Xiu).
'Peking Fantasy' is in a sweet, direct musical language ...It's a work of highly original sounds presented in a series of vivid episodes.”

In The Shadow Of The Bat - Concerto for Three Trombones and Orchestra by Niels M...(+)
In The Shadow Of The Bat - Concerto for Three Trombones and Orchestra by Niels Marthinsen (2009). Programme note: In the Shadow of the Bat is a triple concerto for three trombones and orchestra inspired by Batman and his enemies The Joker Two-Face and The Penguin. A central idea of modern versions of the Batman myth is that the batman is created by the fantastic villains that he fights and they are created by him - and that Batman is driven by revenge and hate barely held in check by an intense sense of justice. Batman represents 'the dark side' while the villains are hyper-imaginative colourful creative caracters who happen to be completely insane. The rivalry between soloists and orchestra is anything but friendly: The three soloists represent one villain each the orchestra 'is' the batman - and while the villains take centre stage during most of the concerto they are eventually overwhelmed by the sheer power of the orchestra and sent where they belong: The lunatic's asylum. The concerto begins with the creation of the batman: An eight year old boy persuades his parents to leave an opera performance before it is over; outside in an alley they are shot and killed by a criminal while the boy watches. And he decides that all criminals must be punished! Then follows the Villaineuos Fugue: a multi-part fugue-like exposition of villain motives and stylistic environments. It is the exposition of the joker (alto trombone) two-face (tenor trombone) and the penguin (bass trombone). And after a brief and very slow interlude where the three criminals form an alliance and make their plans the Toccata of Crime begins: Bright fast moving highly energetic expansive and colourful music still dominated by the soloists. But later the orchestra moves to centre stage with slow omnious swooping bat-music that climaxes as the soloists are defeated by the orchestra. In the Shadow of the Bat is commissioned

Everyone Sang was composed by Scottish composer Helen Grime in 2010. It was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 for the 75th anniversary of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. It was first performed at CityHall Candleriggs Glasgow in December 2010 and is arranged for Orchestra. When composing this piece Grime states that she imagined the Orchestra as many individual voices that were capableof producing a unified melody but also breaking off into separate strands of song. Since it was composed as a commemoration for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Grime wished to emphasise the Orchestra as a grand unified whole as well as their individual sections and sounds. The piece unifies the orchestra with a sense of celebration and elation as well as a sense of melancholy making it apt that the pieceis named after a poem by Siegfried Sassoon.

Full Score-The Persian traditional music (called the Dastgah Segah) is based on ...(+)
Full Score-The Persian traditional music (called the Dastgah Segah) is based on intervals made of three quarter-tones and natural whole-tones. Segah has no interval in common with the European/ Western equal-temperament tuning. This lack of common intervalsbetween the Segah mode and the equal-temperament tuning will lead to a cognitive dissonance if this mode is set against the equal-temperament system. My goal has been to elaborate on the innate tensions that exists between the two interval systemsand use it as a symbol for the existing political and cultural tensions between the Persian and the Western cultures. The piece consists of two Persian traditional instruments the Ney (Persian vertical bamboo flute) and the Kamanche (Persian spikefiddle) as the musical representatives of the Persian culture set against the Western orchestra as the musical representative of the Western culture. A small ensemble of Western instruments consisting of a harp and string quintet accompanies thePersian instruments. The harp is tuned to the Segah intervals and the string quintet plays in the Segah mode. The orchestra is performing inthe Western equal- temperament tuning. From the very first bars of the main section of the piece confusionsand misunderstandings arise. The orchestra being unable to play in Segah or understand the mode becomes more and more agitated. Musical tensions between the soloists and the orchestra lead to musical confrontations and finally to musicalviolence. The orchestra becomes extremely violent and militaristic and tries to suppress the soloists efforts to express their musical thoughts. In the midst of all these confusions and cultural misunderstandings musical connections and attractionsstart to take place. The orchestra and the soloists find themselves musically attracted to each other and start imitating each others musical phrases. Cognitive dissonances start to be gradually transformed to musical dialogues symbolizing thegradual replacement of the clash of civilizations with the dialogue of civilizations. Segah was written for Khosrow and Kian Soltani and premiered at the Segah Festival on January 15 2016.

Score and Parts-Charles Ives' Postlude In F for Orchestra. Score and parts. The Postlude in F composed in 1895 is Charles Ives' earliest known work for large Orchestra. It is based on anearlier Organ piece which Ives performed at the Baptist Church in Danbury Conneticut on May 11 1890 (at the age of fifteen; on the cover page of the full score Ives mistakenly gave 1892 for the year of the Organcomposition). The version for Orchestra was probably produced as an orchestration assignment for a class of Horatio Parker Ives' teacher at Yale College. Ives recalled that the 'New Haven Orchestra' - that is the New Haven Symphony Orchestra organised by Parker in 1895- read through the work in 1896. The Postlude in F which was also preperation for work on the First Symphony (its first movement also completed in1895) contains some suprisingly mature and beautiful writing especially in the magical closing pages. - Kenneth D. Four Pieces For Orchestra was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 2000-2003. Programm...(+)
Four Pieces For Orchestra was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 2000-2003. Programme note: In 1983 Hans Abrahamsen wrote the first seven of his Ten Studies for Piano. In the early eighties most composers who wrote for the piano were still making strenuous efforts to distance themselves from the instrument?s romantic past for example treating it as a percussion instrument rather than exploiting its expressive ?singing? potential. The piano?s modern identity as a mechanical rational emotionally cool instrument is reflected in Abrahamsen?s studies 5 7; but in the first four studies Abrahamsen allows the piano to?recollect? its past: especially what the composer calls ?the golden German romantic time full of expression night timelessness dream and the irrational?. Accordingly these first four studies were given German one might specifically say Schumanesque - titles: Traumlied (?Dreamsong?) Sturm (?Storm?) Arabeske (?Arabesque?) and Ende (?End?). While Abrahamsen was in no way dissatisfied with the first four Studies as piano music he soon felt the urge to expand them in both time and space. In their new identity as Four Pieces for Orchestra created between 2000-2003 the original studies nearly doubled in length while the forces required expanded from one soloist to an orchestra of Mahlerian/Straussian dimensions including instruments beloved by the late-romantics: Wagner tubas bass trumpet guitar mandolin and the hammer used so memorably in Mahler?s Sixth Symphony and Alban Berg?s Three Pieces for Orchestra. The results are not so much ?arrangements? of the four piano studies more recompositions. A helpful comparison might be made with certain painters: Cézanne portraying the same mountain from different angles; or Monet obsessively returning to Rouen Cathedral in different lights and weather conditions. Abrahamsen himself remembers an important visit to the Munch Museum in Oslo where he saw how Munch painted the same subject

Symphony No. 6 'At The End Of Day' (1997-99) for Orchestra by Per Nørgård. Programme note: ”… with the Lord a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day” (New Testament 2 Peter 3:8) My SYMPHONY NO. 6 was commissioned by the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra the Göteborg Symphony Orchestra and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra to be premiered at the millenium 2000. The subtitle AT THE END OF THE DAY can be understood literally or it can mean “when all is added up”. However in my opinion nothing ever quite adds up there is always “something” missing any ending will be provisional ... This symphony appears to end only a few minutes into the first movement the first passage as the music fades away to almost-silence after a start of flying colours. But then there is still “something” a small motive (first heard in the initial sound-waves) which reappears hesitant but persistent and this embryo is what leads on the musical progression. An agitated section of many instrumental voices comes next until all the voices become obsessed with the same phrase a see-saw motive based on thirds. This section evolves into almost martial ferocity when broken off by a tutti descent into an extreme bass-world (a bass-world which actually permeates the whole symphony emplyoing instruments that I have never used before: double-bass tuba double-bass trombone double-bass clarinet and bass flute). The second movement the second passage apparently takes off where the first passage ended but now the events are more ambiguous and the same music may be perceived as fast-moving one moment and slow-moving the next. This section is a kind of passacaglia the characteristic baroque bass-variation. Without a break follows the third and last passage in a

This work is scored for a much larger orchestra than the other conertos (including a large percussion section) but the orchestration is relatively transparent. It is only occasionally that everybody is on the pitch at the same time. The concerto is in onemovement but is divided into a succession of different tempi and sections that contrast with each other in character. Fantasia In C Minor Op.80 (Choral Fantasy)-This volume contains two of Beethoven's most unusual highly innovative and original works: the Concerto in C Major Op. 56 for piano violin cello and orchestra; and the Fantasia in C Minor Op. 80 for piano chorus and orchestra. To this day the 'Triple Concerto' remains part of a rare breed in the literature--a fascinating symphonic framework of interaction between the classical orchestra and a trio of intimately interdependent soloists. The work remains a favorite vehicle of the great Beethoven specialists with numerous recordings by legendary performers. The 'Choral Fantasy' is a rarity in the Beethoven canon of ensemble music uniting thevirtuoso display of a semi-improvisational solo piano with the vocal and instrumental richness of chorus and orchestra. Said to have been composed under great time pressure the Fantasy concludes with an extensive choral setting of a text by an unknown poet: 'Schmeichelnd hold und lieblich klingen' ('Flatteringly lovely and fair are the sounds of our life?s harmonies...Accept gladly the gifts of beautiful art...').Reprinted from the authoritative Breitkopf & Härtel editions this volume offers musicians and music lovers an inexpensive high-quality full score of two exceptional works.

Orchestral work commissioned by the BBC and premiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Andrew Davis The Barbican Hall November 1992.Quoting Lindberg: 'After having written a Piano Concerto in 1991preceded by three works for different orchestral effectives (Kinetics Marea and Joy) I felt that I had come to an end with a certain musical expression and also compositional technique. All these works were based upon anextended chaconne principle with chord chains cycling around undergoing constant transformation and being articulated in a very gestural way. The musical paradox and evidently also the challenge was the discrepancy between abrick-like method expressed in a world of gestures (with all difficulties involved in conceiving music out of phrases) aiming at a continuity in terms of progression and development. After the Piano Concerto in the autumn of1991 I strongly felt that I couldn't continue in that direction anymore. I started to work on a project called Corrente for 16 players as a study for the full orchestra version entitled Corrente II.In order to bring theharmonic and rhythmic world closer to each other I abandoned the chaconne principle and based the harmony on different scale aggregates. By combining these scales and by filtering or by enhancing them with additional pitchesbased on more acoustically oriented views of the scales by considering them as partials of virtual fundamentals I was able to work in a rich harmonic world without actually having to do harmonic transformations and progressions. The rhythmic material was based on pattern figures with a rather kaleidoscopic approach of repetition and variation.By combining these pattern figures and scales aggregates I wanted to give the musical expression a 'narrative'sense of streams and directions moving around in different orchestral constellations.Corrente II for symphony orchestra is based on the same material as the piece for chamber orchestra. Clara Wieck’s sincerest wish was that her future husband, Robert Schumann, tur...(+)
Clara Wieck’s sincerest wish was that her future husband, Robert Schumann, turn his extraordinary genius toward the larger and more challenging task of composing orchestral music. Confiding in her diary in 1839, just one year before her marriage, she explained that “it would be best if he composed for Orchestra: his imagination cannot find sufficient scope in the Piano…” In the years that followed their marriage Robert Schumann continued to devote much of his attention to Piano music, but he also found the time to comply with his beloved Clara’s wish by creating a number of musical pieces composed specifically for Piano and Orchestra. Although Schumann’s genius is most in evidence in his masterful solo Piano compositions and superb lieder, his lively and provocative imagination manifests itself with equal aplomb in the works composed for Piano and Orchestra. The same compelling romantic and lyrical qualities that captivate lovers of Schumann’s Piano music are evident in these compositions. Three of his finest are presented here in full score, including the A Minor Piano Concerto, one of the most popular and frequently performed concertos ever written.
