The title, Aerius, is a Latin term meaning “soaring” or “rising aloft”.  This piece is signature Carl Strommen at his best. The piece begins with a lush brass chorale that is developed before leading to an energetic presto section.  The composition comes full circle and finishes with a majestic return of the chorale material from the opening.  A welcome addition to the repertoire.

With new events and performances, and a first time commissioning a work, this piece signifies the great strides the band has made in recent years.The opening brass chorale section should be played very connected, observing the two-measure phrasing and breathing as one cohesive unit. The Presto section at m. 25 should be taken between 165-170 bpm. the vibraphone soloist should use medium-hard mallets with the pedal on. The sustained notes at m. 41 should be played way under the upper woodwinds to get the greatest effect as it builds in volume and intensity in m. 49, and again into m. 57.At m. 69, the percussion must sustain the pulse to the conductor’s tempo, careful not to add accents they’re hearing among the other sections. After the ritardando in m. 83, push the tempo at m. 85 slightly to where the woodwinds feel comfortable playing the triplet figure with appropriate breathing and phrasing.- Andrew Monsen, Hauppauge High School Band Director, June 2017.

Rich DeRosa has created a marvelous Latin composition in a baião feel that is recorded by the North Texas Two O'Clock Lab Band. It comes out of the gate roaring. The very hip melody is stated by flute, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, trumpet and piano. There is plenty of room for improvisation with soloists of your choice, including space for your drummer and any other percussion you might choose to add. The ending of the piece is wild and always brings audiences to their feet! 5-4-4-4 (opt. vibes).

Concerto For Aluphone composed by Anders Koppel , for Orchestra and doubling Marimba. Anders Koppel prolific career as a film composer began in the mid-1970s, and in the 1980s he became much sought after as a composer for ballet. Since the premier in 1990 of Toccata for Marimba and Vibraphone, he has worked primarily as a composer in the classical world. Influenced by jazz, rock and Latin American music, Koppel 's music is often highly virtuosic and he has often been drawn towards concertante forms.

I was tempted to call the piece Throw Back because it consciously employs rhythmic and harmonic approaches characteristic of the earlier part of the twentieth century, much of which plays a part in forging my musical personality. Going along with the impetus, I have paid homage by subtly interpolating stylistic or actual references to such unexpected bedfellows as Scriabin, Ravel, Debussy, Piston, Roussel, and Ysaye. I hope I will be musically forgiven. In one continuous movement, there are three definite internal sections: Presto-Largo-Allegro. The first section opens with a very soft percussion cadenza. If the acoustics allow it, the player will use sponge pottery mallets (sponge-headed mallets employed to smooth the interior of a pot as it is being spin-dried). No matter how hard the percussionist strikes the drums, the dynamic cannot go above pp (pianissimo). This cadenza serves as a basis for the first movement. The elements of the cadenza are taken by the orchestra to make the first major statement, similar to the classical concerto; but rather than making a restatement, the soloists, when they come in, begin with variational ideas. The second section is given over to the soloists, and is lyrical. The third section begins with an alternation between strict rhythmic pulsation and free-sounding timbres, as if reluctant to leave the second section behind. The rhythmic aspect takes over more and more as the piece progresses toward its conclusion. Double Play was commissioned by the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra with financial assistance from the Northwest Area Foundation. It received its premiere on January 7, 1983, in St. Paul, with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra; Pinchas Zukerman, violinist; Marc Neikrug, piano; and the composer conducting.
