French composer Robert Planel (1908-1994) was the son of composer and founder of the Music School of Montelimar Alphonse Planel. Planel junior was an exceptionally accomplished musician reflected in his composition Chanson Romantique for Oboe and Piano. Published in 1954  Chanson Romantique is a sublime legato piece for intermediate level oboists. The piece reflects its title through use of an expressive melody slow tempo variations in rhythm use of the lower register and a contrasting 6/8 section. Planel's Chanson Romantique is an excitingaddition to the repertoire of the Oboe and cannot be missed by aspiring oboists.

French composer Pierre Max Dubois (1930-1995) significantly contributed to the woodwind repertoire. Let's Delve into the Oboe for Oboe and Piano was published in 1970 and remains popular for beginner oboists. Dubois' music is characteristically light-hearted with unusual harmonic and melodic textures. Let's Delve into the Oboe is made up of ten movements composed in various dance styles such as Petit Ballet (Little Ballet) and Petite Valse (Little Waltz). Essential to beginner oboist's repertoire Dubois' Let's Delve into the Oboe is a delightful delicate addition to the Oboe'srepertoire and provides beginners and intermediate players with suitable performance pieces.

Composed for Oboe and Piano accompaniment Piece V by César Franck is a melodious piece for intermediate players. The piece begins with a quiet introduction starting Andantino quasi allegretto. The main theme is then played twice with the Piano introducing each phrases followed by the Oboe repeating them. The piece ends in a really nice harmony between the Oboe and the Piano. There is no major difficulty in this really soft work which would be thoroughly enjoyed by the audience during a recital. César Franck (1822-1890) was a renowned musician (Organ and Piano) composer and professor bornin the United Kingdom of Netherland (Liège) who was based in Paris. Even though he only produced few compositions some of these pieces were very famous such as 'Symphony in D minor' and 'Prelude Chorale and Fugue' among others.

Or Organ-Born in Geneva of a jeweller father (and excellent flautist) and singer mother Marguerite Roesgen-Champion (1894-1976) was one of those rare women who reconciled family life (in 1926 she settled in Paris with her husband a philately merchant) with a professional activity devoted to music. Her abundant output graced all genres with a predilection for sacred pieces the art song the Piano and chamber music. Published respectively in 1950 and 1953 the two Nocturnes for Oboe and Piano (or Organ) have their place in the glorious tradition of French music from the between-the-wars period. The first Nocturne subtitled 'Noël' is dedicated to Pierre Bajeux(1899-1961) who taught the oboe class at the Paris Conservatoire as of 1941. Of classic ABA construction this piece as simple as it is expressive is in the form of a pastorale: here the gentle opening recitative unfolds its dreamy melancholic volutes of which the modal character would have appealed to Charles Koechlin. The second Nocturne presents subtle modulations that give it a refined elegance. In both cases this tastefully polished music invites us to stroll in an Arcadian landscape bathed in azure: 'There all is order and beauty / Luxury calm and voluptuousness'.

G.F. Handel (1685-1759) is considered as one of the greatest composers to have ever lived. His Violin Sonatas remain prominent in the repertoire. French oboist Louis Bleuzet's transcription of two of the composer's Violin Sonatas for the Oboe make Handel's music even more accessible and popular. G.F. Handel was a German-born baroque composer who spent the majority of his life in England. His works remain ever popular to this day and Bleuzet's transcription of two Sonatas for Oboe and Piano ensure that the composer's much loved works are more versatile. Bleuzet's edits include breath marks articulation performance directions dynamics and phrasing. For all oboists this Bleuzet arrangement of two of Handel's Sonatas is essential.

Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before embarking upon a successful composing career. The composer wrote for a variety of instrumentations and his works remain popular to this day  Escales for Oboe and Piano being no exception. Composed in 1922  Escales is suitable for advanced level oboists. Ibert was a unique composer who did not associate himself with any particular style. His music is generally lighthearted often reflecting the composer's wit and humour. Containing a variety of musical aspects and techniques and being significantly very rhythmic Ibert's Escales is an exciting addition to the advanced Oboe repertoire.

Born in Toulouse Marcel Bitsch (1921-2011) went on to study at the Paris Conservatoire before becoming a professor of counterpoint at the institution. As an exceptionally versatile musician Bitsch has composed orchestral works chamber works and numerous popular pieces for wind instruments French Suite On Themes From The 17th Century for Oboe being no exception. suitable for advanced oboists Bitsch's French Suite On Themes From The 17th Centurywas published in 1964. With a typical performance lasting around 7 minutes and 45 seconds the Suite is made up of four movements;Pavane Gaillarde Gigue and Riguadon. Bitsch's French Suite On Themes From The 17th Century addresses many musical aspects from the 17th century and is an outstanding and necessary addition to the Oboe repertoire.

Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) studied under Gabriel Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire. His compositions proved to be extremely versatile from Operas and Ballets to solo works. Grovlez's Sarabande et Allegro is a sublime addition to the Oboe repertoire. Much of the composer's works show neo-classical features which is also the case in Sarabande et Allegro where the texture is predominantly melody-dominated homophony perfect cadences are frequently heard and modulations to related keys occur. Grovlez's D minor Sarabande is in a steady triple metre superblycontrasted by the fast Allegro composed in the relative major. All these features make for an enjoyable and delightful performance.

Elegia is a small piece for Oboe and Piano accompaniment by Nino Rota. Really lyrical its medium difficulty will enable intermediate players to execute it for a recital or for a contest. This lovely work is quite slow nostalgic at some points and ends up on a perfect harmony between the two instruments. Nino Rota (1911-1979) is an Italian composer and conductor particularly known for his works on film music. He also composed 5 ballets 10 orchestras as well as numerous music chamber works including a string concerto.
