Frank Bridge’s Three Songs for Medium Voice Viola and Piano is the second volume in a 30-volume series by The Frank Bridge Trust in association with Thames Publishing celebrating the works of Frank Bridge. This publication features the songs Far far from each other Where is it that our soul doth go? and Music when soft voices die and includes the score for Viola separately making the collaboration of the three musicians easier. The songs can be and often are performed together as a cycle but also work as short individual pieces. The first performance of the three songs in December 1908 marked a rareoccurrence as Frank Bridge played the Piano part himself. Far far from each other is the most ambitious of the three pieces for all three musicians. The words are excerpts from Matthew Arnold’s ‘Empedocles on Etna and Other Poems Parting’.Where is it that our soul doth go? is the shortest of the three songs and the words are a translation of the last stanza of Heinrich Heine’s Clarisse translated by K. Seven Songs For Medium Voice-Madeleine Dring (1923-1977) was an English composer and actress. She studied Violin Voice and Composition at the Royal College of Music where her teachers included Ralph Vaughan Williams Herbert Howells and Gordon Jacob. Her Vocal works were collected and posthumously published by Thames in the 1990s. Seven Songs for Medium Voice was published in 1993 as Dring Volume 4. It is a wonderful collection of songs with various compositional dates all scored for Medium Voice and Piano accompaniment.

Volume 2-The second volume of folksong arrangements by E.J. Moeran part of the Thames Centenary Edition commemorative series. Edited by John Talbot this volume features a selection six Suffolk folksongs and tunes from County Kerry all suitable for the accomplished medium voice with full piano accomapniments.

In 1977 The Association of English Singers and Speakers published a four-volume work A Heritage of Twentieth Century British Song which was a collection of songs published by Boosey & Hawkes and which were in the opinion of the editors worthy of the attention that such a publication would bring. Sixteen years later with the benefit of further perspective the Association has published this supplemental volume differing from its distinguished predecessor in that it includes works both unpublished and published by a variety of companies. The composers range from the very most familiar and celebrated Ralph Vaughan Williams Arnold Bax Elizabeth Poston to thelesser-known like Rebecca Clarke and Alastair MacGeorge. The book includes biographical information on the composers and notes about each song for performance purposes. The technical requirements range from quite straightforward to most demanding.

Many of the occasional pieces Bridge wrote in the early part of his career were published in versions for Violin and Piano and Cello and Piano. Bridge was himself a fine Viola player and it is therefore appropriate that these pieces (in addition to those he wrote specifically for Viola and Piano) should be published in transcription for Viola.This volume contains numbers 6 to 10 of a set of ten pieces which have been skilfully transcribed for Viola with Piano accompaniment by Veronica Leigh Jacobs.

All these pieces are suitable for smaller hands and have uncomplicated arrangements with pretty melodies but little virtuosity so children will enjoy learning listening to and playing these pieces.
