Fred Jewell composed Tent City in 1907. The term tent city is used to describe a variety of temporary housing facilities made using tents, for Jewell, the temporary facilities were that of the circus. Clearly evoking the excitement of the big top, this exciting march works well at a variety of tempos. Of special interest in this march is Jewell’s use of an unexpected key change in the second strain.

Most marches reserve the instrumental fireworks for the trio interlude – also known as the break-up or dog-fight strain. In Battle Royal – composed in 1909 when Jewell’s euphonium playing skill was near its peak – the lower and upper brass begin their melody-countermelody battle at the introduction and never let up. Battle Royal is the obvious work of a circus musician who knew how to generate circus crowd excitement.

Written using just four or five parts (plus percussion), these effective arrangements will work with any combination of brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments as long as you distribute the parts so that each of the five parts is covered. All of the publications in the Build-A-Band Series have been arranged to be playable with any instrumentation as long as each part is used: 1st Part, 2nd Part, 3rd Part, 4th Part, and Bass Part.
