“Having won many prizes at the Paris Conservatoire during the 1920s-1930s, Eugène Bozza went on to conduct the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and to become Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes. As a major figure on the classical music frontline, Bozza's compositions were well-received by audiences, Récit, Sicilienne and Rondo for Bassoon and Piano being no exception. This Bozza piece for Bassoon is expressive and virtuosic, displaying the entire range of the instrument, accompanied by rhythmic quavers and spread chords in the Piano. Impromptu for Bassoon and Piano is an energetic, lyrical solo, written for Smith's daughter, Pam, and easily accessible for a high school or college bassoonist. Based on a lighthearted melody, the solo has some technical passages based on arpeggios, challenging rhythmic passages in Smith's signature 7/8 and 9/8 bars and a complementary piano accompaniment. Bassoonists will enjoy performing this work which explores the entire range of the instrument, challenging the bassoonist to portray both expressive and spirited styles.

Concertino for Bassoon and Wind Ensemble was commissioned by Eastern Michigan University Bands and premiered by the EMU Wind Symphony with Christine Prince as solo bassoonist in April, 2004. The version with piano accompaniment was premiered at the 2006 International Double Reed Society conference. It is a dramatic, one-movement work that showcases the performer's lyricism and technical facility.

Mosaicos was commissioned by the International Double Reed Society as part of their 50 for 50 Commissioning Project, in which they commissioned 50 new works for double reeds to celebrate their 50th anniversary. It was premiered by bassoonist Monica Ellis, founding member of the Grammy-nominated wind quintet Imani Winds, at the 2022 IDRS Conference in Boulder, CO.
