Christmas is full of customs and traditions, both old and new. This is especially evident in Christmas songs, some of which have been part of Christian worship for centuries. A Medieval Christmas combines three ancient melodies that are still popular around the world today. Philip Sparke chose Gaudete, a song of praise from the middle ages, Coventry Carol, an English song from the 14th century, and In dulci jubilo, which can also be traced back to the 14th century, to form this joyous suite.

Kerst is een feest van tradities en gebruiken. Dit komt vooral naar voren uit de kerstliederen die al eeuwenlang een centrale plaats innemen binnen de christelijke cultuur. In A Medieval Christmas staan drie oude melodieën centraaldie wereldwijd nog steeds populair zijn. Het zijn het middeleeuwse loflied Gaudete, het Engelse Coventry Carol en het bekende In dulci jubilo.

Weihnachten ist auch ein Fest des Brauchtums und der Tradition. Dies zeigt sich ganz besonders in den Weihnachtsliedern, die oft schon seit Jahrhunderten einen zentralen Platz in der christlichen Kultur einnehmen. A Medieval Christmas verwendet drei dieser alten Melodien, die sich heute noch weltweit größter Beliebtheit erfreuen: das mittelalterliche Loblied Gaudete, das englische Coventry Carol aus dem 14. Jahrhundert und das bekannte In dulci jubilo, das ebenfalls auf das 14. Jahrhundert zurückgeht.

Dans de nombreux pays, Noël est un moment privilégié, célébré par de nombreux chants et mélodies dont beaucoup constituent un élément central du culte chrétien. Le fait que ces chants anciens subsistent depuis si longtemps témoigne de leur attrait immuable, formant un lien tangible avec les festivités de Noël qui se déroulaient il y a des centaines d’années. A Medieval Christmas emprunte trois de ces ancestrales mélodies, demeurées populaires dans le monde entier : Gaudete, Coventry Carol, et In Dulci Jubilo.

Il Natale è la festa delle tradizioni e ciò si riscontra facilmente nei canti natalizi che da secoli occupano un posto di primo piano nella tradizione cristiana. From Ancient Times is a major work for brass band, inspired largely by the music of the Franco-Flemish School of the Renaissance. Hints of Gregorian chant and middle age dances pay tribute to music from even earlier times. The foundation of this spectacular work rests on truly 'ancient times' while the tonal language is of a much more modern nature!

From Ancient Times is een mijlpaal in het oeuvre van Jan Van der Roost. Doorgaans vinden zijn werken hun oorsprong veelal in de Vlaamse vocaalpolyfonie uit de renaissancetijd. Maar met gregoriaans gezang en middeleeuwse dansen grijpthij nu terug naar nog eerdere tijden. De basis voor dit grootse werk mag dan in 'ancient times' liggen, de toonspraak is dat zeer zeker niet..!

From Ancient Times ist ein Meilenstein in Jan Van der Roosts Oeuvre, das vor allem von der Musik aus der Zeit der flamischen Vokalpolyphonie inspiriert ist. Mit gregorianischen Reminiszenzen und einem mittelalterlichen Tanz wird jedoch auch auf noch altere Musik zuruckgegriffen: Grundlage dieses grossartigen Werkes sind wahrlich alte Zeiten (ancient times), die Tonsprache hingegen ist vorwiegend modern.

From Ancient Times est une oeuvre de grande envergure, qui puise dans la musique franco-flamande de la Renaissance. La trame s'appuie sur quelques principes et techniques d'ecriture caracteristiques de cette ecole qui a profondement transforme la musique occidentale. On y trouve egalement des reminiscences gregoriennes et une danse medievale, mais le langage sonore reste essentiellement moderne. From Ancient Times est un sublime hommage aux maitres des temps anciens.

La trama si appoggia su principi e tecniche di scrittura caratteristici di questa scuola che ha profondamente trasformato la musica occidentale. Avalon–Long Live the King is a medieval fantasy piece depicting the Isle of Avalon where the mystical sword Excalibur of King Arthur was forged. Composer Tyler Arcari unearths a solid piece for young bands that is both bold and dramatic. This piece is sure to spark the imagination of students and give them strong musical content with which they can develop their musicianship.
Program Notes:Avalon–Long live the King began its journey as a commission in honor of a dear friend and mentor. David Riggs is one of those band directors that just seems timeless. He is a powerhouse with such a stacked resume that it is easy to forget that at the end of the day he enjoys taking long bike rides with his lovely wife and whittling a piece of wood just as much as being a band director. He has touched so many lives and inspired so many people in our field and beyond. I was humbled, and honored, when I was contacted for the commission. To David, I hope that you one day know how much you mean to so many people, including myself.About the piece:The piece is written with a little homage to David’s long tenure at Avalon Middle school in Pace, Florida. He was certainly treated like a king as the band director and rightly so. It seemed only fitting to add a little medieval fantasy. Avalon is a mystical island in the world of King Arthur where the great sword Excalibur was forged.The piece begins lyrically with a slow introduction with melodic material. This melodic motive is used throughout with slight variations depending on the instrument voicing etc. Care should be taken at m. 10 that the Timpani roll helps to bridge our transition from an exposed section to full tutti. Care should be taken so that the tempo change at m. 19 is brisk and avoids the low brass turning into stomping. Accessories like the China cymbal and tambourine can become overpowering. I recommend having students think of these effects as background in order to make sure they don’t POP out. The dynamic changes at mm. 27-35 should be subito similar to orchestral dynamic changes. Avoid unwritten crescendos in this section. Measures 60–64 are a great opportunity to teach those unwritten dynamics that make music so enjoyable as we lead up to the finale. It was originally left blank for some theatrics in the premiere at David’s retirement concert so I know he would enjoy adding some Cholesterol as David would say.Long Live the King!
