This work is based on the 13th Century Dies irae (Day of Wrath) attributed to Thomas von Celano. Many famous composers have already employed this originally Gregorian chant in their works, including Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, Mahler and Lizst. In Jan de Haan’s Song of David - the title of which is taken from the third line of the Dies Irae text - the theme is presented in unison initially and then reappears in various guises.

Jubilate’s main theme comes from the Gregorian chant on the Psalm Jubliate Deo omnis terra. The work itself was inspired by the sacredhistory of the Waldkirch (a forest village) community, located on the Swiss/German boarder. It tells a tale of the Irish and Scottish monks who build the first wooden church at the site of what is now Waldkirch, of the dramatic events, good and bad, that have taken place over the centuries and of the flourishing community that has withstood the trials of time.

Jubilate!, dessen Hauptthema aus dem gregorianischen Gesang zum Psalm Jubilate Deo omnis terra stammt, wurde von der Kirchengeschichte der Gemeinde Waldkirch bei Waldshut am Hochrhein inspiriert. Von den irischen und schottischen Mönchen, welche die erste Holzkirche bauten, von dramatischen historischen Ereignissen, aber auch von einer aufblühenden Kirchengemeinde handelt dieses festliche Werk, dem eine CD mit dem Glockenklang der Waldkircher Kirche beiliegt.

Jacob de Haan fa rivivere il passato religioso di Waldkirch, una citt tedesca vicino alla frontiera con la Svizzera. Il titolo del brano deriva dal versetto del Salmo 97 Jubilate Deo omnis terra. La musica rievoca l’arrivo dei monaci scozzesi ed irlandesi che si stabilirono sul suolo dell’attuale Waldkirch dove iniziarono a costruire le prime chiese. La storia prende in seguito una piega più tragica, ma la comunit reagisce positivamente e con orgoglio, ciò che porta alla prosperit e al benessere. Jacob de Haan begins his arrangement of the well-known hymn Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr (All Glory Be to God on High) with a quotation from his own Missa Katharina, a mass for choir, soprano, and band. To this melody he sets the Latin text from the last part of the Gloria. The chorale is then heard after an interlude and can, at the director’s discretion, be accompanied by the choir singing in either German or English. A perfect work for church concerts.

De bewerking van het bekende koraal Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr van Jacob de Haan begint met een citaat uit zijn eigen Missa Katharina, een mis voor koor, sopraan en blaasorkest. Daarin maakte de componist de melodiebij de Latijnse tekst uit het laatste deel van Gloria. Na een tussenspel klinkt er een koraal dat net zoals bij het Latijnse deel door het koor kan worden meegezongen. U ontvangt zowel een Duitse als een Engelse tekst.

Darin setzte der Komponist die Melodie zum lateinischen Text aus dem letzten Teil des Gloria. Nach einem Zwischenspiel erklingt der Choral, der genau wie der lateinische Teil nach Belieben vom Chor mitgesungen werden kann. Winner of the prestigious Monaco Prize, the 25-minute work belongs to a fascinating clutch of works composed around the time of Harvey's final opera, Wagner Dream, which contains musical allusions to Wagner, in this case Parsifal. Unfolding over three continuous movements, the music moves from the babbling of a baby and the frenetic chatter of human life in all its expressions, to music of unity, a hymn that is close to Gregorian chant in which---in Harvey's words---the paradise of the sounding temple is imagined.

Zoltán Kodály s unaccompanied mixed choruses first appeared in print in 1943 as a collected volume published by the association Magyar Kórus. This collection contained twenty-five works. In 1951, the volume was released again in the author s edition, being expanded with eight new compositions, but without Els áldozás (First Communion). Reprint editions of this collection had been distributed by Editio Musica Budapest until 1972, when a commemorative extended edition of the mixed choruses was issued, edited by Lajos Bárdos. Until now, reprints of this collection with forty-five compositions have been circulated. Péter Erdei carefully compared the printed edition with themanuscripts of the works preserved at the Kodály Archives. As a result of his work, in 2011 we emended a number of misprints, including those that had been inherited since the earliest print. Seventy-five years after the first release, the time has come for Kodály s collected choral works for mixed voices to appear in a completely new, expanded edition. Our collection contains six compositions that were not included in earlier editions: Jövel, Szentlélek eristen (Come, Holy Spirit), Miatyánk (The Lord s Prayer), Miserere, Salló Pista, Semmit ne bánkódjál (Do Not Grieve), ejesztend t köszönt (A Christmas Carol). In addition, two versions - both equally authentic - are published of the work known under the title of Naphimnusz (Canticle of the Sun), due to earlier editions the new release comes with lyrics in Hebrew and English (Adoration), as well as Dénes Szed s Hungarian translation (Napének [Hymn of the Sun]). This is the most complete and most authentic edition of Kodály s mixed choruses to date it is printed in a slightly larger format than previous editions, and it contains new easily-legible music scores and an informative epilogue.
