A Selkie Tale is a short music-theatre work (duration about 25 minutes) designed for performance by seven- to eleven-year-olds year olds. Four solo roles and several separate chorus groups give scope for the participation of alarge number of children of all ability levels.The story is a humorous version of the Orkney folk-tale of an islander kidnapping a Selkie wife - a creature who is a seal in the sea and a woman on the land. Daedalus Remembers is the third part in a trilogy called 3 for Icarus. Daedalus was Icarus' father and a famous craftsman. He once forged a magic sword for Peleus which had a property of making its owner victorious inbattle and he also created the labyrinth of King Minos of Crete in which the Minotaur (half bull half man) was imprisoned. The second part of the trilogy is entitled Minotaur Games after Troy games a kind of labyrinthine danceinvolving cords (Ariadne’s thread?).At one point in the myth Daedalus and Icarus are also imprisoned in the labyrinth. They escape by means of wings which Daedalus has made from feathers and wax. Sadly despite his father’swarnings Icarus flies too close to the sun in a fit of hubris and the wings melt causing him to plunge to his death. Daedalus alights safely on a beach in Sardinia and after he has collected his thoughts remembers his son’sfall and scenes from his own past life. Have the gods paid him back for the death of his nephew Talos whom Daedalus killed in a fit of jealousy by pushing him off the top of a temple in the Acropolis? Daedalus rants and sorrows dark memories nag persistently.Daedalus Remembers is scored for solo cello with flugelhorn two horns percussion cimbalom harp three violas four cellos and two double-basses.

The Centaurs with words by James Stephens was composed in February 1942 by William Busch at the beginning of a burst of song composition that lasted two years and produced over 15works. The Centaurs was written for figures such as Peter Pears and Sinclair Logan Busch’s regular recital partners.

The Spiders' Revenge is a short music-theatre work (duration about 25 minutes) designed for performance by primary school children. The work was written for Evie Primary School a small rural school in Orkney of about 60 pupils between the ages of five and eleven and was specially devised to enhance an environmental studies project on 'mini-beasts'. All the pupils in the school took part in the first performance. Two children playing in a garden delight in tormenting ladybirds snails spiders and other living creatures who they claim 'have no right to be'. The spiders teach the children a salutary lesson during the course of which they learn a great deal aboutthe ways of these creatures finally recognizing the wonder of the insect world and acknowledging that all 'have their place on the earth'.The songs include simple recorder and percussion parts and guitar chords. This work was written for the League of Composers in America at the invitation of Varese and Salzedo. It was performed in New York in November 1923.

Handel's dramatic cantata Apollo And Daphne belongs to the composer's early years in Italy. It seems likely to have been written in Rome where Handel lived intermittently between 1707 and 1710. Opera in Rome had beenplaced under a papal ban but musical society in the performance of dramatic cantatas which possessed most of the features of opera without requiring elaborate staging. Handel's plainly dramatic intentions in this cantata arereinforced by the appearance of much of its music in his later operas.
