An ancient world calls… Spirit of the Warrior explores both the beauty and the power of a forgotten civilization; man’s mighty force amidst nature’s gentle majesty. It is dedicated to all soldiers and warriors, past and present, who give their all to protect home and nation. The warrior shows courage in the face of danger, and loyalty to a cause beyond self-interest. The warrior sees life’s fragile beauty with eyes few others can understand. Long after warriors fall in battle, their spirit lives on in the people and lands they have protected.  Using only the first six notes of the concert Bb scale, Spirit of the Warrior begins boldly. Separated notes in the low brass and winds represent the warrior’s power. Nature’s inspiring beauty is represented by the high woodwinds and bells, which play in counterpoint to the lower instruments.  Fully separate the staccatos, and shape the accents throughout to help the music feel powerful without being overly heavy or loud. At m. 29, be sure that the countermelody played by the clarinets and alto saxophone can be clearly heard.If you have additional percussionists, consider doubling the snare drum part on a low tom-tom. Experiment with the gong to find the sound you prefer: strike closer to the edge for a brash “crash” sound, or closer to the center for a more mysterious tone. The piece ends with the sound of the sustaining gong . Enjoy the drama and let the sound fade without (much) dampening.  .

Don Quichote de la Mancha is a tasteful musical adaptation of the famous novel by Miguel de Cervantes in four lively movements: The first movement presents the wise nobleman Don Quixote, and in the second movement we see Dulcinea, with whom the Don has an imaginary romance. The third movement deals with Don Quixote’s loyal servant, Sancho Panza, and in the fourth movement we meet Rocinante, the Don’s long-suffering horse!

In 2005 it was 400 years ago that the first volume of the world-famous novel ‘El ingenioso hidalgo don Quichote de La Mancha’, written by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616), was published.

Don Quichote, a nobleman who is under the delusion that he must fight against injustice starts out on a journey with his steed Rosinante and his peasant squire Sancho Panza and experiences all kinds of remarkable adventures.
In the course of them his love for the lady Dulcinea of Tobosco plays an important role.
One of the most famous scenes is that of his fight against windmills on the plain of La Mancha, which he takes to be enormous, evil giants.

‘DonQuichote’ consists of four short pieces:
1. Don Quichote: the ingenious Spanish nobleman.
2. Dulcinea: the lady with whom this errant knight has an imaginary courtly love affair.
3. Sancho Panza: Don Quichote’s loyal and sensible servant who, compared to his master, is a simple soul.
4. Rosinante: the steed that has much to put up with considering it has a rider who often spends more time on the ground than in the saddle.

This composition is based on the life of the German cavalry general Hans Michael Elias von Obentraut (1574-1625), who was known for his nerve, loyalty and courage. The figure Van Obentraut is closely connected to the town of Seelze, where he died a heroic death and where a monument was erected in his honor. The work consists of four movements in which various aspects of this historical figure are featured. What is extra special about this work is the fact that its firs movement (Hymn for a Hero) had been made available as an easy version for flexible band. This makes it possible for a youth of beginner band to play along with a band of adults or advanced players. This hymn can also be played as a separate piece.
