Eight Pieces by French Composers for Saxophone has been compiled by Nicole Roman, for alto saxophone and piano, or alto saxophone solo. Titles include: Eugène Bozza: Aria, Improvisation and Caprice, Jacques Ibert: Aria, André Jolivet: Fantaisie-Impromptu, Pierre Lantier: Sicilienne, Maurice Ravel: Pièce en forme de Habanera (trans. Viard), Jeanine Rueff: Chanson et Passepied and Henri Tomasi: Introduction et Danse.

Concertino Da Camera written in 1935 by Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) was a small concerto for alto-saxophone and eleven instruments: Flute Bassoon Oboe Horn Trumpet and Strings. This score is for Alto Saxophone and Piano. This Concertino is in two movements Allegro con moto and Larghetto – Animato Molto is dedicated to the saxophonist Sigurd Rascher and is standing out for its large use of the Alto-Saxophone. It can be technically challenging and has a strong lyrical part. Its author Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) is a neoclassical composer who won the Prix de Rome in 1919. He composed manysymphonic suites operas and seven orchestras including Angelique (1926) and Divertissement (1930). He was also in charge of the Accadémie de France in the Villa Médicis (Roma) and was later administrator for the Paris Opera. This concerto has some similarities with his Flute Concerto (1934) also published by Alphonse Leduc.

Composed between 1920 and 1921 Stories is a suite of ten short movements by Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) a neoclassical composer who won the Prix de Rome in 1919. Initially written for Piano only and later arranged for Saxophone and Piano this publication was commissioned by Alphonse Leduc editor and increased Jacques Ibert’s popularity. The ten pieces are as follows: 1. La meneuse de tortures d’or (The golden Turtles leader) 2. Le petit âne blanc (The little white donkey) 3. Le vieux mendicant (The old beggar) 4. “A Giddy girl” 5. Le cortège de Balkis (Balkis’ march) Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) also composed many symphonic suites operas and seven orchestras including 'Angelique' (1926) and 'Divertissement' (1930). Pour Alto Saxophone et Piano-Born to an Italian father and a French mother Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) divided his music studies between the Academia Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Conservatoire de Paris where he was taught by Henri Büsser and Henri Rabaud. His chamber music compositions reveal a marked predilection for wind instruments as reflected in Fantaisie pastorale for oboe and piano (1939) and New-Orléans for bass saxhorn and piano (1944). During his stay a few years earlier at the Villa Medici in Rome (1936) Bozza had written his Aria Pour Saxophone Alto Et Piano – a free adaptation of the third movement of JohannSebastian Bach’s Organ Pastorale in F major BWV 590. This expansive and nostalgic melody which unfolds over a regular meter has become one of the most widely played Saxo­phone pieces in the world. Having enjoyed such success Éditions Leduc has decided to supplement its republication with an audio version that will enable saxo­phonists to carry out “full-scale” practice.

Song Of The Muleteer-French composer Robert Planel (1908-1994) was the son of composer and founder of the Music School of Montelimar Alphonse Planel. Planel junior was an exceptionally accomplished musician which is reflected in his composition Romantic Suite for Alto Saxophone and Piano. The sixth movement of Romantic Suite Song Of The Muleteer is a charming piece for intermediate level saxophonists. With a typical performance lasting about three and a half minutes Planel's Song Of The Muleteer addresses a wide range dotted rhythms articulation dynamics tempo changes key changes and variety in performance directions. French composer Boutry won many prizes during his time at the Paris Conservatoire as well as for his professional work. Divertimento is cast in three movements beginning in a highly rhythmic and syncopated way before moving on to a moody and balladlike second movement that ends with a cadenza. This leads into the third movement a light presto finale.
